THE MYTHOLOGICAL CYCLE.
The literature of ancient Ireland has been called "the earliest voice from the dawn of western European civilisation".
In his remarkable and inspirational book The White Goddess (Faber and Faber. London. 1961) Robert Graves said, "English poetic education should, really, begin not with the Canterbury Tales, nor with The Odyssey not even with Genesis, but with The Song of Amergin."
The Song of Amergin, which Graves tentatively but brilliantly restores in the White Goddess, is not the earliest poetic incantation in Irish literature but it is certainly outstanding for its evocative power. It holds, as well, great fascination for the scholar since variants hide the ancient Celtic calendar-alphabet of the learned caste, the Druids.
Unfortunately much of that Early Irish Literature has been lost; what remains is contained in the few priceless manuscripts that have survived centuries of warfare and invasion.

The works that are best known outside the country are in English , but Irish Gaelic also has the most significant body of written literature, both ancient and recent, in any Celtic language, in addition to a strong oral tradition of legends and poetry. See also the main article on modern literature in Irish This Irish language tradition has contributed to making Irish literature in English something quite distinctive from English literature in other countries. From the older tradition, Irish writers in English have inherited a sense of wonder in the face of nature, a narrative style that tends towards the deliberately exaggerated or absurd, a keen sense of the power of satire. In addition, the interplay between the two languages has resulted in an English dialect, Hiberno-English , that lends a distinctive syntax and music to the literature written in it.

Welcome to the Oscar Wilde Centre for Irish Writing, School of English, Trinity College. On this site you will find information about the Centre and about the two Master's degree courses which are housed here. The M.Phil. in Anglo-Irish Literature has been running since 1987, and regularly attracts students from all over the world. Combining survey courses with more specialised options, drawn from the particular research interests of the lecturers who contribute to the course, the programme allows students to gain a thorough understanding of Anglo-Irish literature in its native context. The M.Phil. in Creative Writing is now in its seventh year, and continues to be extremely successful. Focusing on the practical business of writing, rewriting and editing, the programme also includes an introduction to the publishing industry, a series of lectures by established writers in a wide range of genres, and the opportunity to take one of the specialised options offered to students on the M.Phil. in Anglo-Irish Literature.

A unique anthology expressly designed to give interested readers access to the immense variety and richness of literature written in Ireland. Description
In a volume that has become a standard text in Irish studies, editors Maureen O'Rourke Murphy and James MacKillop survey thirteen centuries of Irish literature, including old Irish epic and lyric poetry, Irish folksongs and a selection of nineteenth-century prose and poetry. For each author the editors provide a biographical sketch, a brief discussion of how his or her selections relate to a larger body of work, and a selected bibliography. In addition, this new volume also includes a larger sampling of women writers. Praise for the first edition . . . "A splendid selection of the best of Irish and Anglo-Irish literature from the eighth century to the present."-Mary Helen Thuente, author of The Harp Re-Strung "A beautifully sane balance between the past and present and between translation and original. . . . An outstanding contribution, especially to the pedagogy of the subject"
