BELFAST, Northern Ireland (CNN) Rival parties in Northern Ireland endorsed a blueprint Tuesday for a coalition government of Protestants and Catholics. But there was no agreement on a timetable for disarming paramilitaries in the troubled British province. Legislators in the Belfast Assembly voted 77-29 for the new 12-member administration, after months of negotiations and two days of intense debate. As expected, all 40 Catholics and eight "neutral" politicians present voted for the plan, which will transfer some powers from the British government. Protestant leader David Trimble the new government's designated head marshaled exactly half of the Assembly's 58 pro-British Protestant members to vote for the plan.

Ireland: government attack on abortion rights defeated in referendum
By Julie Hyland 13 March 2002 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author Ireland and Portugal are the only European Union members that have strict laws against abortion. Terminations are banned on Irish territory, but in 1992 the Irish Supreme Court ruled that a suicidal 14-year-old rape victim was entitled to an abortion. The young girl had to travel abroad, as Irish doctors had no legal guarantee that they would not be prosecuted if they carried out the procedure. A 1995 referendum supported a constitutional amendment giving women the right to information about overseas abortion facilities and the right to travel abroad to terminate their pregnancy. Approximately 18 women leave the Irish Republic every day seeking an abortion, usually in Britain. In its editorial prior to the vote, the

Historically, it was the vehicle through which direct rule by the government in London was administered in Northern Ireland when the Secretary of State held all governmental functions for the region. Since the devoved institutions are currently suspended, it has re-assumed these powers. Following the devolution of power, the Northern Ireland Executive became responsible for social and economic matters, while the Secretary of State retained responsibility for constitutional and security issues as they related to Northern Ireland, in particular law and order, political affairs, policing and criminal justice. Victims’ issues are handled by the NIO's Victims Liaison Unit and the NIO also has responsibility for matters relating to the licensing and legislation for firearms and explosives. The current ministerial team is: Paul Murphy MP
Responsible for constitutional and security issues as they relate to Northern Ireland. He represents Northern Ireland interests at Cabinet level.

    Northern Ireland government suspended
    Updated 14 October 2002, 16.02
Northern Ireland Secretary Dr John Reid
The politicians running Northern Ireland have had their powers to make laws taken away by the British government. From midnight many decisions about how things are run there will by made by people in London instead. Click here to find out more about Northern Ireland It's all happened because one of the main parties has been accused of helping terrorists spy on the UK Government. Assembly set up Fact File Who wants what? Unionists , who are mainly Protestants, have traditionally wanted Northern Ireland to stay part of the UK Nationalists , who are mainly Catholics, have wanted it to join the Republic of Ireland and form a united Ireland Four years ago, after years of fighting in Northern Ireland, an agreement to try and make the country peaceful was signed by the Unionists and the Republicans. A special government called the Northern Ireland assembly was set up at Stormont. Here politicians from both sides could work together to control how things in the region were run.

History of Ireland 1969 - 1972: The start of the Troubles and the Fall of Stormont History Menu In the Republic of Ireland, economic prosperity had made most citizens happy with life and indifferent to Northern Ireland and the issue of reunification. However, it soon began to look as if the Northern Ireland government was suppressing a valid Civil Rights movement which was now collapsing into Civil War. On August 13th, the Irish Taoiseach Jack Lynch said that the Irish government would not "stand by and see innocent people injured". Some Unionists thought this was a threat to invade Northern Ireland to protect the Catholic population. It is also thought that the Irish began placing troops near the border at this time. The UK government realised in August that Northern Ireland was about to collapse into anarchy because the RUC was simply not large enough to maintain order. So, on 15 August, the UK Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, ordered the British Army into Belfast and Derry to support the RUC. (The Army is still in Northern Ireland today.) Four days later he also ordered the Stormont government to establish better community relations, introduce 'one man one vote', disband the B-specials, and disarm and restructure the RUC. With all their demands now unexpectedly met, the official Civil Rights campaign shut down.

History of Ireland 1921 - 1925: The Irish Civil War and Stabilisation of Northern Ireland History Menu De Valera, however, was furious that Collins had signed the treaty. To him it still fell much too short of what he had been fighting for, which was an independent Ireland covering all 32 counties. However, another party leader, Arthur Griffith, disagreed with de Valera's idealist stance and strongly supported the treaty. Most members of the IRA who supported the treaty were transformed into the first official Irish Army. The split between the pro-and anti-treaty was so narrow, that Sinn Fein decided to have a vote on it in the Dail. When the Dail voted 64-57 in favour of the treaty, de Valera and a considerable number of Sinn Fein members walked out in protest. Griffith subsequently replaced de Valera as Prime Minister. However it was not going to be that simple - those who had been outvoted in the Dail were not prepared to simply accept the rule of a Dail which had supported what they regarded as a 'treacherous' treaty. In April 1922, the anti-treaty IRA seized control of the Dublin Four-Courts and other key buildings. The situation grew very tense as the new Irish government tried to mediate with the IRA. However, the government quickly lost its patience and in June Michael Collins ordered the Irish Army to shell the Four-Courts. He succeeded in driving the IRA out of Dublin but had also triggered the Irish Civil War. The fire which the Irish Army started in the Four-Courts destroyed many priceless historic documents, including all of Ireland's accumulated census data. This makes the job of genealogists today much more difficult.
