note: I am also looking for recipes from Iraq. I think that eating food of a region helps one's understanding of the culture. It is interesting that I have found NO recipe books for Iraq. By Patrick Martin 16 April 2003 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author US government officials were warned repeatedly about possible damage to irreplaceable artifacts, either from American bombs and missiles or from post-war instability after the removal of the Iraqi government, but they did nothing to prevent it. Their inaction constitutes a gross violation of the 1954 Hague Convention on the protection of artistic treasures in wartime, adopted in response to the Nazi looting of occupied Europe during World War II. At least 80 percent of the 170,000 separate items stored at the National Museum of Antiquities in Baghdad were stolen or destroyed during the looting rampage that followed the US military occupation of Baghdad. The museum was the greatest single storehouse of materials from the civilizations of ancient Mesopotamia, including Sumeria, Akkadia, Babylonia, Assyria and Chaldea. It also held artifacts from Persia, Ancient Greece, the Roman Empire and various Arab dynasties. Ironically, the only hope for the survival of some archaeological treasures is that they might have been removed from the museum before the war, to be displayed in one or another of the private residences of Saddam Hussein and his family. A large selection of artifacts made of gold was stored for safekeeping at the Iraqi Central Bank, but that facility was looted and burned as well.

Chileans disrobe, protest war on Iraq
One of the naked demonstrators painted "PEACE" on his chest. Story Tools SANTIAGO, Chile (Reuters) About 300 Chileans stripped naked on Saturday to protest a war on Iraq, demanding President Ricardo Lagos vote against the United States in the U.N. Security Council. In a park area cordoned off by police, a mostly young crowd of bare-bottomed men and women jumped up and down and shouted "No to war. Yes to peace," then held up their hands and sang popular Latin American protest songs. "Lagos, Cut the crap. Chile says no to war," said a large red banner. Chile, one of six "swing votes" on the Security Council, is undecided on whether to support a draft resolution backed by the United States and Britain that would authorize military action against Iraq, which Washington suspects of hiding weapons of mass destruction. "This is a call to society to join together and get naked now against the war because it means getting rid of clothing, uniforms, social classes, flags and ideologies all those things that divide us," said protest organizer Francisco Elgueta. The protesters later put their clothes on and marched to the presidential palace. Police sprayed them with water cannons and arrested several people.

He also calls the report to the U.N. Security Council earlier this week by chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix "meager," focusing on "negative presumptions and allegations that are groundless." Sabri detailed Iraq's stance in a 14-page letter to the January president of the Security Council, Jean-Marc de la Sabliere of France. CNN was provided a five-page summary of the letter by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry. "Iraq has offered all efforts required to implement Resolution 1441 and regrettably the UNMOVIC statement mentions a charge saying Iraq has not genuinely accepted the disarmament of its weapons," according to the summary, which was written in Arabic.

SPECIAL REPORT War Tracker On the Scene Map U.S. Iraq ... Special Report LONDON, England Britain has published a dossier of torture, rape and other human rights abuses carried out by the Iraqi regime. The report, released by UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw on Monday, contains graphic first-hand accounts by Iraqi victims of the regime's human rights abuses, as well as intelligence material and evidence from aid charities working in Iraq. It makes clear that the abuses are carried out as a policy of the Iraqi dictator, Straw said. But human rights group have expressed scepticism about the motives behind the dossier's publication. Amnesty International secretary general Irene Khan told the Press Association: "This selective attention to human rights is nothing but a cold and calculated manipulation of the work of human rights activists. "Let us not forget that the same governments turned a blind eye to Amnesty International's reports of widespread human rights violations in Iraq before the Gulf War."

Story Tools SPECIAL REPORT War Tracker On the Scene Map U.S. Iraq ... Special Report WASHINGTON (CNN) A U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter was shot down by small arms fire Wednesday night in south-central Iraq, military officials said, but there were conflicting reports on casualties. The Pentagon said seven soldiers were killed and four others wounded and rescued. A statement from U.S. Central Command headquarters in Qatar said only six people were on the Black Hawk and that casualties could not be confirmed. The Central Command statement said the chopper crashed around 7:30 p.m. (10:30 a.m. EST). Col. Tom Bright, the Marine Corps chief at the U.S. Central Command's joint operations center in Qatar, said an investigation has been launched into what happened. "We do have a helicopter that went down and unfortunately there are some casualties," he said. "It's very unfortunate." The crash happened near Karbala, about 50 miles from Baghdad. The city has seen heavy fighting in recent days between coalition forces and Iraqi Republican Guard units.

Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazil, left, is received by Syrian Assistant Foreign Minister Eissa Darwish, right, Saturday in Damascus. Story Tools DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) Iraq's neighbors opened a conference Saturday on the impact of the U.S.-led war that ousted Saddam Hussein, but Baghdad's interim government insulted by a last-minute invitation snubbed the talks and vowed to reject any decisions made there. Iraqi officials planned to use the forum in the Syrian capital, Damascus, to demand an end to cross-border infiltration by foreign fighters believed to be participating in a recent upsurge of violence in Iraq. The meeting was attended by foreign ministers of Syria, Iran, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Jordan, plus the largest Arab country politically influential Egypt. They discussed ways to restore stability to Iraq and reviewed the war's effects on the region, according to a statement released by the ministers. The ministers also contacted Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari to renew an invitation to attend Sunday's talks, the statement said. It was unclear whether he accepted.

Iraq refuses to back down from latest U.N. standoff
Butler
November 1, 1998
Web posted at: 2:45 p.m. EST (1945 GMT) In this story: BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) Iraq refused to back down in its latest standoff with the United Nations on Sunday and said it will resume cooperation with the world body only when international sanctions against Baghdad are lifted. Chief U.N. weapons inspector Richard Butler immediately criticized Iraq's position and said that Baghdad's decision on Saturday to suspend all cooperation with U.N. inspectors and halt long-term weapons monitoring was "truly serious." The U.N. Security Council, which has strongly condemned Iraq's move, says it will only consider lifting the sanctions imposed during the Gulf War if Iraq complies with inspectors in charge of dismantling the country's weapons of mass destruction.

WAR CRIMES
A Report on United States War Crimes Against Iraq to the Commission of Inquiry for the International War Crimes Tribunal
by Ramsey Clark and Others Incinerated body of an Iraqi soldier on the "Highway of Death," a name the press has given to the road from Mutlaa, Kuwait, to Basra, Iraq. U.S. planes immobilized the convoy by disabling vehicles at its front and rear, then bombing and straffing the resulting traffic jam for hours. More than 2,000 vehicles and tens of thousands of charred and dismembered bodies littered the sixty miles of highway. The clear rapid incineration of the human being [pictured above] suggests the use of napalm, phosphorus, or other incindiary bombs. These are anti-personnel weapons outlawed under the 1977 Geneva Protocols. This massive attack occurred after Saddam Hussein announced a complete troop withdrawl from Kuwait in compliance with UN Resolution 660. Such a massacre of withdrawing Iraqi soldiers violates the Geneva Convention of 1949, common article 3, which outlaws the killing of soldiers who "are out of combat." There are, in addition, strong indications that many of those killed were Palestinian and Kuwaiti civilians trying to escape the impending seige of Kuwait City and the return of Kuwaiti armed forces. No attempt was made by U.S. military command to distinguish between military personnel and civilians on the "highway of death." The whole intent of international law with regard to war is to prevent just this sort of indescriminate and excessive use of force.

Britain's 'sexed-up' dosier Kelly's committee testimony ... Thames Valley Police LONDON, England (CNN) Police have found a body matching that of UK official David Kelly, who denied being the "mole" in the Iraq weapons of mass destruction dossier row. On Friday Prime Minister Tony Blair's officials said an independent judicial inquiry would be held into the circumstances leading up to the scientist's death, if confirmed. Kelly, a former U.N. weapons inspector and microbiologist who had visited Iraq dozens of times under Saddam Hussein, went missing from his home on Thursday afternoon after telling his wife he was going for a walk, police said. His family, who live in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, about 80 km (50 miles) northwest of London, alerted police when he failed to return by 11:45 p.m. The body was discovered at Harrowdown Hill, Oxfordshire, about five miles from Kelly's home. No formal identification is expected until Saturday.
