Understanding the history of Ireland allows for a deeper appreciation of the ancient monuments found there today, as well as reasons for the heartache of contemporary disputes. The story of Ireland is an ancient tale, older than the pyramids of Egypt, and full of more turmoil, upheaval, and romance than any daytime drama.

Irish Theatre
William Butler Yates and Isabella Augusta Persse, Lady Gregory founded the Irish Literary Theatre in 1899. Its purpose was to foster Irish poetic drama. However, nationalism grasped the country, and these literary figures began staging native-born plays. This literary endeavor became the National Theatre Society and its home became the Abbey Theatre. Other literary greats who contributed their talents as directors and dramatists included J.M. Synge and A.E. (George Russell). Irish history was the theme of many of the productions in the early years. After World War I there were topics on Northern Ireland, the 1916 Easter Rising and geography of a divided Ireland. Lady Gregory, in her writings, worked at revising the Victorian images of Ireland as a land of 'buffoones', of blarney-speaking, whiskey-swilling, stage Irishmen. The Celtic Revival was a return to the Irish language and mythology. There was a hunger for culture in music and linguistics. The 1890s were a crucial period for the reclamation of cultural Ireland. Stories and plays were written about figures in Ireland's past such as CuChulainn, and the Ulster cycle.

world over, probably more than any other, from music, art, myths, language, food and literature. For a very long time, with no newspapers, radio or TV, news and events were put to music and relayed by the Bards that travelled the land. A Bard was always welcome, as his music and poetry was entertaining as well as bringing news of what was happening throughout the country side. Prior to the arrival of the sons of King Milesius (Milidh) the mythological tribes in Ireland were said to include the Partholonians , the Nemedians , the Fomorians Fir Bolgs and the Tuatha de Danann . Stories of these people as well as much about the early centuries of Ireland's past have been passed down through time in the form of various annals, the 'Annals of the Four Masters' among the more prominent of these pseudo-historical accounts of ancient Hibernia (Eire, Ireland). Serious scholars have always held that Ireland's history is not truly knowable before about 500 AD. The original waves of Celtic language immigration have been variously placed in a large window from 2000 to 300 BC, with many citing the time around 500BC. The author T.F. O'Rahilly proposes 4 major Celtic invasions of Ireland:

WORLDGUIDE Introduction See Image Gallery Events Transport Money Essential Info RELATED Thorn Tree Forum Postcards Travel Links It's said that Ireland, once visited, is never forgotten, and for once the blarney rings true. The Irish landscape has a mythic resonance, the country's history is almost tangible, and its people seem put on earth expressly to restore faith in humanity. The weather may sometimes give you the impression that you're swimming through an airborne ocean, but the truly luminous greens, luxuriant wildflowers, and afternoons spent holed up in riotous pubs will more than console you for the webbed feet you'll need to grow.
When To Go
If you go to Ireland in July or August, you can expect reasonably warm weather, longer days and a lively menu of festivals. However, this is peak season, which presents some challenges if you're wanting a bit of solitude.

    Irish Culture
    Derived From the Ancient Celts

The Irish people are famous for their optimism in the face of hardship, and their unmatched hospitality. Irish culture is joyful - expressed through numerous cultural festivals, including an international film festival, a jazz festival, and a folk music festival in Cork; and theatre festivals in Dublin. Wexford has an opera festival, concentrating on the lesser-known operas. Many towns have annual arts festivals, including visual art, music, poetry, and prose writing, including the awarding of prizes and the sharing of artistic efforts. Dozens of other festivals and holidays are celebrated each year throughout the country, including of course, St. Patrick's Day.
Many contemporary Irish celebrations have their origins in elaborate pagan Celtic ceremonies. Through the years, Christian influences changed the meanings and practices of these early customs, but many of the dates and core traditions remain. Irish Art and Music
The origins of Irish art are obscure, dating back to perhaps as early as 3,000 BC in tombs and sanctuaries along the
