British, Irish premiers make progress in N. Ireland talks
Blair, Ahern meet again Friday
In this story: April 2, 1998 Web posted at: 10:02 p.m. EST (0302 GMT) LONDON (CNN) The British and Irish prime ministers plan to meet again Friday after making "some progress" in talks Thursday night. The progress came amid deepening differences between Protestant leaders from Northern Ireland and the Irish government to the south. Adding further concern was the interception Thursday of a huge car bomb that was on its way to Britain. A British government spokeswoman said the 40 minutes of after-dinner talk between British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his Irish counterpart, Bertie Ahern, touched on a number of areas of disagreement between the two governments, including policing and the powers of new cross-border institutions. "The talks were useful and some progress was made," the spokeswoman said. "The government is looking forward to further talks over the next day and a half." She said the two would meet again Friday.

Tensions mount in N. Ireland as Protestant parade looms
July 3, 1998
Web posted at: 9:16 p.m. EDT (0116 GMT) PORTADOWN, Northern Ireland (CNN) Catholics who want to block a Protestant march through their neighborhood began setting up a human blockade on Friday, while the intended marchers vowed to wait as long as necessary to wear down resistance along their desired route. The annual parade of Orangemen is scheduled for Sunday. The group wants to march along the route it's used since 1807: from the rural Drumcree Anglican church, down Garvaghy Road, which runs through a staunchly Catholic nationalist neighborhood, and back into the center of the otherwise Protestant town. The government has banned the marchers from going down Garvaghy Road, but the Orangemen vow to disobey. They've triumphed over the protesters in each of the past three years.

Tyrone has a fine variety of scenery, mountains and gentle hills, glens and river valleys, moorland and little plains. This is a wild yet welcoming land of forests, mountains and a rich historic heritage. The Archaeology of Ancient Ireland
Prehistoric Ireland. Little remains of Irish dwellings that predates the sixth century a.d. The abundance of wood and the difficulty of working stone with primitive tools undoubtedly accounts in part for this. In addition, the primitive farming practice of depleting the fields and then moving on to new ones made the laborious erection of a permanent stone dwelling unfeasible. Moreover, livestock constituted a major part of the wealth of the time, and the pasturing of flocks required considerable mobility, since the animals lived as foragers and were not, for the most part, fed grain from the laboriously worked fields. Furthermore, there were at that time no towns or even villages where artifacts might accumulate over a considerable period of time. At the most there were quasi-permanent encampments such as the royal sites of Cruachan and Emain Macha. Burial sites, however, are another matter. Court graves and passage graves can be found dating from as early 3,500 years b.c. ( Harbison 5-ff). A

    Christian Brothers of Ireland
An institute founded at Waterford, Ireland, in 1802, by Edmund Ignatius Rice , a merchant of that city. At the close of the eighteenth century a cloud of ignorance and misery hung over the Catholics of Ireland, the inevitable result of two centuries of dreadful penal enactments. During those unhappy years it was illegal either for a Catholic to educate his children as Catholics or for a teacher to undertake the work. The wretched state of the Catholic boys of Waterford excited the pity of Mr. Rice. He had some idea of joining a religious order on the Continent, but the miserable state of his surroundings decided his future course. The bishop of the diocese, the Most Reverend Dr. Hussey warmly approved of his intention and promised him every support. Archbishop of Dublin, in 1812, established a community in Dublin. A second community was founded in 1818 and in 1907 there were ten communities in Dublin, educating more than 6000 Pupils. These establishments comprise not only extensive primary and secondary schools but orphanages, industrial schools, and a large deaf and dumb institution, The Limerick community was founded in 1816 and enlargements were made in 1825 and 1828, while many houses were opened later on in the principal towns of the country. In 1820 came the crowning of Mr. Rice's work in the Apostolic Brief by which the

    Trimble quits N.Ireland post
Trimble quit as first minister at midnight on Saturday BELFAST, Northern Ireland The troubled peace process in Northern Ireland is entering a new period of uncertainty following the resignation of first minister David Trimble. Trimble quit the post as expected at midnight on Saturday, carrying out a threat made weeks ago when he said he would step down unless the Irish Republican Army began handing over arms. The move came following minor clashes between Protestants and Catholics during a contentious loyalist parade in Belfast. The Protestant "marching season," during which historic victories over Catholics are celebrated, is an annual flashpoint for potential trouble. Trimble, leader of the Protestant Ulster Unionists, had submitted a post-dated resignation letter several weeks ago, and a Northern Ireland Office spokesman told Reuters early on Sunday: "As of midnight, David Trimble ceased to be First Minister of Northern Ireland's power-sharing government." IN-DEPTH Conflict and Hope in Northern Ireland Overview Decommissioning Marching season ... Quiz ANALYSIS Trimble, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize winner with Catholic leader John Hume for their part in the 1998 Good Friday peace accord, has asked Trade Minister Reg Empey, another Ulster Unionist, to take over his duties.
