Our International Summer School is the oldest in Ireland and celebrates its 53rd Anniversary in 2001.
Ireland: Literary Tradition and Cultural Identity
Since earliest times the personality of Ireland has been marked by a capacity to assimilate a variety of influences while retaining a distinctive island character. Questions of identity and the fluctuating history of our relationship with Britain and the European Mainland arise constantly against a backdrop of social change and political adjustment. The 53rd International Summer School explores Irish society and its diverse heritage through the lenses of modern scholarship, 20th century literature and contemporary political debate. The Sumnmer School Our 2-week programme will examine Irish culture and tradition through a wide spectrum of topics, covering Art, Archaeology, Folklore, Literature, Theatre, Music, History and Politics. The course will provide new insights for students already familiar with Ireland, but is equally accessible to the newcomer. Lectures and seminars will be complemented by visits, field tours and musical events. Lectures will be given by Faculty members of international renown and by distinguished guest speakers from the Arts and public life in Ireland. It is intended to hold a panel discussion on Northern Ireland, with representatives from diverse shades of political opinion. Participants come from a wide range of backgrounds and countries, from 18 to 80. About half of them have English as their first language (you need a good knowledge of English to follow lectures and get the most from the excellent social life).

David Miller (ed) Rethinking Northern Ireland: Culture Ideology and Colonialism Longman, London, 1998. pp. 315 ISBN 0-582-30287-0 (pbk) L17.99 Reviewed by John Sullivan Some of the articles collected here employ conventional political analysis, but the most interesting ones focus on the representation of the conflict in the media and in academic discourse. David Miller's contribution `Colonialism and Academic Representation of the Troubles' describes the role of the Northern Ireland academic establishment in stifling critical research, and supporting the official picture of the British government as a well-meaning mediator, with no responsibility for the violence. Mike Tomlinson's `Walking Backwards into the Sunset' details the role of state intelligence agencies in sectarian killings, especially their collusion with the uDA.

Ireland (10/04) The earliest inhabitantspeople of a mid-Stone Age culturearrived about 6000 BC. About 4,000 years later, tribes from southern Europe arrived and established a high Neolithic culture, leaving behind gold ornaments and huge stone monuments. The Bronze Age people, who arrived during the next 1,000 years, produced elaborate gold and bronze ornaments and weapons. ... The Iron Age arrived abruptly in the fourth century BC with the invasion of the Celts, a tall, energetic people who had spread across Europe and Great Britain in the preceding centuries. It was a war between the Irish chieftains and the Vikings which first led to the involvement of the English. Richard of Clare, Earl of Pembroke (nicknamed Strongbow), was invited by one the chieftains to support his claims, but instead Strongbow conquered almost the entire country with only a tiny force of archers and mounted knights in 1169-70. A stream of Norman families moved across the Irish Sea, effectively colonizing the country and coming into conflict with the Irish tribal system. Repeated and largely unsuccessful efforts from the 14th century onwards were made to bring the island under control. The turbulent and increasingly polarized political life of Ireland took a new and bitter twist after the English Civil War, when the Irish rose in favor of the deposed monarchy in 1649.
The victorious Oliver Cromwell led an army across the Irish Sea and the rebellion was ruthlessly put down. Over the next few years, all Catholic land was expropriated and given to a new wave of Protestant immigrants. The subsequent Act of Union, passed in 1801, incorporated the whole of Ireland, along with England, Scotland and Wales, into the United Kingdom. However, the grossly inadequate response of the Government to the potato famine of 1845/6, which decimated the Irish population through death and emigration, highlighted its lack of interest in the welfare of the Irish people. Various independence movements pursued an almost continuous struggle against the Government until Home Rule was granted in 1920 (the Easter Rising of 1916, centered on the Main Post Office in Dublin, was a particular landmark).

    36. Rethinking Northern Ireland Provides A Coherent And Critical
In Rethinking Northern ireland culture, Ideology and colonialism edited by David Miller, thirteen contributors, mostly sociologists and/or media
    http://staff.stir.ac.uk/david.miller/publications/Rethinking.html
Rethinking Northern Ireland provides a coherent and critical alternative account of the Northern Ireland conflict. While most writing on Northern Ireland is informed by British propaganda, unionist ideology or the currently popular 'ethnic conflict' paradigm which allows the analyst to wallow in a fascination with tribal loyalty. Rethinking Northern Ireland sets the record straight by re-embedding the conflict in Ireland in the history of and literature on imperialism and colonialism. It includes material on neglected topics such as the role of Britain in the conflict, on gender, on sectarianism and on culture in Northern Ireland. The book presents a formiddable challenge to the shibboleths of contemporary debate on Northern Ireland. A just and lasting peace necessitates thorougt re-evaluation and Rethinking Northern Ireland provides a stimulus to that urgent task. Sport plays an important role in Ireland. There is rugby of course, but also other typically Irish sports such as Hurling and Gaelic football . Players are members of the GAA ( Gaelic Athletic Association ) which exists throughout the world wherever there are Irish people. Hurling
This game, which is the fastest in the world, looks like field hockey.
Rules of the game: To send the sliotar (leather ball) between the goal posts with the Hurley . You score 3 points (a goal) if it goes under the bar and 1 point above the bar. You really need to keep an eye on the ball. It's very fast!
Note: the first Sunday in September is the All-Ireland Final in Croke Park in Dublin. It's very lively! Gaelic football
The sport that Irish people prefer. It looks like traditional football but the rules are similar.
