Iris
Neomarica gracilis, (Brazilian Walking Iris)
Neomarica gracilis, (Brazilian Walking Iris). Native of regions from Southern Mexico to Brazil. Also known as the twelve apostles, has intricately designed orchard-like white flowers of white with mottled crimson and a blue-violet banding. Glossy green, arching leaves, like an iris which are sometimes more than 24 inches long. Flowers from spring to late summer, prefers partial to full shade. Flowers last only for one day, but multiple blooms will come from the same stem in rapid succession. Grows in grassy clumps up to 5 feet wide and equally high, does well in pots and particularly suitable to hanging baskets. Flowers appear in one year, two in cooler climates. May survive in the ground in zone 8, best in zone 9 or warmer climates. Require a well drained soil with reasonable moisture. Propagation is very easy. Finished blooms will develop air roots from which a small plant will grow. Plant the youngster in a 4-inch pot of soil still attached to the mother plant, or snip and repot. Keep well watered and repot when potbound. IRIS - WEED CONTROL There are no chemicals currently listed for control of grassy weeds in bearded iris. Chemicals used to control grassy weeds will also damage the iris.

Enjoy a Tradition of Beauty
The history of Swan Lake-Iris Gardens is rooted in a Sumter businessman's love of gardening. Hamilton Carr Bland, an avid gardener, began by simply wanting to landscape his home with exotic Japanese irises. Despite the best advice of experts, in 1927 the flowers failed miserably.
Iris Gardens: Renown for Exotic Floral Beauty

Iris Gardens is renowned for its fantastic array of Japanese Irises or Kaempferi Iris. In the 150 acre expanse of gardens, 25 varieties blossom in an incredible rainbow of color.
As luck would have it, Mr. Bland had recently bought 30 acres of cypress swamp with a lake to develop as a fishing retreat. The businessman ordered his gardener to uproot the irises and to dump them in the low-lying land near the lake.
The next Spring Mr. Bland noticed the discarded irises blooming at the edge of the lake. With that accidental success, Mr. Bland began designing, planting and developing the original Swan Lake - Iris Gardens. Today this smaller section is known as the Bland Garden - located on the north side of Liberty Street.
Most of the approximately 120 acres of gardens south of the street were donated in 1938 by another Sumter businessman, A.T. Heath Sr. Mr. Heath deeded the land to the city of Sumter with the stipulation that it be developed by Mr. Bland as part of the gardens. Naturally, it became known as the Heath Garden.

Iris
Irises are named after the Greek goddess of the rainbow and grow wild throughout the northern hemisphere, from high Himalayan bogs to arid Greek hillsides and the banks of British canals.
In this article
Recommended varieties Growing tips Safety tips Problem solver ... Where to see them
Recommended varieties
Irises are incredibly useful upright perennials that can be grown in many different areas. Chose well and you'll have irises in flower for six months, from November to June. You'll also get a wide colour range from rich blues to flashy yellows and extraordinary combinations such as butterscotch yellow and violet. Many also have beautiful, intricate patterns. Botanists divide irises into two key groups: the rhizomatous, which have rhizomes on or just beneath the soil, and those that grow from bulbs. The first group divides into two further sections, the beardless and bearded (with a distinctive little beard in the flower centre), all of which can get very confusing. The best way to decide which ones you want to grow is to visit specialist nurseries and check their colours and growing conditions.

Bearded Iris
Rebecca's Garden : Episode REB-647

No other perennial group offers such a rainbow of colors, from soft pastel hues to dark dramatic shades.
Bearded irises have been around for a long time, and now they're in vogue again. They typically bloom in late spring with elegant blossoms that last about two weeks. They grow best in Zones 4-8. These showy flowers are always a classic in the garden. Irises are beautiful, three-dimensional flowers. In fact, it's all about threes. Inside, there are three style branches, and outside are three beautiful ruffled leaves that cup over the top, called standards. The three droopy petals are called falls. And what about the beard? That's the hairy filament. It acts as a runway for insects trying to find nectar. Each stem produces several flowers that dance above the sword-like foliage. Once the flowers have faded, the foliage stays nice and grayish green, offering great texture to any garden. There are thousands of bearded iris varieties available today. One of the most sought-after is 'Beverly Sills', which has coral-pink, lacy petals with a light apricot beard. 'Dusky challenger' is also a favorite because of its big, bold, deep-blue-purple bloomdefinitely a showstopper. And if you like multicolored bearded irises, check out 'Sierra Grande' or 'Dazzling Gold'. Check with your local nursery or garden center to find out which iris varieties grow best in your area, and then you're ready to start planting.

Iris spread by thick roots with multiple growth tips that turn this original clump into a large colony with time. (SHNS photo by Maureen Gilmer / DIY Do It Yourself Network)
By Maureen Gilmer
DIYDo It Yourself Network The song of the high water gardener is a dirge of black stinking roots, melted bulbs and disintegrating stems. While a dozen great books present the techniques of dry desert-like gardening, few teach high water survival tactics. Wet ground and saturated soils can be caused by compaction or problematic grading. It may be an unusually high water table that sits just below the surface. Sites with seasonal summer flooding render soils inhospitable to actively growing plants. Plants need air in the root zone. Displace the air with water for more than a few hours and most plants become unhappy campers. After a few days healthy roots melt into a black foul smelling mess like that of an over watered house plant.

Iris was the Greek goddess of the rainbow and her name is therefore an appropriate one for a genus containing more than 300 species of multicoloured flowering plants which have been cherished for their beauty since antiquity. The genus Iris is native to almost every country in the northern hemisphere. Flower structure. . .
Iris flowers vary greatly in colour, shape and size but in general structure all are the same:
  • Each flower has six segments in two sets of three The three upper segments are petals and called standards The three lower segments are called falls Between standards and falls are three flat-coloured bands which arch over the stamens. These are style-arms.

GARDENING: Las Vegas Iris Society sells plants for fundraiser
The Las Vegas Iris Society is having its annual iris rhizome sale fundraiser Saturday and Sunday at Plant World Nursery, 5311 W. Charleston Blvd. The sale will be from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. There are more than 30,000 registered named varieties of bearded iris in the United States and members of the Las Vegas Iris Society grow between 600 and 800 of them, with many on sale. Many have only been introduced to the retail market within the past 10 years. All those on sale have been grown in Las Vegas by club members and have proven to be good growers. Irises come in all colors, and combinations of colors, except true red. There are varieties that will rebloom at various times of the year and varieties called fancys. Different heights and bloom sizes of bearded iris will be available. Special at the Gardens: Join the Nevada Youth Ensemble from 6 to 8 p.m. today in a free musical celebration in honor of the Las Vegas centennial at the Gardens at the Springs Preserve, 3701 W Alta Drive. The group's performance of "Tapestry" weaves the colorful story of Las Vegas with the music that spans a 100 years in styles and delivery.
