Country Info Ireland Introduction Ireland General Data Ireland Maps Ireland Culture ... Ireland Time and Date Ireland Culture Back to Top Irish language declined steadily during the 19th century and was nearly wiped out by the Great Potato Famine of the 1840s, which particularly affected the Irish-speaking population. But contempt its decline the Irish language never ceased to exert a strong determine on Irish consciousness. From the mid-19th century, in the years following the famine, there was a resurgence in orthodox native Irish language and culture. This Gaelic revival led, in turn, to the Irish literary renaissance of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, in which native expression was explored and renewed by a generation of writers and academics. It also produced a resurgence in orthodox musical and dance forms. The cultural revivalism became an inspiration to the Irish nationalist fight of the early decades of the 20th century. A flowering of Irish literary works occurred with the standardization of Irish in the mid-20th century. After World War II a new wave of poets, novelists, and dramatists produced a remarkable literature in modern Irish, among them Máirtín Ó Cadhain, Máirtín Ó Direáin, and Máire Mhac an tSaoi. Since the 1970s a younger generation of writers has made valuable contributions in Irish, notably Mícheál Ó Siadhail, Gabriel Rosenstock, Michael Hartnett, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, Áine Ní Ghlinn, and Cathal Ó Searcaigh.

Ireland
Culture For a comparatively small country, Ireland has made a disproportionate contribution to world literature in all its branches, mainly in English. Poetry in Irish represents the oldest vernacular poetry in Europe with the earliest examples dating from the 6th century. In more recent times, Ireland has produced four winners of the Nobel Prize for Literature: George Bernard Shaw, William Butler Yeats, Samuel Beckett and Seamus Heaney. The early history of Irish visual art is generally considered to begin with early carvings found at sites such as Newgrange and is traced through Bronze age artifacts, particularly ornamental gold objects, and the religious carvings and illuminated manuscripts of the medieval period. During the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, a strong indigenous tradition of painting emerged, including such figures as John Butler Yeats, William Orpen, Jack Yeats and Louis le Brocquy. Reinventing Ireland: Culture, Society and the Global Economy
Edited by Dr Peadar Kirby, lecturer in international relations, DCU, Luke Gibbons and Professor Michael Cronin, dean of the faculty of humanities, DCU Pluto Press. Reviewed by Paul Keenan
This last is perhaps the best choice when considering Reinventing Ireland: Culture, Society and the Global Economy. There is a duality in the statement that perfectly encapsulates what Peadar Kirby et al are striving for in this work.
But to the contributors to Reinventing Ireland, the same quote, and indeed the change to Ireland itself, has a less wholesome quality.
From a varied pool of academic talent, drawn from numerous third-level institutions and disciplines, the ten contributors are well placed to pore over the tracks of the Tiger to come up with a clearer picture of its passing than pr specialists would prefer us to see. Their findings are presented in four areas: economy and society, the public sphere, historical legacies, and media. And those findings of just how much we have changed are, at times, disturbing.

'A Word of Ulster-Scots'

An American's observations on Northern Ireland culture by Glen Pratt The faces! The faces belonging to the plane load of my fellow Belfast-bound travellers were what I noticed first. I was struck by how familiar they looked. One could pluck up those around me and set them down in the Appalachians, the Ozarks, East Texas, or 100 other places in the rural Upper South of America and no native would be able to discern between themselves and these folks. It is no wonder really considering that these areas of America were settled in the main by Ulster-Scots. Now, I was finally coming to see the homeland of the Ulster-Scot.
It has long been a dream of mine to visit my ancestral home of Northern Ireland. This July, I came at the invitation of my good friend Maynard Hanna of the Schomberg Society in Kilkeel, Co Down, to participate in the events surrounding the Twelfth including the Border Reivers Festival there. Better hosts I could not have had than the Hannas - Maynard, Anne, Tracy, and Maldwyn.
Kilkeel, centre of Ulster-Scots faith and family, is a coastal community of farmers and fishermen where the Mourne Mountains meet the sea. Kilkeel is home to a warm people who really opened their arms to me making me feel like family. In a way, I seemed to already know these people and felt a kinship with them immediately. They are the same people I grew up with in the farming and ranching areas of the Oklahoma and Texas of my youth. To a Southerner or Texan, these people of the Mournes would strike one as good ol' 'down-home folks'. And why not? Ulster-Scots are the architects of 'down-home' in America. We are cut from the same cultural cloth.
