Iris inspirations
Lovely perennial enchants artists and gardeners alike with its grace and beauty

By ERIC SHACKLETON, The Canadian Press
BEARDED IRISES are easy to grow in most parts of Canada and are a perennial favourite.
— Courtesy of Maria Rodale’s Organic Gardening
Vincent Van Gogh painted them and D.H. Lawrence wrote a poem about them. And for Christopher Hollinshead, there is nothing more exciting than when his hundreds of irises begin flowering early in the spring. "I've got pretty well a whole rainbow, probably about 400 to 500 different ones. ... I've gotten carried away," chuckles Hollinshead, who grows them all around his home in Mississauga. Lawrence wrote about "a fine proud spike of purple irises." Van Gogh usually focused on blue or purple ones. In one of his paintings of Arles in southern France, there's a ditch filled with irises. In a letter to his brother Theo in 1888, he wrote about "a little town surrounded by fields all covered with yellow and purple flowers ... like a Japanese dream." In Hollinshead's iris garden, there are oranges, bright yellows, blacks, reds, pinks and different shades of blue. For about six weeks, from early May to mid-June, "there's always something new and interesting to look at," he says.

Garden Spot erica's gardening journal Saturday, November 30, 2002 Bulb Growth i don't know whether my fall crocus (crocus sativus) will have time to bloom this year, but the bulbs have sprouted. the species tulips are also sprouting in several spots (including the two planted with the crocus). 3:54 PM LinktoComments('85731929') Comment Peas! the peas are finally producing - two pea pods on the vine, several more flowers blooming. 3:38 PM LinktoComments('85731902') Comment Tuesday, November 26, 2002 Iris Update. all the various and sundry iris (the unidentified , as well as the african iris ) and the unknown bulbs seem to be coping well with being dug, separated and replanted
most of the fans are producing new growth and none seem to have died outright. in fact, several of the fans in the sunroom bed are sending up new leaves much more quickly than i expected. in a couple of cases the new leaves are already twice as tall as the cut off fans (which makes them look a bit odd).
basically, i'm just leaving everything alone and crossing my fingers that i'll see flowers someday. 11:47 AM LinktoComments('85718849') Comment Garden Update.

Neutral flowerfrenzy On May 19, 2005, flowerfrenzy Vancouver, WA wrote: I have had mixed experiences with this company. I first ordered from them in 2003. In all fairness, that year was particuarily bad for them. However, the rhizomes I received were very small and dried up. Most of them have never bloomed in my garden, and it's been 2 years now. Out of the four or five that did bloom, two were not true to name. I decided to give them another try in 2004, and it must have been a better year for them because the rhizomes I received were a lot healthier and fresher. They have bloomed nicely this year, with a lot of increase. I wouldn't discourage someone from giving them a try, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend them either. However, if you're in the market for Space Age Irises, they have the best selection available anywhere.

Reblooming Irises
Reblooming irises are also called remontant. Simply stated, they flower in the regular bloom season and again later. There are four recognized types of reblooming irises: repeat, cycle, everbloom, and sporadic. The repeat bloomer blooms during the regular season and then puts up addition stalks after other irises have quit blooming, sometimes immediately and sometimes a month later.

~ Tall Bearded Irises ~
Growing tall bearded irises in Eastern Canada is a challenge.
Blame the iris borer.
The iris borer dooms any and every iris planted in the East. If you plant an iris, the borer WILL find it, and severely cripple it. You're unlikely to see the insect; but it's there, guaranteed. Don't bother trying to grow irises unless you can commit to a chemical control program that involves systemic insecticides, and keep meticulously clean beds.
Your ability to grow irises almost entirely hinges on your ability control this pest. Read on below for a description of the means available to home gardeners.
As for the rest, their beauty and color variety can speak for themselves. You decide whether they are worth it - below are photographs from my garden, you can guess where I stand on the issue. Alizes Caroline de Monaco Dusky Challenger Elegant Impressions Sea Power Good Vibrations Jennifer Rebecca Jurassic Park Maid of Orange Trumpet Call Poem of Ecstasy Savannah Sunset Everything Plus Nordica Cultivation Rhizomes should be planted flush with the soil surface, with their top face exposed. They like good drainage. If your soil is heavy, work in some peat moss, and grow the irises on a moat.
