Did Knowth's builders hold a comprehensive astronomical knowledge which they encoded in stone?
An abridged version of a talk given by Anthony Murphy during Earth Day 2000 in Dublin INTRODUCTION Newgrange has long been heralded as the greatest ancient Irish site. Its beautiful Neolithic art, stunning white quartz facade and great standing stones make it a visually impressive testament to its ancient builders. In terms of archaeology, art, beauty and size, Newgrange is equalled by just one other monument - its neighbour, Knowth.

Threat to urban research as archive faces closure
In a decision that could have momentous consequences for archaeology in London and elsewhere, the Museum of London has drawn up plans to close down its archaeological archive - comprising the vast majority of finds made in 25 years of archaeological work in the capital - following cuts in the Museum's central-government grant. Barring a last-minute change of heart on the Museum's grant by the Department of National Heritage (DNH), the Museum has now decided to place the 100,000-or-so boxes of pottery and bone, tile, glass and other finds contained in its warehouse into `dead storage' - the finds will no longer be actively curated, access to the material will be restricted or stopped altogether, and no new finds will be accepted. The Museum also expects to lose about 40 jobs, and to reduce its education services for local schools. The Museum, which loses UKP0.5m this year and UKP1.2m next, is not alone in suffering cuts to its budget - DNH grants to museums and galleries generally fall by UKP13m this year (from UKP226.3m to UKP213.3m), and by a further UKP5.5m next year. But the effects of the cuts are doubled for the Museum of London because of its particular funding arrangements - it is jointly funded by the Corporation of London, which is obliged to match the DNH grant, reducing its own if necessary. Nick Merriman, Head of the Museum's Early Department, stressed that the archive was `the prime resource' for understanding the history of London, and that restricting access to the material would be a major setback for research. `It is used intensively by all the archaeological units that work in London. Hundreds of people consult it every year,' he said.

      UCD School of Archaeology
I have pleasure in welcoming you to UCD School of Archaeology. Our School has eight full-time teaching staff, all of whom are acknowledged experts in their fields of research. Other staff members include a draughtsperson, a computer and information technology specialist and an excavation and post-excavation specialist. The School also has a vibrant postgraduate community many of whom act as tutors and demonstrators for undergraduate classes. Archaeology is an exciting subject and a rewarding career. The massive growth in the Irish economy, which has led to urban renewal and the development of new roads, has greatly increased employment opportunities for archaeologists in recent years, while the increased general interest in archaeology as a leisure activity can be seen in the continuing growth of the heritage industry. Graduates of this School have always been successful in finding employment in professional archaeology and in other walks of life. Whether you intend staying with us to completion of your BA and beyond, or choose to pursue your other subjects after First Year, we hope you enjoy your time in UCD, and that you find both academic success and personal reward during your time here.

What little is known of pre-Christian Ireland comes from a few references in Roman writings, Irish poetry and myth, and archaeology. The earliest inhabitants, people of a mid-Stone Age, or Mesolithic, culture, arrived sometime after 8000 BC, when the climate had become more hospitable following the retreat of the polar icecaps. About three or four millennia later, agriculture was introduced from the continent, leading to the establishment of a high Neolithic culture, characterised by the appearance of huge stone monuments, many of them astronomically aligned. This culture apparently prospered, and the island became more densely populated. The Bronze Age, which began around 2500 BC, saw the production of elaborate gold and bronze ornaments and weapons. Two Henry III pennies of mid-13th-century date, and a lead weight were also found, as were a lathe-turned lid with a mirror inset and a lathe-turned platter. The site may have been in use as early as the 6th century. The present fort was built subsequently and was occupied, at least intermittently, until the 13th century.
