Lawrence wrote a poem about them. And for Christopher Hollinshead, there is nothing more exciting than when his hundreds of irises begin flowering early in the spring. "I've got pretty well a whole rainbow, probably about 400 to 500 different ones. ... I've gotten carried away," chuckles Hollinshead, who grows them all around his home in Mississauga. Lawrence wrote about "a fine proud spike of purple irises." Van Gogh usually focused on blue or purple ones. In one of his paintings of Arles in southern France, there's a ditch filled with irises. In a letter to his brother Theo in 1888, he wrote about "a little town surrounded by fields all covered with yellow and purple flowers ... like a Japanese dream." In Hollinshead's iris garden, there are oranges, bright yellows, blacks, reds, pinks and different shades of blue.
