Geography
The island of Ireland is the westernmost and second largest of the British Isles, in the North Atlantic Ocean. It is separated from Great Britain by Saint George's Channel on the southeast, the Irish Sea on the east, and the North Channel on the northeast. Politically, the island is divided into Northern Ireland , a constituent part of Great Britain, and the Republic of Ireland , formerly Eire. The island is divided into four historical provinces? Connaught (Connacht), Leinster, Munster, and Ulster—and administrative units called counties. The Republic of Ireland consists of Connaught, Leinster, and Munster provinces, totaling 23 counties, and in the north, 3 counties of Ulster Province. Northern Ireland consists of 26 districts, the remainder of Ulster Province. The area of the island is 84,431 sq km (32,599 sq mi) (Republic of Ireland, 70,283 sq km/27,136 sq mi; Northern Ireland, 14,148 sq km/5463 sq mi). The population of the island (1981) is 4,925,364, including the Republic of Ireland (3,443,405).
In a northern and southern direction, the maximum length of Ireland is 486 km (302 mi); its extreme width is 280 km (174 mi). Malin Head, at latitude 55?7' north, and Mizen Head, at latitude 51?7' north, are, respectively, the northernmost and southernmost points on the island; easternmost and westernmost points are demarcated by longitude 5?5' west and longitude 10?0' west.

Ireland - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Think of something greengreen grass, green trees, or maybe you have a favorite green shirt. Have you ever seen an emerald? It is a beautiful and expensive green stone. Now imagine an entire country colored green! Ireland is an island country in the northern Atlantic Ocean. Much of the country is covered in green, grassy fields. That's why Ireland is called the Emerald Isle.
Ireland is covered in grass, a few forests, and bogs. Bogs are very wet patches of land covered by moss. Sometimes bogs are very easy to see, sometimes not. If you were to walk around parts of western Ireland, you might be surprised to feel the ground moving under your feet. It would probably mean you're walking on a bog.
Ireland has lots of history. There are many old farmhouses and castles there. Many of these houses and castles have been there for hundreds of years. One of the most famous castles in Ireland is found in a town called Cork. The castle is called Blarney Castle. The castle's story involves lots of liesand kissing!

    An Outline Geography of Ireland
    CONTENTS Introduction

Ireland is an island on the western fringe of Europe between latitude 51 1/2 and 55 1/2 degrees north, and longitude 5 1/2 to 10 1/2 degrees west. Its greatest length, from Malin Head in the north to Mizen Head in the south, is 486 km and its greatest width from east to west is approximately 275 km. Since 1921 the island has been divided politically into two parts. The independent twenty-six county area, comprising 70,282 sq. km, has a population of 3,523,401 (1991). Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom and contains six of the nine counties of the ancient province of Ulster, has a population of 1,569,971 (1991). In 1973 Ireland became a member of the European Union (EU).
    Physical Landscape
The two great mountain systems of Europe, north of the Alps, converge westwards to meet and mingle in Ireland. The older (Caledonian) extends from Scandinavia through Scotland to the north and west of Ireland, where it gives rise to the rugged and mountainous landscapes of Counties Donegal, Mayo and Galway. The higher mountains are of quartzite which weathers into bare, cone-shaped peaks such as Errigal (752 m) in Donegal, Croagh Patrick (765m) in Mayo and the Twelve Bens in Galway. Structures of similar age are responsible for the Wicklow and Blackstairs mountains which extend south-westwards from Dublin Bay for a distance of more than 100 km. In these, long-continued denudation of a great anticlinal structure has exposed a granite core which now forms rounded peat-covered uplands, the crests being notched in places by glacial cirques. The mountains are penetrated by deep glacially modified valleys of which the best known is Glendalough in County Wicklow.

Ireland's Peat Bogs You are here: Main Menu Geography Menu One of Ireland's most characteristic features is the bog . Covering 1,200,000 hectares (1/6th) of the island, Ireland contains more bog, relatively speaking, than any country in Europe except Finland. Across Europe, as well as in Ireland, bogs have been exploited in recent centuries as a source of fuel. With many of the bogs in the rest of Europe already gone, Ireland's now have an increased importance to the scientific community, as well as the tourist industry. Although most bogs appear similar, there are in fact two very distinct types: Blanket Bogs are expansive, generally formed in wet or upland areas.
    Raised Bogs
are smaller, generally formed in lowland areas. Blanket Bogs Blanket bogs are found wherever there is high rainfall, which is typically in western Ireland and also in mountainous areas. They are called blanket bogs because of their appearance - from a distance they appear homogeneous and they hug the topography like a blanket. With almost 1 million hectares of Ireland covered by blanket bog, it is far more common than the smaller-scale raised bogs. Contrary to popular belief, blanket bogs are essentially a man-made feature, if inadvertent and aided somewhat by the climate. The graphic below is a cross-section of a hypothetical mountainside in Ireland showing how it evolved into a blanket bog. After the Ice Age ended, Ireland was slowly colonised by deciduous and pine forest. By 4000BC, Ireland was thickly forested across almost all of its surface. Even the highland areas were forested, if in a thinner manner.
