Let's cut to the heart of the matter. The appointment of a Canadian Governor General to represent the Monarch in Canada is too important to be discussed in terms of black, yellow, white, native-born, immigrant, male, female, nationalist, separatist, or any of a dozen other qualifications and non-qualifications of candidates to hold the position. The simple fact is that there are no candidates. One person, the Prime Minister pro tem, selects another one person to be Governor General, and that's the end of it. The rest of the 30 million people in Canada have no say in the matter. None at all. Is this democracy? Are Canadians content to live forever with a system where one person holds such power? Of course, that one person also has power to appoint who will fill vacancies in the undemocratic, unelected, Canadian Senate. I was the youngest of fourteen children — seven sons and seven daughters — and I was born no less than five years after my next eldest brother, John. Six of my brothers and sisters had died before I ever saw the light. The fact of such an unusual period of time having elapsed between my birth and that of my brother John, gave rise to many odd conjectures. Some said it was a proof that I was destined for something great and extraordinary. Others, on the contrary, shook their heads, and expressed a fear that it might be the other way.
(Carleton: The Autobiography)
Carleton in a sense united his country: the list of eminent persons to petition the Government to grant him a pension in 1847 represents all the different ways of being Irish. Nothing else could have brought together the President of the Catholic College at Maynooth and Colonel Blacker, the Orange leader, in the presence of Maria Edgeworth, Dan O'Connell's son, Oscar Wilde's father and the Rev.Dr. Henry Cooke, from Belfast. The William Carleton Summer School has been held in the Clogher Valley each August since 1992. It aims to further the already awakened interest in the life, times and writings of William Carleton; present Carleton as a writer of international significance; foster critical examination of Carleton's work; and present the best of today's writing by Irish writers. Amongst the School's fringe events each year are drama productions, art and crafts exhibitions, musical events and storytelling. Particularly popular are tours of the Carleton country led by Clogher historian Jack Johnston.

Home Celtic Studies Welcome Faculty of Celtic Studies

General
Galway's location on the edge of one of the largest Irish-speaking districts in the country provides an appropriate setting for the Faculty's work and the city's acclaimed status as a centre of Irish culture makes this University an attractive choice for students interested in Celtic Studies.
The Structure of Courses
The undergraduate programme, B.A. in Celtic Studies, is of three years duration, but the student has an option of doing an additional year's study abroad as part of the programme. Students wishing to pursue this degree are required to take Irish as a subject in First Arts, and while they may choose from the full menu of available subjects, they are encouraged to select those such as Archaeology, History, Latin and Welsh, which are of particular relevance to Celtic Studies. Above average performance in First Arts, especially in Irish, is required of students wishing to pursue the B.A. programme in Celtic Studies. Courses for the degree are chosen in consultation with the Dean of the Faculty. The range of subjects offered by the Faculty includes: Irish language and literature of all periods, Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, Breton, Medieval and Modern Irish History and the Archaeology of Celtic Europe with special reference to Ireland. Students studying for the B.A. degree take a selection of courses in these areas with the requirement that the Irish language and its literature form the core of their study. Courses are offered on all four living Celtic languages and their literatures thus giving the Faculty a unique position among Irish universities. A feature of the teaching of Modern Irish is the emphasis on contemporary literature in that language. Special attention is also given to oral tradition and other aspects of folk culture.
