School of Languages and Literature - Irish
BA Hons Irish Studies (Full-time, Coleraine) The BA Hons Irish Studies allows you to combine the study of Irish language and literature with elements of Irish history and Anglo-Irish literature. This programme will provide you with a broad overview of Irish history, culture and literature, as well as the opportunity to master the Irish language. Each year, you will study two modules in modern Irish language and literature. In the first year, you will also examine aspects of Irish folklore and take a broad overview of developments in Irish language and literature from the earliest times. Finally, you will study twentieth-century Irish history and Anglo-Irish literature and society. In the second year, you will continue the study of modern Irish language and literature and this will be reinforced through an exploration of style in Irish writing. You will also deepen your understanding of earlier periods through modules on 18th and 19th-century language and literature and 19th-century history. The module on Irish heritage will examine other aspects of the Irish tradition such as sport, music and medieval Ireland, and relate them to changes in Irish society in the 19th and 20th centuries. In the final year, you will continue to deepen your knowledge of Irish language and literature and become acquainted with issues relating to the use of Irish language in society. You will also take related modules in the Irish language, literature and history of the Early Modern period (c.1200-c.1650). Finally, you will undertake a dissertation in an area of your own choice.

March 24, 2004 I know I know, you're all on break and happily so, and so, not on the blog. But did you all know that Dan and I share a birthday, the first full day of spring? And are you thinkingno, dreamingof our April get-together? Soon, too, it will be time to think about fall courses, and so, when you're ready, sign up for a conference with yours truly, and we'll talk through requirements, options, dreams, majors, you name it. In case anyone wants to see the other Ganley blogs, venture over to Creative Writing blog for the latest. The Arts writing blog will be back up and running in the fall. Are you blogging in any of your other classes? Barrie and Amanda are making headway with their Hard-Cider Making Communties in Vermont Digital Storytelling Projectthey're thinking about a blog, too. Ask them all about it. I am beginning to plan the Irish course for Alumni College this summer and will certainly use this blog as a central part of the course. Have you all seen Veronica Guerin (Martin Cahill, The General, figures rather largely in her story) I've shown your fabulous digital stories/blogging several times to the outside world this winteryou're making waves out there!
