Iraq debate centers on immediacy of threat
Former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger says the United States should persuade its allies to join in an Iraqi attack. WASHINGTON (CNN) A member of the first Bush administration said Sunday that it would be unwise for the United States to attack Iraq without the backing of its allies unless it's clear that President Saddam Hussein is on the brink of acquiring nuclear weapons. If the threat is so severe as Vice President Dick Cheney indicated last week the White House should persuade other nations to join the United States in a fight against Iraq, former U.S. Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger told NBC's "Meet the Press." Cheney and others in the current Bush administration have said that Saddam has biological and chemical weapons, which he has used against his own people and other countries such as Iran. EXTRA INFORMATION Where Europe stands Where Iraq's neighbors stand "If he's on the verge of getting nuclear weapons, I'm ready to do whatever has to be done," said Eagleburger, who led the State Department briefly under former President George H.W. Bush from late 1992 to early 1993.

Rebuilding Iraq (CNN) The search for Iraq's suspected weapons of mass destruction is being stepped up as international pressure mounts for the coalition to produce evidence that would support its decision to wage war on Iraq. A task force of more than 1,300 experts has been formed in an expansion of efforts to find proof that Iraq had a program of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons. The Iraq Survey Group comprises experts from the United States, Britain and Australia. Between 250 and 300 of those team members including some inspectors who were in Iraq before U.N. teams were expelled in 1998 will visit suspected weapons sites, said U.S. Maj. Gen. Keith Dayton, who will lead the team. Dayton estimated that slightly fewer than 200 U.S. personnel have so far checked about a third of Iraq's suspected weapons sites.

SPECIAL REPORT War Tracker On the Scene Map U.S. Iraq ... Special Report BLACKPOOL, England (CNN) Former U.S. President Bill Clinton has supported calls for a new U.N. resolution giving weapons inspectors unrestricted access in Iraq. Speaking to the Labour Party conference, Clinton also praised Tony Blair's tough stance on Iraq and his efforts to resolve the crisis within the framework of the United Nations. "I support the efforts of the prime minister and President Bush to get tougher with Saddam Hussein," Clinton said. "We need a strong new resolution calling for unrestricted inspections. The restrictions imposed in 1998 are unacceptable and won't do the job. There should be a deadline and no lack of clarity about what Iraq must do. "I agree with the many Republicans and Democrats in America and many here who want to go through the U.N. to bring the weight of world opinion together, to offer one more chance for inspections," the former president said.

Hutton also vowed that the row between the government and the BBC would not cloud the probe. No dates have been set for Blair to front the inquiry but the investigation is set to continue on August 11. German leaders warn on Iraq attack
Chancellor Schroeder: "Not prepared to engage in adventures" BERLIN, Germany German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer have cautioned against a possible U.S. attack on Iraq, stressing the need to solve the broader Middle East conflict first. "I can only warn against talking about or considering a war against Iraq without thinking of the consequences and without a political concept for the whole Middle East," Schroeder told a rally of his Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Hanover on Saturday. Fischer expressed a similar position in a television interview to be broadcast on Sunday. "To talk now of having to push through a change in government in Baghdad with a military intervention, that's a false assessment of priorities," he said. Schroeder reiterated his view that Germany stood beside the United States after the September 11 attacks, but was not prepared to engage in "adventures."

Iraq calls charges of mass executions 'propaganda'
An Iraqi spokesman denies the allegations that mass executions were carried out In this story: January 1, 1998 Web posted at: 6:42 p.m. EST (2342 GMT) BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) Iraq dismissed as "a propaganda campaign" a claim by the United States that hundreds of Iraqi political prisoners had been executed in recent weeks. "The American announcement ... is part of an organized propaganda campaign," said a spokesman for the Culture and Information Ministry in a statement carried by the Iraqi news agency INA. U.S. State Department spokesman James Foley said in Washington on Wednesday that there were "credible reports that the Iraqi regime may have ordered the summary execution of hundreds, if not thousands, of political detainees." Foley said the United States could not confirm the reports or the executions, at least some of which are believed to have taken place at Abu Ghraib prison on the outskirts of Baghdad.
