10 June 2005 NORTHERN IRELAND ARCHAEOLOGY DAYS DOE’s Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) has invited the public to attend Archaeology Day events over this month’s summer solstice. Michael Coulter, Director of Built Heritage EHS, said: "We are fortunate in Northern Ireland that our heritage is so richly diverse and this will be reflected in the variety of events which will take place over the Archaeology Days this weekend (18/19 June). "We are offering opportunities to see, for instance, what happens at an archaeological dig, or to observe the construction of an early Christian house. There will be demonstrations of ancient weaponry and crafts, tours of an ancient battle site and more. "Archaeology Days provides everyone, young and old, with the chance to take part in a unique insight into Northern Ireland’s archaeology and to answer those niggling questions of how our Ancestors lived in the past." Many of the events, provided by a host of organisations, are free. NOTES TO EDITORS:
Some of the local events taking place:
  • Belfast: Make your own prehistoric pottery, Ulster Museum; tour of Edenderry village; tour of Black and Divis Mountains prior to the National Trust making the hills open to the general public.
  • 13. Young People Dig Archaeology Days

27 May 2004 YOUNG PEOPLE DIG ARCHAEOLOGY DAYS The ancient and exotic will be revealed on Northern Ireland’s Archaeology Days next month. In Bangor today, DOE’s Environment and Heritage Service announced a series of archaeology events, which it has coordinated with other organisations on the June Summer Solstice. Members of the North Down Heritage Centre’s Young Archaeologists Club took part in today’s launch - eager to uncover as much as they could about the dozens of events. Dr Chris Lynn of EHS asked: "Have you ever wanted to see what happens at an archaeological dig, or see the rebuilding of a wedge tomb? Do you want to see demonstrations of ancient weaponry and crafts at close quarters, or perhaps take a tour of an ancient battlesite? "Well, Archaeology Days will provide these opportunities for everyone, of all ages, with the chance to gain an unique insight into Northern Ireland’s past. "We are fortunate that Northern Ireland’s heritage is richly diverse and this is reflected in the variety of events which will take place over the 19-21 June weekend. Many will be free of charge and I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to join us and discover our past through archaeology!" NOTES TO EDITORS:

MLitt in Medieval Scottish Studies Proportion of final assessment: 25% Staff: Dr Dauvit Broun (Course convenor)
Dr Stephen Boardman (term 3 only) (Edinburgh)
Dr S. T. Driscoll James Fraser (Edinburgh)
    Dr Martin MacGregor
    Bronagh Ní Chonaill
Dr Theo van Heijnsbergen Outcomes Acquire a specialist knowledge and understanding of two specific topics relating to their particular interests leading up to a dissertation project
Develop a critical understanding of primary sources and secondary materials in two topics in one or more of the fields of archaeology, history, and literature
Regular contact with a practicing researcher in your chosen topics relating to medieval Scotland
Attain a level of expertise and knowledge which will enable you to embark on research at an advanced level Content For most students the course consists of two modules of supervised reading (one per term in terms 2 and 3). All students must take at least one. Exceptionally a student may be permitted to take an enhanced honours module (see below). The modules of supervised reading are based on eight individual/small group meetings held approximately once a week over terms 2 and 3. Each student will be assigned, after discussion with the degree programme organiser, a topic for each term that will be taught by a member of staff (or two members of staff) at a time convenient to both parties. At the first meeting for each module (in the first teaching week of the term) the student and their tutor(s) will draw up and agree a brief statement of anticipated outcomes. It is expected that students will take modules that are relevant to the topic they will be pursuing in their dissertation.
