    Crucial US-Iraq history unearthed
US supplied biological weapons materials to Saddam's Iraq during the 1980s in contravention of international law
President Bush: We've also discovered through intelligence that Iraq has a growing fleet of manned and unmanned aerial vehicles that could be used to disperse chemical or biological weapons across broad areas. We're concerned that Iraq is exploring ways of using these UAVS for missions targeting the United States. And, of course, sophisticated delivery systems aren't required for a chemical or biological attack; all that might be required are a small container and one terrorist or Iraqi intelligence operative to deliver it.

Cincinnati, Ohio Iraqgate is the forgotten scandal of the 1980s and early 1990s. Long before President Bush shamelessly told lies like those cited above, there was a time when with covert US support, Iraq did develop and possess a number of very lethal agents. They only were able to do so with US help.

The United States begins talks on the possibility of invading Iraq to remove Saddam Hussein from office and implement a democratic form of government.

Iraq Time and Date Iraq History Back to Top Iraq, A Republic since the 1958 coup d'etat that ended the reign of King Faisal II, became a sovereign, independent state in 1932. Although the modern state, the Republic of Iraq, is quite young, the history of the land and its people dates back more than 5,000 years. Indeed, Iraq contains the world's valuableest known archaeological sites. Here, in ancient Mesopotamia -the land between the rivers, the first civilization-that of Sumerappeared in the Near East. contempt the millennium separating the two epochs, Iraqi history displays a continuity shaped by adaptation to the ebbings and flowings of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Allowed to flow unchecked, the rivers wrought destruction in terrible floods that inundated whole towns. When the rivers were controlled by irrigation dikes and other waterworks, the land became extremely fertile.

Conflcit with Iraq: History lesson: military crushed by broken supply lines
Saturday, March 29, 2003 By LANCE GAY , Scripps Howard News Service Generals have learned bitter lessons of what happens when they let their armies march too far ahead of their supply lines in Iraq. Lawrence of Arabia became a British hero in the deserts of Jordan and Iraq during World War I by rallying feuding Arab tribes to harass supply lines for Turkey's army and blow up railroads carrying munitions. Earlier in the same war, on the outskirts of Baghdad, Britain learned the lesson of what happens when armies don't pay attention to supply lines when it suffered its worst single defeat of the war. Maj. Gen. Charles Townsend landed at Basra promising to bring democracy to Iraq. Some 51,800 British soldiers were slaughtered after heading north with only six weeks of supplies and no hope of getting more after two rescue missions failed.

Recent attacks on Shi'a targets in Iraq raised fears of sectarian violence. But analysts say religion plays a rather modest role in Iraqi society. The country's history, they note, provides more examples of ethnic violence against the Kurds, for example or political turmoil, such as coups, than conflicts along religious lines.
Prague, 10 March 2004 (RFE/RL) Last week's bombings in Baghdad and Karbala, in which hundreds of Shi'a were killed or injured, raised fears that sectarianism might emerge as a serious threat to stability.

Thus, I tried to collect as much information as possible about the Iraqi history. The main objective was to provide a historical profile of Iraq that is both short and satisfying at the same time. Here you will find breif information about the different stages of the Historical development in Iraq, from the oldest known traces of the early human populations in this part of the world until the recent days in a chronological order. I hope that this humble effort would help younger Iraqi generations in diaspora to maintain a better knowledge about the History of their Homeland, and at the same time I hope that every friend of the Iraqi people would find some useful information regarding the history of Iraq. Please... Notice that the long and rich History of Iraq is much greater than being displayed entirely on few pages on internet; yet this page could serve as a proper start point.

I n ancient times the land area now known as modern Iraq was almost equivalent to Mesopotamia the land between the two rivers Tigris and Euphrates (in Arabic, the Dijla and Furat, respectively), the Mesopotamian plain was called the Fertile Crescent. This region is known as the Cradle of Civilization; was the birthplace of the varied civilizations that moved us from prehistory to history. By Christina Asquith BAGHDAD For 15 years, high school history teacher Abtsam Jassom has dutifully taught 20th-century history according to the Baath Party. In it, America was the greedy invader, every Iraqi war was justified and victorious, and Zionists were the cause of world suffering. Now, however, with the ouster of former President Saddam Hussein, US officials say teachers will finally be free to teach a more factual account of historical events. But the question is: Whose account will that be?
