It was a war between the Irish chieftains and the Vikings which first led to the involvement of the English. Richard of Clare, Earl of Pembroke (nicknamed Strongbow), was invited by one the chieftains to support his claims, but instead Strongbow conquered almost the entire country with only a tiny force of archers and mounted knights in 1169-70. A stream of Norman families moved across the Irish Sea, effectively colonizing the country and coming into conflict with the Irish tribal system. Repeated and largely unsuccessful efforts from the 14th century onwards were made to bring the island under control. The turbulent and increasingly polarized political life of Ireland took a new and bitter twist after the English Civil War, when the Irish rose in favor of the deposed monarchy in 1649.
The victorious Oliver Cromwell led an army across the Irish Sea and the rebellion was ruthlessly put down. Over the next few years, all Catholic land was expropriated and given to a new wave of Protestant immigrants. The subsequent Act of Union, passed in 1801, incorporated the whole of Ireland, along with England, Scotland and Wales, into the United Kingdom. However, the grossly inadequate response of the Government to the potato famine of 1845/6, which decimated the Irish population through death and emigration, highlighted its lack of interest in the welfare of the Irish people. Various independence movements pursued an almost continuous struggle against the Government until Home Rule was granted in 1920 (the Easter Rising of 1916, centered on the Main Post Office in Dublin, was a particular landmark).

These local taxes, called the County Cess, were based on townland units. Successive committees of the House of Commons debated this problem and found that, although the names and outlines of these divisions were assumed to be well known, the acreages and rateable valuations were doubtful. Finally, on the recommendations of the Spring Rice Committee, a survey of all Ireland at a scale of 6 inches to one mile was authorized by the British Parliament in 1824. On the 22 June 1824, the day after the report was signed, Lt Col Thomas Colby was chosen to undertake this task. Prior to this the Ordnance Survey's brief had been topographic mapping at smaller scales and this departure marked the introduction of the large scale mapping that was to become a major task. Colby immediately began the trigonometrical survey of Ireland.

What makes the strife in Northern Ireland so comparatively intractable is a history that is longer and more complex than even the oldest and most tangled confrontations between nationalists and colonialists. In fact, today's Irish Republican Army (IRA) sees itself as the direct de-scendant of resistance fighters who be-gan challenging imperial rule centuries before the advent of the colonial system. To Irish republicans, the current struggle in the area commonly referred to as Ulster is but the latest phase of a war for self-determination that got underway 800 years ago.
Beginning with the invasion of Ire-land in 1170 by a Norman nobleman known as Strongbow, certain patterns have regularly recurred throughout the bloody past and right up to the latest atrocity. At no time have Irish national-ists completely acquiesced to English control over even a portion of the island. Repeatedly, they have risen in arms and protested in parliamentary forums, often to no avail. The protracted conflict has also been marked by vicious sectarian-ism, violence on all sides, adamant re-fusals to compromise, and eventual con-cessions that usually fail to satisfy one or another aggrieved party.
Most Irish people, including the Prot-estants of Ulster, regard themselves as culturally distinct from the British. For Catholics, who now comprise a large ma-jority of the entire island's inhabitants, the differences are generally deep-rooted, the product of a legacy that ex-tends to the Gaelic settlement of Ireland more than two millennia ago. It was the Gaels, a branch of the Celtic people, who were subjugated by Strongbow in the 12th century in the name of the AngloNorman monarch Henry II.

By properly playing their civilising leadership role, the [Protestant] Irish gentry could also wean the native Hibernians from clan to state loyalties; their assent thus ensuring the hegemony of that landed class. The proposition I shall put in my reexamination of Edgeworth's Irish writing is that when read closely all five of the works concerned indeed exhibit political objectives, but they are not these. Edgeworth has other objectives, including but not limited to nationalism, that prove her much more expressively committed than has hitherto appeared to the history, language, culture, and future of Irish people.
