Understanding Islamic Art and its Influence
By Joseph Phelan
Three major exhibits currently on view in North American museums remind us of the greatness of the culture and civilization of the Islamic world and its transformative influence on Western Europe during the 8th to the 15th centuries.
For almost eight hundred years, the Iberian Peninsula in Spain formed part of the Islamic empire. This land, called "al Andalus" in Arabic was the most culturally sophisticated region of the continent, the unequaled artistic and scientific crossroads where Muslims, Jews and Catholics lived and worked and exchanged ideas in a harmony unequaled before or likely since.
Caliphs and Kings: The Art and Influence of Islamic Spain
, at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery in Washington DC through October 17, celebrates the art and legacy of this region and of the Mediterranean offering exquisite luxury objects including examples of ivory boxes, bronze vases, lusterware, silk textiles, sumptuous carpets, and illuminated Qur'ans and Bibles. The exhibit, made up entirely of the collection from the Hispanic Society of American, has an online feature with ten highlights of the exhibit.
Arts of Fire: The Islamic Influence on the Italian Renaissance
, nearing the end of its run at the Getty. Glass and ceramics are called the "arts of fire" because of the heat needed to create them. Getty curator Catherine Hess explains (in a video clip) how the exhibit was born from the realization that Islamic art forms and the technology used for their development were "entirely responsible" for the development of glass and luster painted ceramics in Renaissance Italy. The earliest objects in the show date from 9th century and originated in Syria and Iraq where the technologies of ancient Egypt and Rome were rediscovered. The exhibit follows how these objects were imported into Italy and how Italian craftsman learned to duplicate the technology and create their own unique objects in ceramics and glass.

    Discover Islamic Art
Realisation of a virtual museum on Islamic art in the Mediterranean
Discover Islamic Art further develops the Museum With No Frontiers (MWNF) principle of organising exhibitions without moving the works of art and builds on the results of the project Islamic Art in the Mediterranean realised by the MWNF network within the first phase of the Euromed Heritage programme. Adopting a new exhibition format, whereby works of art remain in situ By extending the exhibition area to include Algeria and Syria, two further sections of this museum will be realised by the project Discover Islamic Art An illustrated book and CD-ROM presenting highlights of the virtual museum will be produced on the occasion of its launch accompanied by PR events in all participating countries. Targeting the visitors of the participating museums as well as students in European and Mediterranean countries, the virtual museum as well as the illustrated book will be published in several languages including a full version in Arabic.
The virtual museum Discover Islamic Art will be accessible from the MWNF homepage: www.museumwnf.org

Such monuments are of considerable interest because, when they can be properly identified and explained, they illustrate those aspects of the new or conquering culture which appeared most significant in its own eyes, thus making it possible to define at least one aspect of that consciousness about one's self which was set forth earlier as a major component in the formation of a new art. It so happens that three monuments exist from early Islamic times which can serve as examples of a visual symbolization of the appearance of Islam in the ancient world of the Near East. In the desert bath of Qusayr Amrah, to which we shall return below, Alois Musil saw in the last decade of the nineteenth century a painting since then covered with smoke but recently nearly restored to its initial state. Positioned on the side wall of the small throne room attached to the bath proper, this painting is surrounded by representations of princely life, mostly the pleasurable pastimes characteristic of Near Eastern aristocratic life, as well as the memories of the life of a specific individual. In the central apse the prince for whom the bath had been built was shown enthroned officially while the other images, to which we will return, are entirely original, according to a Byzantine iconographic formula. Since the incomplete external textual evidence thus cannot provide us with a satisfactory explanation of the purpose for which Abd al Malik built the Dome of the Rock, it is necessary to turn to the internal evidence of the building itself: its location, its architecture and decoration, and the 240-meter-long inscription inside the building, which is the only strictly contemporary piece of written evidence we possess. While none of these can alone explain the Dome of the Rock, an analysis of all three can lead to a much more comprehensive and precise explanation than hitherto offered of the reasons which led to the erection of the first major monument of the new Islamic civilization.

Patterns in Islamic Art
THE BEAUTY OF ORIENTAL CARPETS can be approached not only in terms of art and mathematics, but also within the contexts of Islamic art and spirituality. Historically, throughout the Islamic world from Spain to Indonesia, patterns appear in architecture and interiors to organize space and to beautify the built environment. All patterns reflect the pure beauty of numbers, considered to be of divine origin in Islamic doctrine. And by their very nature, patterns exhibit multiplicity as expressions of unity, which is an attribute of God. Patterns in Oriental carpets may thus be seen as expressive of a world view in which multiplicity exists in relation to the unity of all existence. The shades merge, and in the midst are beautiful letters in Arabic spelling a single word - salam, which means peace. Mohammed Ali is no ordinary artist. For the 26-year-old from Birmingham, United Kingdom , art is a fusion of ancient Islamic script mixed with a modern edge, adding appeal to a younger generation of art lovers. Ali also has a message. " Spreading salam is a powerful, strong message. I choose words that inspire me but keep the art form as graffiti," he told Aljazeera.net. He chooses words such as dhikr (remembrance), sabr (patience) and ilm (knowledge) – words he says have a
