Where Iraq Fits in the War on Terror
By MADELEINE K. ALBRIGHT
The president made a strong case for international action that results either in Iraqi compliance with its obligations or the establishment of a new and, ultimately, democratic government in Baghdad. There should be bipartisan backing for such a policy here at home, and the president wisely has chosen to solicit global support instead of attempting to go it alone. I hope, however, that the president will not be pushed by his hard-line advisers into an unwise timetable for military action. We should pick this fight at a moment that best suits our interests. And right now, our primary interest remains the thorough destruction and disruption of Al Qaeda and related terrorist networks. Earlier this week, the International Institute of Strategic Studies released a summary of Iraq's military capabilities that foreshadowed the president's words yesterday. Iraq likely has significant quantities of biological warfare agents and some chemical munitions. It is striving to acquire or develop nuclear weapons, but there is no evidence it has succeeded. It may have a dozen missiles that could be used to threaten nearby states. Saddam Hussein is the enemy we know. Since the administration of former President George H.W. Bush, each time Mr. Hussein has pushed, we have pushed back. Today, American and British planes enforce no-flight zones over 40 percent of his country and a maritime force prevents weapons from reaching Iraq by sea. Saddam Hussein's military is far weaker than it was a decade ago. And he must surely be aware that if he ever again tries to attack another country he will be obliterated. All that is grounds for calm, but not complacency.

We have been liaising closely with the industry on the Government's proposals for the new deal to get young people off benefit and into work. Tourism is extremely important in my constituency of Rossendale and Darwen. When my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister appointed me to this post, I was very encouraged when the Manchester Evening News visited one of my local tourist information centres in Rawtenstall and said what a wonderful service it provided. Other hon. Members raised important constituency matters. My hon. Friend the Member for Morecambe and Lunesdale (Miss Smith) rightly referred to the plight of many seaside resorts around the country. Our domestic tourism working group charged a quality sub-group with looking at that problem. It examined a resort regeneration

The dodgy dossier
Huh! Dodgy Dossier they call it! That is just so unfair! I put quite a lot of effort into that dossier, and I don't think it's dodgy at all! On the day the whole fiasco started I was called to a meeting by my boss, I tore myself away from a hectic game of Solitaire sauntered down the stairs, threw my hat on the coat stand outside his office, nodded to his personal assistant, knocked and went in. "Oh! Hello Perkins" he blustered, as I walked over his polar bear skin rug, and presented myself in the traditional stooped and submissive fashion at his old leather covered desk with the dodgy drawers. He spun round in his chair, and in his own special style which I've become a bit tired of lately, he stroked his pussy and said "hello Perkins, I've been expecting you". I've learned not to rise to it when he makes these jaded old jokes because when I say something out of line he always ends up getting his own back, sending me on a research mission to Afghanistan, or worst of all, making me buy a round of cakes for all the girls in the typing pool. They always taunt me so, and I come away from the "cake sessions" as they call them, with a hurt ego and bruised pride. I nodded sagely, and gesticulated toward his little side table in the corner of his office that is surrounded by a pair of ancient leather high backed chairs and a standard lamp which has a dim old bulb.

By James Cogan 4 May 2005 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author As far as all these groupings are concerned, de-Baathification is not a policy that can be put aside easily. Reflecting the ambitions of the Shiite bourgeoisie, they have sought to use the US occupation to supplant the long-established Sunni ruling elite, which has held the main positions of political power since Iraq was carved out of the Ottoman Empire after World War I. Daawa, SCIRI and Sistani have used all their influence to oppose any struggle by the Shiite masses against the US takeover of Iraq. To retain political support, they held out the prospect that a Shiite-led government would bring the Baathists to account for their numerous crimes against the Iraqi people and deliver democratic rights to the Shiite majority. In many respects, the initial stages of the US occupation proceeded along the lines anticipated by the Shiite establishment. Under conditions where the US military expected little resistance, the American-controlled authority in Iraq disbanded the Iraqi Army and appointed Chalabi to oversee a purge of tens of thousands of Baathists from the Iraqi government, security forces and civil service. Hundreds of leading members of the former regime and ruling class were imprisoned.

Story Tools PERSPECTIVE TIME.com's Hugh Sidey writes in a story on Bush the elder titled "He Had No Respect for Our Military Then":
"When President No. 43 tells President No. 41 not to worry, he's talking not only as one world leader to another but also as a son to a father. That simple request combines perhaps the most intimate and unusual mix of power and love that this nation has ever witnessed. 'It's my job to worry,' says George Bush the elder, with a chuckle. But his concern is not about the rightness of the cause in Iraq or the ability of the President to lead the country in this dangerous time. It is that of a father who sees his son on a lonely and difficult march and knows he may be the only other person on the planet who can completely understand what the President is going through...
"'It is the toughest decision a President has to make, to send the sons and daughters of Americans into harm's way,' George H.W. declares. He recalls that before he sent these 'wonderful young' troops into battle in Panama, the anxiety was terrible. 'The night before I could not move my neck or arms. The tension had taken hold, the responsibility for those lives, even though I had been in combat myself.'"

US puppet government announces state of siege in Baghdad
By Barry Grey 27 May 2005 Use this version to print Send this link by email Email the author The defense and security ministers of the US-backed Iraqi government on Thursday announced a massive police-military operation in Baghdad involving 40,000 Iraqi police and soldiers, backed by the 10,000 US troops stationed in the city. He said the lockdown of the capital would continue indefinitely and serve as a model for operations to be mounted throughout the country. Coming in response to an escalation of insurgent attacks over the past month, the measures announced Thursday amount to a reign of terror employing indiscriminate arrests and death squad violence. On the same day as the Baghdad press conference announcing the state of siege, the Washington Post Post openly acknowledged that state executions would be used as a political weapon in the effort to crush the insurgency against the US military occupation and its Quisling government.

What prospect for an electoral reform breakthrough?
We wanted to hold New Labour to account for the illegal invasion of Iraq. Seeing them returned with a reduced majority, what are the lessons for us from this election and where should we focus our attention next?
  • On 35.2 percent of the UK vote (down 5.5%) Labour got 55 pecent of the seats (356 out of 646). On 32.3 percent of the vote (up 0.6%) the Tories will have 30.6 percent of the seats (198). On 22 percent of the votes the LibDems get 9.6 percent of the seats (62). and of course the smaller parties get worse discrimination against them.
Like most pundits, our voteshare estimate exaggerated Labour's lead - but my small print warned that it would be smaller on the day. NOP got the voteshares more or less right, and YouGov were also pretty good. We were more accurate than either UK Elect or Martin Baxter in our estimate of the likely Labour majority. Our polling-derived voteshares generated a Labour majority of 80, but again I was estimating quite a bit less than that, so was disappointed that Blair's majority is 67 now, and effectively more like 71 because of the non-voting Sinn Fein MPs. It is hard to say if we made much difference at all. Probably a little influence on the zeitgiest regarding tactical voting, possibly a little influence in Shrewsbury and Atcham (helping the LibDems resist a Labour squeeze) and in Croydon Central.
