HISTORY OF CLONAKILTY
HISTORY OF CLONAKILTY AND SURROUNDING DISTRICTS
Clonakilty is situated in one of the tuatha or tribe lands of the Corca Luighe. This was a pre-Milesian race and the name Luighe was common among their early chiefs. One of those, Lughaidh Mac Con was Monarch of Ireland. He is supposed to have been interred in Corran-hill in the parish of Desertserges from which a magnificent view embraces the southern coast from the Old Head of Kinsale westward. A cairn which marked the spot was opened in the early part of the last century and the urn contained in it is now in a Belfast museum. According to the Book of Ballymote, Corca Luighe extended from Beann Finn westward to Tragumina and Lough Ine and from Beal Atha Buidhe to Tragh Claen at the rock. It is very unsafe to dogmatise on Irish place-names but it is likely that Beann Finn stands for Mounteen Hill near Ballinascarthy on the summit of which there is a tumulus called Suidhe Finn. Another name may represent the fort of Ballyboy on the Bandon river and Tragh Claen may be where Cleena's rock is situated near the Galley Head. Each tuath of Corca Luighe was governed by a taoiseach and beneath him were the hereditary leaders. Tuatha O Fitcheallaigh and O Dunghalaigh merged in Clonakilty.

Site Map Years When a family history group was formed in Bangor in 1979, it was not envisaged then that 25 years later this group would be part of the North of Ireland Family History Society with 10 other Branches and hundreds of members worldwide. To celebrate our 25th anniversary, a number of events have now taken place. The main ones being our "Anniversary Day" at the Fitzwilliam International Hotel in October and our two successful evenings of talks on the subject of "Migration - North Irish Roots" as part of the Belfast Festival at Queen's. About the Society Our objective is to foster interest in family history with special reference to families who have roots in the North of Ireland and their descendants, wherever they may be. The NIFHS is a voluntary, non profitmaking organisation, depending on the financial support of amateurs doing Family History and volunteer effort in running the society. The society is not a Research Agency, although we do like to put people in contact with one another. We have two types of Membership:
BRANCH MEMBERSHIP - Local members usually join and attend meetings at their nearest Branch by paying the annual fee set by each Branch - but this also allows them to attend meetings held by any of the Branches. Annual Membership includes two issues of the Journal

    Ireland's History in a Nutshell
By Rick Steves One surprising aspect of Ireland is the richness of its history. While the island is not particularly well-endowed with historic monuments, it is soaked in history. I've woven more in-depth accounts of its past into the sightseeing descriptions in my Ireland guidebook . But here's a thumbnail overview: The story of Ireland can be broken into four sections: 500 BC-500 AD (Iron Age), 500-900 (age of "Saints and Scholars"), 900-1900 (age of invasions and colonization), and the 20th century (independence and the question of one Ireland). Through the Iron Age, the Celtic people left the countryside peppered with thousands of ancient sights . While most of what you'll see are little more than rockpiles and take a vigorous imagination to reconstruct (ring forts, wedge tombs, monumental stones, and so on), just standing next to a megalith that pre-dates the pharoahs while surrounded by lush Ireland is evocative. The finest gold, bronze, and iron work of this period is in the National Museum in Dublin. Celts worshipped the sun. Perhaps St. Patrick had an easy time converting the locals because they had so little sun to worship. Whatever the case, a Roman boy enslaved by the Irish, Patrick, helped Christianize Ireland in the 5th century. From this period on, monks established monastic centers of learning which produced great Christian teachers and community-builders. They traveled, establishing monastic communities all over Ireland, Britain and Europe. One of them, St. Brendan, may have even sailed to America.

Early Ireland History: By the start of the Christian Era the various Celtic tribes inhabiting Ireland were apparently divided into the five kingdoms of Ulster; Meath, Leinster, Munster, and Connaught, whose rulers were subject to a high king dwelling at Tara. The Druids, or priests, and the bards, who sang heroic tales, were figures of special power and prominence in those early days. In the fifth century, when St. Patrick carried on his famous missionary work, Christianity became the religion of the island. Learning, music, and poetry flourished; foreign students visited Ireland, and Irish missionaries carried religion and scholarship to England and the Continent. This, Ireland's most glorious era, is the period of which its people are most proud of their Irish heritage.
