N. Ireland bomb defused ahead of crucial talks
January 7, 1998 Web posted at: 11:45 a.m. EST (1645 GMT) BELFAST, Northern Ireland (CNN) Security forces in the British province of Northern Ireland on Wednesday defused a car bomb in a town near Belfast, only hours before crucial talks were to resume on the political future of the province. The 136-kg (300 pound) bomb was found in the mostly Protestant town of Banbridge, southwest of Belfast, following a warning call. No group has claimed responsibility, but politicians immediately pointed their fingers at dissidents of the outlawed Irish Republican Army, which has re-implemented a unilateral cease-fire. "It is perfectly obvious that this bomb is from a republican source," said Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) leader David Trimble , whose parliamentary constituency includes Banbridge. Trimble said the failed attack was an attempt to increase instability after a surge in violence by pro-British and pro-Irish factions opposed to current peace moves. "I'm relieved that the bomb was disposed of and no one was killed but angry, too," said Eddie McGrady, a moderate Catholic member of British Parliament. "Presumably one of the fringe extreme groups was behind this. They're holding the community at ransom."

Northern Ireland mediator: No imminent breakthrough
November 3, 1999 Web posted at: 1:41 p.m. EST (1841 GMT) LONDON Mediator George Mitchell said Wednesday he does not see an imminent end to 30 years of sectarian strife in Northern Ireland , but plans to push ahead with the troubled peace process. The former U.S. senator said he hopes to finish his review of the peace drive by next week, but did not impose a specific deadline while speaking to reporters after meeting British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Mitchell, scheduled to brief President Clinton in Washington this week, plans to return to Belfast on the weekend. He is to meet with the parties the Ulster Unionists and Sinn Fein, the political wing of the Irish Republican Army on Monday and Tuesday.

Britain, Ireland scramble to save Northern Irish Assembly
February 2, 2000
Web posted at: 6:00 a.m. EST (1100 GMT) In this story: Failure would be 'disaster' Mitchell could return to talks RELATED STORIES, SITES BELFAST, Northern Ireland (CNN) British, Irish and American negotiators worked Wednesday to keep Northern Ireland's joint Protestant-Catholic administration from unraveling after monitors ruled the Irish Republican Army has not begun to disarm. The latest crisis comes after a key disarmament commission report found the IRA had taken no steps to surrender its weapons after two months of talks. The disarming of paramilitary groups is a key provision of the U.S.-brokered peace agreement that led to the creation of the self-rule government that has run Northern Ireland for eight weeks. 148. Prose And Pictures From Ireland
A ride around the Dingle Penninsula in July 1997.
http://www.cycletourist.com/Ireland1.html
Dingle Penninsula, Ireland - July 1997
After bicycling through four countries, alone on the road for over three months I arrived in Ireland for some "real" vacation before heading home. From London (Euston Station), I took a train to Holyhead, the port in Wales, and at 3:45AM sailed on Irish Ferries across the cold, dark sea of Ireland towards the dawn and Dublin. After a confusing ride through the empty streets I found the train station and hopped immediately onto a train bound for Cork, where I spent two days in empty college housing near the Beamish brewery.
This is a small road near Ballydavid on the northeast tip of Dingle Penninsula in Smerwick Harbor. I was bicycling to a pub there because I'd heard there'd be a session with good craic and without the ever present, suffocating crowds that fill the pubs of Dingle town. In Ballydavid I got to experience a real Irish pub without the usual mob of tourists. When I got there the place was near empty, but slowly the Ballydavid locals trickled in for some dinner and pints. The four musicians I'd met at O'Flaherty's Pub the night before were jamming away on pipe, whistle, guitar, bodhrain, and mandolin. The evening sun was making framed boxes of light on the floor. Little kids chased a puppy under the tables, around the bar and out the door. A toddler swayed around the floor like a drunken fisherman. Glasses were being lifted and clinked together. You could hear the tap breathing nitrogen and Guinness into pint glasses. The aroma of home cooking swirled about the room. I had brown bread with some lamb stew, with my Guinness, of course.

TTIreland has heard that players from Connacht will not be travelling to Blackpool or the British League. This weekend's Irish Junior Ranking will also miss out some of the most talented girls in the country with at least 4 top Irish Juniors all declining the opportunity to play. We believe there are number of gender equity issues at the centre of this latest controversy to hit Irish table tennis and we will await further comment. A Wee Bit O Ireland
St. Patrick's Day
Please Take a Moment to Rank My Site :-) Although St. Patrick's Day is a holiday associated with the country of Ireland , St. Patrick's Day is welcomed by people from every background, not just the Irish. St. Patrick , the patron saint of Ireland, was not Irish, but thought to have been born in Britain. No one knows for sure, but it is believed that March 17 was the date of St. Patrick's death rather than his birth. There are many legends about Saint Patrick. The most popular one is that he drove all the snakes out of Ireland and into the sea. How did Saint Patrick come to be associated with Ireland? Legend has it that, as a young man of 16, St. Patrick was captured by pirates from his father's farm in Britain and kept as a slave for six years, working as a shepherd in Ulster, Ireland. After escaping back to Britain, St. Patrick devoted his life to God. He was a deeply religious man and dreamed of returning to Ireland to bring Christianity to the Irish. He did-as a monk-and is said to have established over 300 churches and baptized over 120,000 people. The historical records from that era are incomplete, but the surviving writings of St. Patrick show that he was a devout man and tireless missionary.

Bomb explodes in Northern Ireland town
August 1, 1998
Web posted at: 1:18 p.m. EDT (1318 GMT) BELFAST, Northern Ireland (CNN) A car bomb exploded Saturday in the mostly Protestant town of Banbridge, located 20 miles (35 kms) southwest of Belfast. No serious injuries were reported. Police said the explosion damaged several buildings and a number of people were treated for shock. Six persons were taken to the hospital, Kenny McMahon of the Northern Ireland ambulance service said. No one immediately claimed responsibility, but police said there had been a warning and the area was being cleared when the explosion occurred. Buildings in Banbridge suffered blast damage in April 1994 from a bomb hidden inside a van. A police officer was hospitalized with leg injuries and several elderly residents were treated for shock in that attack. No one claimed responsibility. Despite the historic peace deal signed this April in a bid to end three decades of sectarian violence, peace eludes this long-troubled British province. While the main guerrilla groups have declared a cease-fire under the accord, three republican splinter groups have not.
