Sinn Fein endorses N. Ireland peace accord
May 10, 1998 Web posted at: 1:28 p.m. EDT (1728 GMT) DUBLIN, Ireland (CNN) The Northern Ireland peace process got a crucial boost Sunday when the nationalist Sinn Fein party, the political wing of the Irish Republican Army, endorsed the new peace accord for the troubled province. The peace deal will be put to a vote both north and south of the Irish border on May 22. Sinn Fein's party conference also voted in favor of amending its constitution so that Sinn Fein representatives will be able to take their seats in new Northern Ireland institution to be created under the peace accord, which was agreed upon during multi-party peace talks in April. In a fundamental reversal of decades-old policy, 331 out of 350 party delegates voted in support of Party President Gerry Adams' recommendation that they accept their place in a new Belfast administration. Other party leaders also argued that Sinn Fein had to sit in the proposed 108-seat Assembly in Belfast, which would be overseen by a 12-strong executive body composed of representatives from several parties, including Sinn Fein.

More violence in N. Ireland
BELFAST, Northern Ireland Sectarian tensions are simmering on the streets of north Belfast after a dispute over a Catholic school again become the focus of clashes between Catholics and Protestants. Forty-eight policemen and four others were injured in a night of rioting which saw petrol bombs thrown at police and several vehicles set alight in the worst street violence the Northern Irish capital has seen in months. Politicians and community leaders did what they could to calm passions after the rioting which began on Wednesday near the flashpoint Holy Cross Primary School the Catholic school in a Protestant area where school-run demonstrations have shocked the world. But with the school due to reopen on Friday unless police deem the situation too dangerous, more violence was feared. "There's huge anger, huge fear, people are saying where do we go from here?" said Father Aidan Troy, chairman of governors at the Catholic girls' school.

He was educated at the English College, St. Omer; admitted to the Society of Jesus at Watten, 1655; professed, 1673; and was for several years confessor to the Poor Clares at Gravelines. In 1677 he was sent on the English Mission and appointed procurator of the province. On the night of 28 September, 1678, he was arrested by Titus Oates in person, and amongst others who shared his fate was John Grove, a layman, the nominal occupier of that part of Wild House, London, occupied by the Jesuits , the Spanish ambassador living under the same roof. Nic Robertson Story Tools
LONDON, England The future of the Northern Ireland Assembly is in doubt after a raid on offices of the republican Sinn Fein party and a call by the pro-British Democratic Unionist Party for other unionists to withdraw from the power-sharing body. Senior CNN correspondent Nic Robertson examines the delicate political situation. Q. What developments are likely this week? A. There are due to be a series of meetings involving UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, his Irish counterpart Bertie Ahern, Gerry Adams who is the president of the republican Sinn Fein party, and David Trimble, leader of the assembly and head of the Ulster Unionist Party. EXTRA INFORMATION In depth: Conflict and hope in Northern Ireland
RELATED Stay calm, Blair urges NI parties It appears that probably by the end of this week or early next week the Northern Ireland Assembly will be suspended by the UK Government. There will probably be some deadlines set whereby Sinn Fein is going to be expected to explain its situation. Many analysts say this is real decision time for Adams and that he must force the IRA to do more in terms of disarming. Q.

Loughcrew Megalithic Cairns

Loughcrew Cairn T on Carnbane East
Clusters of Megalithic Cairns are dotted around the Slieve na Caillaigh hills at Loughcrew, the main concentrations are on Carnbane East where Cairn T is the centrepiece and Carnbane West where Cairn L is located.
The illumination of the passage and chamber at the Winter solstice sunrise in Newgrange is world famous. Less well known is the Equinox illumination at sunrise in Cairn T at Loughcrew. The backstone of the chamber is illuminated by a beam of light at sunrise on the Spring and Autumnal Equinoxes.
The sun light is shaped by the stones of the entrance and passage and descends the backstone while moving from left to the right illuminating the solar symbols.
The key to Loughcrew Cairn T is available at Loughcrew Gardens . The owner of the land on Carnbane West where Cairn L is located is not currently allowing public access to the site.
Equinox Stone - Loughcrew Cairn T Cairn T or Hag's Cairn is of similar design to Newgrange. Traditionally described as a Passage Tomb, the wonderfully decorated backstone shows that the Cairn has a clear astronomical purpose.
