    INTRODUCTION
Background: Celtic tribes settled on the island in the 4th century B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the United Kingdom. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is currently being implemented.

    Overview
When extracting Census data from SASPAC, you don't always want to output data for all the zones contained in a given system file. Very often you want data for a specific area, which may be all the Wards in Greater Manchester, or a range of Postcode Districts in Scarborough, etc.You can always subset the output in a stats package after the data extraction stage, but it is more efficient (often significantly so) to define your area of interest in the SASPAC command file. Use the include and exclude commands to do this ( click here for more details ). SASPAC, however, is very fussy about how you specify the zones you want to include and exclude in your output. This page sets out the various conventions for specifying zones. SASPAC only recognises zone codes, not the real names for those areas (e.g. "03" rather than "Greater Manchester"). There are links in each section to pages giving listings of the zone cones. Census geography
The 1991 Census geography for Great Britain consists of a very straightforward hierarchy.

    Geography
The most north-westerly country in the European Union, the island of Ireland is 480 kilometres long and 305 kilometres wide. It is battered from the west by the Atlantic Ocean and lapped from the east by the choppy Irish Sea. Ireland is divided into 32 counties, including the six British-controlled counties in Northern Ireland, and four provinces - Ulster, Leinster, Connacht, and Munster. The centre of the country, or midland area, is dominated by limestone lowland, while the coasts are generally more mountainous. Glaciation has shaped the landscape, with a resultant smoothing of the coastal mountains and the deposit of large volumes of clay and sand in the central plain. Flowing from north to south is the Shannon, the longest river in Ireland and Britain. Nearly half of the Shannon above the estuary comprises three lakes; Lough Allen, Lough Ree and Lough Derg. All Ireland's principal rivers flow from the plain and an interior canal system facilitates transportation.
