Bush, Blair make case against Iraq
Confusion over Iraqi nuke report
President Bush hosted British Prime Minister Tony Blair Saturday for talks on Iraq. CAMP DAVID, Maryland (CNN) President Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair said Saturday there is ample evidence that Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has weapons of mass destruction, but critics questioned that conclusion and late Saturday some of the evidence the leaders cited was brought into question. Both leaders cited a report indicating possible nuclear construction by Iraq, although a spokesman for the international agency in charge of nuclear inspection said no conclusions could be drawn from the report. But by Saturday evening the whole issue of the existence of a "new report" was being denied by officials at the White House, the National Security Council, and the International Atomic Energy Agency, the supposed author of the alleged report. Blair said on Saturday morning, "We only need look at the report from the International Atomic Energy Agency this morning, showing what has been going on at a former nuclear weapon site."

HELSINKI, Finland (Reuters) Finland's first female prime minister, who quit last year accused of using leaked documents on Iraq to win an election, actively sought secret information, the court heard on the first day of her trial on Wednesday. Anneli Jaatteenmaki faces a possible fine for inciting or assisting the breach of official secrets. Prosecutors say she repeatedly asked a presidential aide for information on U.S.-Finland talks on Iraq, an allegation she has denied. The former aide accused of leaking the documents, Martti Manninen, also faces a potential fine. He has said Jaatteenmaki pressed him for documents and even gave him a secret fax number. "I did not think that receiving faxes or sending them could be wrong," Jaatteenmaki told the court on Wednesday. Manninen's lawyer told the court the information sent was not secret and Manninen had no idea how it would be used.

Iraq sanctions in balance
BAGHDAD, Iraq A U.N. deadline to reach agreement on introducing 'smart' sanctions against Iraq is about to expire. The British plan would aim to ease restrictions on civilian goods, retain bans on military hardware and review a list of "dual use" supplies that can be used for both military and civilian purposes. But ahead of a vote, due to take place on Tuesday, there is some disagreement among the U.N. Security Council on what sanctions regime should be imposed and Iraq is calling for all sanctions to be lifted. If the vote does not take place, or the 'smart sanctions' plan is thrown out, the council is expected to extend the existing food-for-oil scheme. Horse trading on Iraq
By Marguerite Michaels and Karen Tumulty
Story Tools In refusing to allow U.S. troops to use its military bases in a war on Iraq, Turkey turned its back on some pretty sweet inducements. The U.S. had offered Turkey $15 billion in loans and grants, and even promised that U.S. troops would wear Turkish textiles, breaking the Pentagon's long-standing "Buy American" policy. The U.S. still needs nine of 15 votes to pass a new resolution in the U.N. Security Council, and the horse trading in an effort to woo backing continues:

Blix looks to Iraq for 'substance'
Hans Blix Story Tools UNITED NATIONS (CNN) Just days before leaving for Iraq, chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix said Tuesday that he has specific expectations for this weekend's visit primarily Iraqi cooperation. The inspectors have "made it absolutely clear" that the principal task to be accomplished in this third visit to Baghdad will be "how can Iraq assure us, and the Security Council, that it will actively seek and present any items or programs which are proscribed," he said in a briefing for the U.N. Correspondents Association. Blix added that if weapons of mass destruction do not exist, Iraq's goal should be "to seek and present credible evidence for their absence." U.N. Resolution 1441 calls on Iraq to destroy any chemical, nuclear and biological weapons or face serious consequences. Iraq has consistently denied possessing such weapons. Blix and Mohamed ElBaradei, chief of the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency, will return to Iraq February 8 for a round of talks with Iraqi officials.

Malveaux: Bush sees difference between Iraq, North Korea
CNN's Suzanne Malveaux Story Tools
CRAWFORD, Texas (CNN) President Bush is warning against comparing North Korea's nuclear weapons program to the threat from Iraq. He said he's confident that the stalemate with Pyongyang is not going to lead to military action. CNN White House Correspondent Suzanne Malveaux on Wednesday discussed the president's recent comments about this. MALVEAUX: President Bush's New Year's resolution, he said yesterday, was to resolve these conflicts peacefully. It was at a coffee shop in Crawford, where he answered the one question that has been on so many people's minds why the administration is considering military action with Iraq, which says it has no weapons of mass destruction, but not with North Korea, which does have nuclear weapons and has been making some moves to possibly produce more. President Bush said that when it comes to North Korea, it's not a military showdown, but a diplomatic one. He still believes that a peaceful resolution through diplomacy and economic pressure [can be done].
