Islam History Page 1 of 5 Printable version of this page Islamic Spain (711-1492) The court of the Lions, Al Hambra Islamic Spain was a multi-cultural mix of the people of three great monotheistic religions: Muslims, Christians, and Jews. For much of the time, the three groups managed to get along together, and to benefit from the presence of each other. It brought a degree of civilisation to Europe that matched the heights of the Roman Empire and the Italian Renaissance. Outline In 711 Muslim forces invaded and in seven years conquered the Iberian peninsula. It became one of the great Muslim civilisations; reaching its summit with the Umayyad caliphate of Cordovain the tenth century. Muslim rule declined after that and ended in 1492 when Granada was conquered. The heartland of Muslim rule was Southern Spain or Andulusia. Periods Muslim Spain was not a single period, but a succession of different rules.

82. What Is God's Name?
A devout muslim asks God to come and talk to him.
http://www.answering-islam.org/Testimonies/omar.html
What is God's name?
By "Omar" I come from a strong Muslim family. When we were young my father forced us to go to the mosque and obey all the rituals. Yet I wouldn't just pray because I had to; I would cry out with tears, "God, I want to know you. Talk to me." Once I was on a train, and I saw a foreigner sitting quietly. I said, "Hello, my name is Omar." He smiled and said, "Hi, my name is Bill." We talked until we reached his destination. He gave me his address and said, "Come visit and we'll talk more." My heart was restless; I couldn't forget about that man. The following week I visited him, and we soon became good friends. One day I found him sitting in his living room with a dark face instead of his usual smile. He was reading the newspaper and he said, "Omar, I think we can never be friends." He showed me a newspaper article that said Muslims can never have friendships with Christians. I replied, "Bill, you don't understand. We can be friends, but your faith is different." I had been thinking that I should share Islam with him and bring him to the mosque. Now was the moment! So I said, "Bill, what you believe is wrong." He said, "Remember that today you have asked to talk about religion, not me." [Restrictions in Omar's country bar Christians from actively proselytizing.] I agreed. We went to his office and closed the door.

  • ABU ABDULLAH AL-BATANI ( 858 - 929 A.D.) Abu Abdallah Muhammad Ibn Jabir Ibn Sinan al-Battani al-Harrani was born around 858 A.D. in Harran, and according to one account, in Battan, a State of Harran. Battani was first educated by his father Jabir Ibn San'an al-Battani, who was also a well-known scientist. He then moved to Raqqa, situated on the bank of the Euphrates, where he received advanced education and later on flourished as a scholar. At the beginning of the 9th century, he migrated to Samarra, where he worked till the end of his life in 929 A.D. He was of Sabian origin, but was himself a Muslim. Battani was a famous astronomer, mathematician and astrologer. He has been held as one of the greatest astronomists of Islam. He is responsible for a number of important discoveries in astronomy, which was the result of a long career of 42 years of research beginning at Raqqa when he was young. His well-known discovery is the remarkably accurate determination of the solar year as being 365 days, 5 hours, 46 minutes and 24 seconds, which is very close to the latest estimates. He found that the longitude of the sun's apogee had increased by 16 o , 47' since Ptolemy. This implied the important discovery of the motion of the solar apsides and of a slow variation in the equation of time. He did not believe in the trapidation of the equinoxes, although Copernicus held it.

Islam Islam is over 1300 years old and is one of the three largest religions in the world. Muslims believe that Islam is a faith that always existed, but it was only completely revealed entirely to humans when the Prophet Muhammad brought it to light in the seventh century. Muslims believe that only one God exists and this God is called Allah. The word Islam literally means ”surrender to God.” The Prophet Muhammad was born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia and he spent much of his life meditating on Mount Hira. Muslims believe that Muhammad was visited by the angel Jibreel who mentioned the name Allah to him after which Muhammad is said to have begun to recite the words of God. Muhammad remembered these words and wrote them down. These words came to form the Muslim scripture, which is called the Holy Qur’an. Muslims worship in mosques and when they pray they are required to face in the direction of Mecca.

The festival is addressing what it means to be Muslim and British Several thousand British Muslims have gathered to pray in a field in rural Lincolnshire. Over a nearby hedge, children are jumping on a big pink bouncy castle.
Side by side, boys and girls have formed friendly football teams. Stalls are selling everything from Islamic literature to coffee cake. This is Living Islam, a festival which its organisers call Britain's largest Muslim family extravaganza. It is a four day event which has brought Muslims from Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, London and beyond to camp together in the green open space of the Lincolnshire Showgrounds. The Islamic Society of Britain organised this event months before the London bombings. Now the gathering intended to focus on faith and fun has taken on an extra dimension. "This is just what the Muslim community needs right now" says event organiser Jeffrey Beere.

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and blessings and peace upon His servant and Messenger, the Prophet Muhammad ibn 'Abdillah, upon his family, his companions and those who follow his way till the Day of the Resurrection. Allah, the Most High, says in the Holy Qur'an: "Of the people there are some who say: 'We believe in Allah and the Last Day,' notwithstanding their unbelief. Fain would they deceive Allah and the believers, but they only deceive themselves, and realize it not. In their hearts there is a disease, and Allah permitted this decease to increase. Grievous is the penalty they incur, because they are false." (Qur'an 2:8-10) During the past few months a group active in the United States that calls itself the "Nation of Islam" has received world wide press coverage. Its leader, Louis Farrakhan, met Islamic scholars and heads of state, introducing himself as a representative of American Muslims. Some brothers of ours asked this Board: "Can Mr. Farrakhan and his followers be accepted as 'Muslim' in the sense that this word is defined by the Shari'a (Islamic Law)?" With the permission and the help of Allah, after due investigation of the matter, this Board answers as follows:

Islam and Hinduism : Symbiotic Mysticism In Devotional Poems Few have heard of the mystic poems Brahma Prakash or Dasa Avatar by the mediaeval Muslim saint Pir Shams. Both are famous ginans of South Asia's Ismaili community, sometimes also known as Khojas or Aga Khanis in popular parlance. Ginans are hymn-like poems of spiritual import. They are revered by the faithful in deep veneration as repositories of wisdom and spiritual knowledge , and as transmitting the essential teachings of the Holy Qur'an in the vernacular. Composed in Sindhi, Gujarati , Hindustani and Punjabi among other subcontinental languages, the oldest are ascribed to the pirs or saints who first preached Ismaili Islam in India nearly 1, years ago.

What do Muslims believe? Prayer and Meditation Muslim Women E-Mail Mosque in Marrakesh, Morocco What do Muslims believe? Is it a sister faith to Christianity and Judaism? What are their beliefs on Jesus, God, and the Ressurection? These questions will be answered as well as similarities and differences to Christianity on this page.
Muslims differ on their views of Jesus. Muslims do not believe in Jesus' Sonship to the Father. They believe in Jesus, but just believing is not enough. James 2:19 says, Thou believest that there is one God, thou doest well; ; the devils also believe, and tremble." James was also talking about faith and doing good works. This also brings to mind a few other beliefs that Muslims have that are contradictory to the Word of God. They view Jesus as the Son of Mary, but not the Son of God. That is a dangerous belief according to the Book of 1 John .; 1 John 4:15 says, "Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in Him, and He in God." In laymen's terms, anyone who does not confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God does not dwell in Him, neither is He one with God. God is none of his, nor is he or she born of God. (1 John 5:1)
They even deny the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. However, it is surprising that they have verses in Book 4 of the Qu'ran that God raised Jesus up.

“I live in a suburban where there are 3 "Halal" meat stores within a 5 mile area, and another which is about 30 minutes away. I am an "American" Muslimah. In the three stores owned by Pakistani/Indian businessmen, the treatment I receive is terrible. In addition, the stores are filthy and no health code is followed. Blood from the meat is spread from meat counter to checkout counter, hands to money and pens, etc. In the store that is further away, the owner has argued and almost had fist fights with customers, and will not disclose his meat source. I have gone to great lengths to continue to buy Halal meat, but I feel that doing business with these people is not something I can continue to do." (Comment in the Halal and Healthy forum of the Sound Vision website, July 22, 1999)
Muslim consumers are often criticized for not doing enough to support Muslim businesses, whether it's paying the extra dollar (or two or three or four) to buy products, or to drive the extra mile (or two or three or four) to get to the store.

    100. A Testimony From A Saudi Believer
A muslim turns to Christ and suffers persecution.
    http://www.answering-islam.org/Testimonies/saudi.html
A Testimony from a Saudi Believer "Born to a Saudi family, in Saudi Arabia, and living very close to Mecca, I grew up with strict principals and traditions of Islam and the Arab culture. As a teenager I went to the mosque five times a day in obedience to my parents. One night, while I was asleep, I had this horrible dream of me being taken into hell. And what I saw there brought me real fear and these dreams kept coming to me almost every night. At this point I was really wondering as to why I should be seeing hell in this manner. Suddenly one day, Jesus appeared to me and said, "Son, I am the way, the truth and the life. And if you would give your life to Me, and follow Me, I would save you from the hell that you have seen." The appointed day and time came for my execution, and I was waiting with much anticipation, yet very much strong in my faith in Jesus. Generally the executions are carried out on the set time and date. But to my amazement, no one turned up. One hour lapsed, two hours went by, then it became three hours, and then the day passed by. And no one turned up. Then two days later, the authorities turned up and opened the doors and told me, "You demon! Get out from this place!" I also noticed that the main person who was determined to get me beheaded was not present when they came to release me. I asked them where this guy was. And with much hesitation they replied that his son had died on the same day they planned to execute me. Although I continue to go through much persecution, one thing I know is that the Lord’s hand is upon me.
