Iran - History
Iran THE ISLAMIC REVOLUTION in 1979 brought a sudden end to the rule of the Pahlavi dynasty, which for fifty years had been identified with the attempt to modernize and Westernize Iran. The Revolution replaced the monarchy with an Islamic republic and a secular state with a quasi-theocracy. It brought new elites to power, altered the pattern of Iran's foreign relations, and led to the transfer of substantial wealth from private ownership to state control. There were continuities across the watershed of the Revolution, however; bureaucratic structure and behavior, attitudes toward authority and individual rights, and the arbitrary use of power remained much the same. In 1987, nearly a decade after the Revolution, it was still too early to determine whether the continuitiesalways striking over the long sweep of Iran's historyor the changes would prove the more permanent. The Revolution ended a pattern of monarchical rule that, until 1979, had been an almost uninterrupted feature of Iranian government for nearly 500 years. The tradition of monarchy itself is even older. In the sixth century B.C., Iran's first empire, the Achaemenid Empire, was already established. It had an absolute monarch, centralized rule, a highly developed system of administration, aspirations of world rule, and a culture that was uniquely Iranian even as it borrowed, absorbed, and transformed elements from other cultures and civilizations. Although Alexander the Great brought the Achaemenid Empire to an end in 330 B.C., under the Sassanids (A.D. 224-642) Iran once again became the center of an empire and a great civilization.

Archaeological evidence reveals a human presence on the Iranian plateau prior to 100 B.C; by Neolithic times the region was evidently well settled, developing early agriculture around 7000 B.C.
The first Iranian civilization, which arose some 2000 years later in lowland Khuzestan, was Elam. The plateau region remained largely Neolithic at this time and did not participate in the early civilizations of Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley. A powerful and long-lasting monarchy, Elam fought successively with Ur and Babylonia, before being finally extinguished by Assyria in the 7th century B.C.
Medes and Persia
While Elam dominated the Iranian lowlands, the Iranian plateau was settled about 1500 B.C. by Aryan tribes from Central Asia who spoke Indo-European tongues. One group, the Medes, settled in the north-west and founded the Kingdom of Media, at first an Assyrian vassal state.
  • Cyrus and his successors, Cambyses II and Darius I, conquered an empire reaching from Egypt and the Black Sea in the west to the Indus Valley in the east, with its capital at Persepolis. However, the defeats at Marathon in 490 B.C. and Salamis in 480 B.C. kept Greece from Persian rule. In the 4th century B.C. Alexander the Great struck back and added Persia to his empire. Succession struggles after his death in 323 B.C. were resolved by Seleucus I, first of the Seleucids, who seized Persia and Babylonia. Seleucid supremacy lasted unchallenged until around 250 B.C. when a Persian Scythian nomadic group invaded Parthia, establishing a new kingdom there. Recognized as independent by the Seleucid Antiochus III, the Parthians defeated his successor Antiochus IV in around 164 B.C. and united the eastern Seleucid provinces under their rule.

Persia or Iran A Brief History
Pre-Twentieth Century "History is a mirror of the past
And a lesson for the present."

(A Persian Proverb)
The country has always been known to its own people as Iran (land of the Aryans), although for centuries it was referred to as Persia (Pars or Fars, a province in southern Iran) by the Europeans, mainly due to the writings of Greek historians. In 1935 the Government specified that it should be called Iran; however, in 1949 they allowed both names to be used. Most people today, know Persia or Iran through its carpets, its caviar, its costly war with its neighbour Iraq, or through its importance as one of the world's major oil-producing nations. Yet, Persia has one of the richest and oldest cultures in the world. For more than three thousand years Persia was a melting pot of civilizations and demographic movements between Asia and Europe. Under Cyrus the Great, it became the centre of the world's first empire. Successive invasions by the Greeks, Arabs, Mongols and Turks developed the nation's culture through rich and diverse philosophical, artistic, scientific and religious influences. Persia's first vigorous growth began in the Neolithic era, and by the third millennium B.C. it had developed into a civilization of great sophistication. The infiltration of the Aryan peoples into Iran during the second millennium B.C. paved that way for the Achaemenian dynasty, whose achievements were gloriously represented in the great palaces of

Iran, History
Arab Muslim armies began their conquest of the Persian Sassanian Empire in ad 636 and during the next five years conquered all of Iran, with the exception of the Elburz Mountains and the Caspian coastal plain. They finally put an end to the Sassanid dynasty in 651. For the next two centuries, most of Iran (which at that time extended beyond Herat in what now is western Afghanistan) remained part of the Arab Islamic empire. The caliphs (successive Islamic leaders) ruled initially from Medina in present-day Saudi Arabia, then from Damascus, Syria, and finally from Baghdad, Iraq, as each city became the seat of the caliphate. Beginning in the late 9th century, however, independent kingdoms arose in eastern Iran; by the mid-11th century, the Arab caliph in Baghdad had lost effective control of virtually all of Iran, although most of the local dynasties continued to recognize his religious authority. From the time of Islamic conquest, Iranians gradually converted to Islam. Most had previously followed Zoroastrianism, the official state religion under the Sassanid dynasty, but minority groups had practiced Christianity or Judaism. By the 10th century the majority of Iranians probably were Muslims. Most Iranian Muslims adhered to orthodox Sunni Islam, although some followed various sects of Shia Islam. The Ismailis, a Shia sect, maintained a small but effectively independent state in the Rudbar region of the Elburz Mountains from the 11th through the 13th century. Iran's unique identity as a bastion of Jafari, or Twelver, Shia Islam (which constitutes the main body of Shia Islam today) did not develop until the 16th century.

http://wais.stanford.edu/Iran/iranandislam.htm
Iran and Islam I posted a report by Nushin Namazi claiming that Islam was invented in Arabia by an Iranian exile Salman Pak, who used Mohammed as the spokesman .This story would infuriate pious Muslims. I have searched for Salman Pak, and I came up with a mass of article about a terrorist training camp in Iraq named after him. There was no reference to the historical figure, but he must be a hero among Arabs, although not the inventor of Islam. I asked Nushin where she got the story, and she replied "Foulavand, an Iranian Scholar". I cannot find him, and In do not have the six-volume Cambridge History of Iran, so I asked Nushin to identify him. Her answer will be the next posting, In any case, this version of history must be circulating, presumably among Iranian anti-Muslim nationalists. Nushin sends a long quotation in English translation. From it I extract the relevant section: Fourteen centuries ago, an old Persian revolutionary prince who used different names "MAYAA" "BEHBOOD" "NAAJAA" "BORZOOYEH""BAKH-SHOODAAN""EBEN KHOSHNOODAAN" "ROOZBEH" OR SALMAAN EL FARSI, rose up to overthrow the Sassanian Dynasty and get the crown of his motherland. He prepared a blood- thirsty army of barbarous Arabs from the dry deserts and trained them to achieve two aims: Get the Paradise of the Earth (Iran) or kill and die for the paradise of heaven. For the last 14 centuries, there has been a nonstop and bloody war between the swords of Arabs ideology and Persia's brilliant culture. During the 20th century, our culture was going to defeat the Arabs' bloody ideology and get rid of it all over the land of Iran, realm of culture and civilization. Unfortunately, 14 centuries after the Arab invasion, once more the bloody idea of barbarians defeated our kingdom of culture and human rights with western countries' support and put our nation under the sword of Allah's laws again.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Tehran - History E Who wrote the artic le is not known; it could have been Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi himself, or someone under his instructions. Toward the end of 1977, the paper passed under the sombre and thoughtful eyes of the minister of court, Amir Abbas Hoveyda. He no doubt reflected o n the consequences were the paper to be published. As the first glimmer of dawn lit the misty horizon on the morning of August25, 1941, the HMS Shoreham trained her forward gun battery on the Iranian warship Palang, which was moored peacefully at an Abadan pier. A moment later, a shell slammed into the Palang, the explosion engulfing the vessel in a ball of fire and smoke. As the listing warship settled into the river mud, British and Soviet armies stormed across Iran's borders-commencing perhaps the most dramatic and controversial untold episode of World War II. Attacked without provocation, neutral Iran suffered her own "Pearl Harbor" three months prior to the United States' more famous Day of Infamy. Iran's army was crushed, her monarch was overthrown, the beleaguered Red Army was saved from defeat, a German conquest of the Persian Gulf oil fields was thwarted, and the conditions were created for the opening showdown of the Cold War... Few incidents of World War II relate more directly to the current crisis in the Persian Gulf than those described in this book. Sunrise at Abadan explains how more by accident than design the Anglo-Soviet invasion drew the United States deeply and inextricably into the affairs of Iran.

Jump to the Documents The CIA history of operation TPAJAX excerpted below was first disclosed by James Risen of The New York Times in its editions of April 16 and June 18, 2000, and posted in this form on its website at: http://www.nytimes.com/library/world/mideast/041600iran-cia-index.html This extremely important document is one of the last major pieces of the puzzle explaining American and British roles in the August 1953 coup against Iranian Premier Mohammad Mossadeq. Written in March 1954 by Donald Wilber, one of the operation’s chief planners, the 200-page document is essentially an after-action report, apparently based in part on agency cable traffic and Wilber’s interviews with agents who had been on the ground in Iran as the operation lurched to its conclusion. Long-sought by historians, the Wilber history is all the more valuable because it is one of the relatively few documents that still exists after an unknown quantity of materials was destroyed by CIA operatives – reportedly “routinely” – in the 1960s, according to former CIA Director James Woolsey. However, according to an investigation by the National Archives and Records Administration, released in March 2000, “no schedules in effect during the period 1959-1963 provided for the disposal of records related to covert actions and, therefore, the destruction of records related to Iran was unauthorized.” (p. 22) The CIA now says that about 1,000 pages of documentation remain locked in agency vaults.
