Last Night's Lecture Featured Three Professors Examining American Foreign Policy in Iraq

Columbia Spectator
February 12, 2004
http://www.columbiaspectator.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2004/02/12/402b44ee0030e The Faculty Peace Committee hosted a panel last night in which prominent Columbia professors looked at the future of Iraq, presenting different critiques of American policy in Iraq. The participants were all renowned professors in their fields: Rashid Khalidi, the Edward Said professor of Arabic studies and Literature; Charles Tilly, professor of sociology; and Nadia Urbinati, associate professor of political theory. The topic of the panel, which was held in Jerome Greene Hall, was "Nationalism, Fundamentalism, and the Future of Popular Protest". Following the speeches given by the professors, the floor was opened to questions from the audience. The forum, the first of three to be held over the next two weeks, follows a series from last semester which also was sponsored by the Faculty Peace Committee and was meant to address the repercussions of the Iraqi war.

Wednesday :: July 07, 2004 Iraq Government Authorizes Martial Law Well, that didn't take long. The new Iraqi Government has authorized Prime Minister Iyad Allawi to declare martial law. "The lives of the Iraqi people are in danger, they are in danger from evil forces, from gangs of terrorists," said Human Rights Minister Bakhityar Amin, who compared the new law to the U.S. Patriot Act. ....The laws give Allawi the right to impose curfews, to conduct search operations and detain individuals with weapons, once he receives unanimous approval from the Cabinet. It also gives him the right to assign governors, including military leaders, to be in charge of specific areas. Meanwhile, U.S. soldier deaths keep mounting. The U.S. military on Tuesday announced that three Marines assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force were killed while on duty in western Iraq. Two died in action Monday in Anbar province, while a third died of his wounds later Monday. Another four U.S.

Part One focusses on how Iraq's security organisations operate to conceal Weapons of Mass Destruction from UN Inspectors. It reveals that the inspectors are outnumbered by Iraqi intelligence by a ratio of 200 to 1. Part Two gives up to date details of Iraq's network of intelligence and security Part Three goes on to show the effects of the security apparatus on the ordinary people of Iraq.

Questions concerning the situation in Iraq and the June 30 turnover of sovereignty dominated a June 18 roundtable interview of Secretary of State Colin Powell, but the secretary also responded to queries on Uzbekistan and the Middle East peace process.
Powell met in Washington with reporters from five regional newspapers. Addressing the preparations for returning sovereignty to Iraq, Powell said he is "impressed by the way in which the interim Iraqi government has started to function even before they have received full sovereignty," and added that "everything we've seen so far suggests it [the turnover of sovereignty] will go smoothly." in Iraq The first thing you are told when you walk into an internet centre as a foreigner in Baghdad is - don't use your own e-mail account. Access to websites such as Hotmail is barred and trying to sneak into a personal e-mail account through any website is a challenge. For Iraqis, even censored internet access is better than none
All computers face away from the wall, and officials from the government's internet department pace up and down the room. If you are caught, panicked officials immediately shut down your computer. Censorship Introduced almost two years ago, the internet service in Iraq is heavily censored and e-mail access is only possible through the government provided service. But for Iraqis, even censored internet is better than none.

    The shadow Iraqi government
    By Pepe Escobar
The ideal White House/Pentagon script for Iraq calls for a pro-American government, total control of at least 12% of the world's known oil reserves and 14 military bases to make it happen. Reality has been churning up other ideas.
Whenever there is a so-called "transfer of power" in Mesopotamia, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, like clockwork, steps on a plane to Baghdad. On his latest trip designed to issue orders for the new, supposedly sovereign Iraqi government, Rumsfeld, in a splendid Freudian slip, let it be known on the record the US "does not have an exit strategy" in Iraq: only a "victory strategy". This is code for "we're not going anywhere".
Reality had intervened two days before Rumsfeld arrived, when about 300,000 Shi'ite nationalists occupied the same Firdaws Square of "liberation day", April 9, 2003, but this time with no Saddam-toppling photo-op intent. Their messages were clear: out with the occupation; and Bush equals Saddam Hussein.

11:30 A.M. EDT THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. Today in Baghdad, U.N. Special Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, and Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, announced the members of Iraq's new interim government. Consulting with hundreds of Iraqis from a variety of backgrounds, Mr. Brahimi has recommended a team that possesses the talent, commitment and resolve to guide Iraq through the challenges that lie ahead. On June 30th, this interim government will assume full sovereignty and will oversee all ministries and all functions of the Iraqi state. Those ministries will report to Prime Minister Allawi, who will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of Iraq's interim government. Dr. Allawi is a strong leader. He endured exile for decades and survived assassination attempts by Saddam's regime. He was trained as a physician, has worked as a businessman and has always been an Iraqi patriot. Prime Minister Allawi and Mr. Brahimi announced Iraq's interim President, Ghazi Al-Yawar, an engineer from northern Iraq. They also announced two deputy presidents, Dr. Ibrahim Jaafari, who is a physician born in Karbala; and Dr. Rowsch Shaways, a prominent political and military leader who also has been a long-time opponent of Saddam's tyranny.
