The faith of Islam arose in western Arabia with God's revelation to the Prophet Muhammad (ca. 570-632) by the angel Gabriel. These sacred messages were written down by 651 as the holy book, the Qur'an. In 622 Muhammad left Mecca for Medina in a journey called the hijra which marks the beginning of the Muslim calendar (1 A.H.). In 630 he designated Mecca the spiritual and geographical center of Islam.
Islam demonstrates its faith in the building of religious monuments and the illumination of the Qur'an and celebrates all aspects of daily life by adorning the most humble of objects. Arabic calligraphy was the vehicle that spread the message of Islam and thus became the central, most venerated art form. The arabesque, derived from the classical vine scroll, evolved into Islamic art's most distinctive motif.
Although the Qur'an prohibits the worship of idols, it does not forbid representations of humans, animals, and birds in a secular context. Living beings, however, are not permitted as decoration in religious buildings or in the Qur'an.

Islamic art is perhaps the most accessible manifestation of a complex civilization that often seems enigmatic to outsiders. Through its brilliant use of color and its superb balance between design and form, Islamic art creates an immediate visual impact. Its strong aesthetic appeal transcends distances in time and space, as well as differences in language, culture, and creed. Islamic art not only invites a closer look but also beckons the viewer to learn more. For an American audience a visit to the Islamic galleries of a museum such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art can represent the first step toward penetrating the history of a religion and a culture that are often in the news but are little understood.
Related Links The term Islamic art may be confusing to some. It not only describes the art created specifically in the service of Islam Calligraphy is the most important and pervasive element in Islamic art. It has always been considered the noblest form of art because of its association with the Another characteristic of Islamic art is a preference for covering surfaces with patterns composed of geometric or vegetal elements. Complex geometric designs, as well as intricate patterns of vegetal ornament (such as the arabesque), create the impression of unending repetition, which is believed by some to be an inducement to contemplate the infinite nature of God. This type of nonrepresentational decoration may have been developed to such a high degree in Islamic art because of the absence of figural imagery, at least within a religious context.

I slam and Islamic art - Islam is the religion of Muslims, based upon the submission of the faithful to the will of Allah (the only God) as this was revealed in CE 610 by the angel Gabriel to the Prophet Mohammed (Arabian, 570?-632) in a cave near Mecca, in what is now Saudi Arabia. Mohammed recorded these revelations in the Koran (or Qu'ran ) Islam's holiest book. Muslims believe that Muhammad is the last in a line of prophets that includes Moses, Abraham, and Jesus Christ. Today, one fifth of the world's population believes in Islam. The adjectival form is Islamic. Of all the visual arts, calligraphy has been most highly regarded as a fine art by Muslims. The Arabic alphabet in various scripts, generally in combination with arabesque ornament , became the most prized decoration for architecture and other functional works, such as furniture textiles , and vessels . Indeed, with the exception of poets and calligraphers, Muslims have never looked to artists for special insights or meanings. They have regarded the arts primarily as the decorative arts , based greatly upon the study of mathematics , and involving intricately geometric designs Islamic houses of worship are known in the west as mosques . Some features of a mosque are the dikka mihrab , and minbar , and minaret (a tower The absence of figures is a characteristic feature of Islamic religious art. It is occasionally said that figures were banned in Islam from the start, but this is untrue. The

However, there is a continuous tradition of using figures as part of decorative schemes in non-religious contexts, particularly in the illustration of books. The beauty of Islamic patterns can be approached not only in terms of art and mathematics, but also within the contexts of Islamic art and spirituality. Historically, throughout the Islamic world from Spain to Indonesia, patterns appear in architecture and interiors to organize space and to beautify the built environment. All patterns reflect the pure beauty of numbers, considered to be of divine origin in Islamic doctrine. And by their very nature, patterns exhibit multiplicity as expressions of unity, which is an attribute of God. Patterns in Oriental carpets may thus be seen as expressi ve of a world view in which multiplicity exists in relation to the unity of all existence.

An Introduction to Islamic Art
Art is the mirror of a culture and its world view. There is no case to which this statement more directly applies than to the art of the Islamic world. Not only does its art reflect its cultural values, but even more importantly, the way in which its adherents, the Muslims, view the spiritual realm, the universe, life, and the relationship of the parts to the whole. For the Muslim, reality begins with and centers around God ("Allah" in Arabic), the One, the Unique, the Sovereign, the Holy, the Almighty, the All-Knowing, the Loving, the Most Merciful. All existence is subject to His will and His laws. He is the center of conscious Muslims' worship and aspirations, the focus of their lives. Since the command and authority are one, all things are bound together under God's Lordship as parts of an all-encompassing divine scheme, which includes all aspects of being and life whatever is both inside and outside of time and space, and embracing both the macrocosm in its most awesome manifestations and the microcosm in its most minute forms. God creates and sustains His creation how and as He wills, and all affairs return to Him for ultimate decision and judgment. With such a belief system, the Muslim is convinced of the balance and harmony of all things in existence, even when there appear to be confusing contradictions and imbalances, regarding these as the reflection of man's limited understanding and knowledge. Nothing is looked upon as occurring randomly or by chance, for all is part of the Plan of the All-Wise, Most Merciful Planner. One of the vital beliefs of the Muslim is that the totality of things, all good and evil, proceed from the Lord of all being.

W elcome! This Site s ets out to offer Islamic Art based on past creations and traditions and also new extensions based on advances in geometry, computer graphics and other sciences. The majority of works shown are about the beauty of geometry but you don't need a deep grounding in geometry to find pleasure in what is on offer here. Our reaction to all things beautiful arises through our ability to subconsciously recognize harmonious proportions and geometric order
The art on display has universal appeal and has received messages of appreciation from primary school children as well as from Nobel Laureates. Many accomplished persons from different fields and persuasions have agreed to become patrons of the art gallery. The Site has won three major awards, two from distinguished scientists and one from an antiquarian book company (details given below).
