Irish Literature in Dublin
Disability Does Not Prevent Study Abroad
By Johana Schwartz As a student of the works of James Joyce, I had wanted to visit Ireland for some time. My home university strongly encourages foreign study, so I concluded early in my college career that an academic experience in Ireland was both necessary and possible. Although my university does not sponsor a study abroad program in Ireland, the campus center for international study helpfully referred me to various institutions that do. To satisfy my specific goals, I enrolled in the NYU in Dublin 2001 Summer Study Abroad program, an annual 6-week summer semester at Trinity College in Dublin. ADA Assures Civil Rights As an American program, NYU is subject to the Americans with Disabilities Act, even in another country, and I felt reassured being protected by the same rights as at home. Knowing which civil rights would be guaranteed would free me to focus on my academic commitments. In New York, NYU worked with me to accommodate my disability-related needs.

Early 20th-Century Irish Literature: Rewriting the Colonial Heritage
X140.1 (1 semester unit in English)
The beginnings of the 20th century saw Ireland change from a relatively quiescent colony to a militant, emerging nation engaged in a desperate war for independence from England. This course looks at a wide variety of literary works in relation to history, politics, and popular culture. It emphasizes writing of the first decade, the Irish literary revival, ancient Irish literature in translation, and the sudden growth of an Irish national theater. It includes works by Yeats, Joyce, J. M. Synge, and Lady Gregory.
Note: Before the first class, read Yeats' The Wind Among the Reeds (ISBN: 0684807319); Joyce's "The Sisters," "An Encounter," and "Araby" (ISBN: 0140247742) and Lady Gregory's Spreading the News and John Eglinton's "What should be the subjects of our Irish Drama?" (ISBN: 0393960633)
MICHAEL DITMORE a Ph.D. candidate at UC Berkeley, has been teaching courses on American and English experimental novels, Greek literature, and Irish literature in the Bay Area for more than 10 years. He is founder of the James Joyce Center at DU-MOO, a virtual university on the Internet.
