Iran warns U.S. to stay out of its airspace
From Kasra Naji CNN TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) Iran "will take action" against American warplanes that regularly violate its airspace in the event of a U.S. strike on neighboring Afghanistan, the country's defense minister said Monday. "Mistakes are mistakes," Rear Adm. Ali Shamkhani told reporters. "But if they are repeated, it means they are planned and we will take action." During the Persian Gulf war, Iran claims that U.S. planes and missiles repeatedly strayed into its airspace, but the country made no protests. Iran said on Sunday that it would not support any U.S. military operations, warning that a U.S. military buildup in the region could have unpredictable consequences. Shamkhani said Tehran objects to any military operation against Afghanistan, and Iranian armed forces were vigilant and were fully monitoring all military and political developments in the region. Postcard From Mashad Young Afghan-American Woman Found Iran Was "Therapy"
By Fariba Najab
Date : 06-04-97 MASHAD, IRAN For the first time in 15 years, Persian words sang in my ears. All around me, no one was speaking English. There were no signs for McDonald's or Coca-Cola. And no woman was "exposed." I was in the holy city of Mashad, Iran, the land of the "terrorists" and "fanatics," to see my grandparents, refugees from Afghanistan. After eight months in Cairo, where American pop-culture is omnipresent, I had braced myself for the changes I would have to face. On the plane, my blonde hair was covered with a scarf knotted under my throat, Iranian style. Although I wore jeans and a blazer, I had tucked a black robe in my backpack, ready to don it once I reached the airport. The elderly Iranian woman next to me, like the other women passengers, was wearing a long, dark coat. She was telling me how she planned to smuggle a Disney videotape through customs for her grandson. Suddenly, an Iranian man dressed in a cleric's turban and robe interrupted us. "Miss, are you thinking of departing the plane in those clothes?" he asked. I took out my cloak and showed it to him. He nodded his head and smiled.

Bid to halt Iran professor's death
Students protest a death sentence against scholar Hashem Aghajari. Story Tools
TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) The lawyer for an Iranian professor sentenced to death for insulting Islam and questioning clerical rule has filed an 11th hour appeal. Aghajari, a university professor, was condemned to hang last month for his outspoken remarks, which included his comments that believers in Islam should not blindly follow senior clerics "like monkeys." Aghajari's conviction and sentence have sparked the largest student protests in Iran in more than three years, with as many as 5,000 people participating in rallies and boycotts. The students, some of whom have been arrested, have called for freedom of speech and major political reform in the Islamic nation. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has threatened to unleash forces to break up the protests, but he has also called for a review of the case, saying a man's life is at stake. Word of the appeal came Monday, one day before the deadline set by the nation's judiciary.

LONDON, England (CNN) Britain says it has temporarily closed its embassy in Iran's capital after shots were fired at it from the street. The Foreign Office said no one was hurt in the shooting, which comes amid tension between the countries after a former Iranian diplomat was arrested in Britain over the 1994 bombing of a Jewish center in Argentina that killed 85. "Just before midday today local time, five shots were fired from the street at the British Embassy in Tehran," she said on Wednesday. "The bullets hit offices on the first and second floors of the building. Nobody was injured in the incident, but the embassy has been temporarily closed for business." The main building inside the embassy's one-block compound was hit by the gunfire which broke windows and caused damage, according to an embassy spokesman who was inside the building at the time of the shooting.

The turbulent and extreme domestic situation makes Iraq one of the least desirable places in the world to be. Even if you wanted to go, chances are you'd have trouble getting there; there are only a few infrequent commercial carriers running flights to Baghdad's International Airport and only journalists, business people and aid workers are being issued visas. The aftermath of war, severe food shortages, lawlessness and the lack of essential medicine throughout the country hamper the nation's chances of prosperity any time soon.

Iran tops Sharon's Moscow agenda
Sharon is concerned about nuclear ties between Russia and Iran. Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Follow the news that matters to you. Create your own alert to be notified on topics you're interested in. Or, visit Popular Alerts for suggestions. Manage alerts What is this? MOSCOW, Russia (AP) Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has arrived Sunday in Moscow for a summit with President Vladimir Putin expected to focus on Israeli concerns about Iran's nuclear program and a Russian-backed U.N. resolution on a Mideast peace plan. Israeli officials traveling with Sharon said the talks on Monday would also touch on proposals for improved intelligence sharing in the international fight against terrorism. Iran has pledged to open its nuclear program to unfettered inspections and to suspend uranium enrichment. But Israeli officials fear Iran is continuing to covertly acquire nuclear arms know-how, at least some of it from countries of the former Soviet Union, possibly including Russia. The head of Israeli military intelligence told a parliamentary committee last week that, if unchecked, Iran would have a self-sufficient nuclear weapons capability by next summer.
