`Present-day Irish poets are believers - heretical believers, maybe - but they have the spiritual buoynancy of a belief in something. The sort of belief I see in Ireland is a belief emanating from life, from nature, from revealed religion, and from the nation. A sort of dream that produces a sense of magic; indeed there are few signs of the awful sense of respect for words which poetry demands.'
`Irish poetry remains a creation happily, fundamentally rooted in rural civilization, yet aware and in touch with the elementals of the future.'

67. The Norton Anthology Of English Literature: The 20th Century: Topic 4: Overview
There are many texts in the Irish language to bear this thesis out . . . but experience of leaving Ireland pervades twentiethcentury irish literature.
http://www.wwnorton.com/nael/20century/topic_4/welcome.htm
For that matter, what is Ireland? The Irish mainland is a large island in the Atlantic Ocean with some smaller islands and rocks off each coastline. To the east, on the other side of the Channel, are Scotland, Wales, and England. To the west is America. So far, so simple. But Ireland is divided. Eire , the name once given to the country as a whole, has a piece missing: six counties known as Northern Ireland, or Ulster. Northern Ireland is British. To understand this unusual configuration and its meaning for Irish literature, it is necessary to understand something of Irish history If we look at the history of Ireland before its colonizations by Vikings, Normans, and English, we might expect to find a nation: people united by a shared language, nationality, culture, race. Ancient Ireland, however, was far from united in the modern sense of a country ruled by one figure or dynasty or government; and those people whom we do consider Irish are not indigenous. Oscar Wilde said that the truth is rarely pure and never simple, and he could have said the same thing about race. Dominic Kiberd answers the question, "Who invented Ireland?" this way: Inventing Ireland , London: Jonathan Cape, 1995, p. xiii)

For a comparatively small country, Ireland has made a disproportionate contribution to world literature in all its branches. The works that are best known outside the country are in English, but Irish Gaelic also has the most significant body of written literature, both ancient and recent, in any Celtic language, in addition to a strong oral tradition of legends and poetry. The history of Irish poetry is complicated by the fact that since at least the 14th century it has been the history of two poetries, one in Irish language and the other in English language. The complex interplay between these two traditions, and between both of them and other poetries in English, has produced a set of traditions that are both rich and difficult for the outsider to follow. Scottish and Irish Literature
Research and publication on the history, literature and languages of Scotland is a major strength of the School. The strong linguistic and cultural links between Scotland and Ireland are explored in the taught MLitt in Irish and Scottish Studies (see above). Scottish special interests include the Scottish Enlightenment; Scott and the Waverley Novels; Burns; MacDiarmid; Muir and contemporary Scottish writing. Irish research interests include Yeats, Joyce and contemporary Irish and Northern Irish literature. For research topics linked to the Celtic element in Scottish or Irish culture, joint supervision with the Celtic Department can be arranged. Research into Scottish and Irish culture benefits from three major Faculty research initiatives. First, there is the Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies . The Elphinstone Institute is a centre for the study of the history, languages and traditions of the North of Scotland. The Irish-Scottish Academic Initiative, which links Aberdeen with Trinity College, Dublin, Queen's University, Belfast, and the University of Strathclyde, aims to develop collaborative research in these fields.

  • Irish Literature in Ireland Home "From the top of Croagh Patrick to the edge of the Antrim Coast, Ireland was colored with a rugged beauty. It was evident in the landscape and in the Irish themselves. They shared their castles, their pubs, and their stories with us, and through the experiences they gave us, the literature came to life. Everywhere we went ther was a scent of history, both ancient and modern, that the Irish have never forgotten."

Yet, the celebration of Irish literature has not gone without struggle. Irish writers must confront a tradition that wavers between the Gaelic and English languages. "What is Irish literature?" continues to be asked when discussion turns to Northern writers versus those from the Republic. For these reasons and several others, Creighton offers a program in Irish literature.
An Irish Literature Concentration from Creighton's English Department translates into a diversified, dignified portfolio as you prepare for either a career or graduate programs.
In addition to a solid background in English literature, the Irish Literature Concentration is grounded in:
