The first distinct people to emerge on the Iranian plateau were probably the Elamites, who established a city at Shush in the far south-west. The Aryans came to the region in the second millennium BC, bringing with them some agricultural and domestic skills. It wasn't until the middle of the 6th century BC, when the Achaemenian king Cyrus the Great ruled the region, that Persian history was documented. The Achaemenian Dynasty is recognised as the founder of the Persian Empire, leading to the eventual creation of Iran. In the 4th century BC Alexander the Great invaded Persia after conquering most of Greece, Egypt, Turkey and Iraq. Despite three conciliatory offers from Darius III for a negotiated peace, Alexander entered Shush. From there, he took some time to cross the mountains to the east, but eventually entered Persepolis. After Alexander's death in 323 BC, the empire was divided into three squabbling dynasties, with Persia controlled by the Macedonian Seleucids. But the Seleucids had problems controlling the numerous feisty ethnic minorities, in particular the nomadic Parthians who came to control most of Persia until the 3rd century AD. The Sassanians came from the central regions of Persia not under direct control of the Parthians. They were an industrious Zoroastrian gang who promoted urban development and encouraged trade, but who eventually set to squabbling and were overrun by the Arabs in 637.

LESSON PLAN:IRAN IN 2004
By Lara Maupin, former social studies teacher and student government adviser at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Virginia Subjects: comparative government, world cultures, world religions class or current events Estimated time of completion: This lesson is intended to take two class periods. Lesson Objectives:
  • Students will understand historical, political, and societal roots of political instability in Iran as well as implications of such tensions. In this lesson, your students will examine the historical, political, and societal causes of the tension between reformers and conservatives in Iran as well as other current issues such as whether or not Iran is likely to become a nuclear power. This lesson is especially relevant in a comparative government, world cultures, or world religions class but may be used in any social studies class in which current events are discussed. Materials:
  • Students will need the HANDOUT as well as copies of the articles cited below or computers with Internet access. No special textbooks or materials are required, although sources containing information about Iran may certainly be useful.

The Sassanians On.ly in the 2nd century AD did the Parthian rule begin to wane. The Parthian dynasty fell, not to external assault from Rome or the East, but as a result of a national uprising in Pars, the cradle of Iranian civilization, the home of the Achaemenians, the province least touched Greek colonization. Pawere replaced (c 226 AD) by the more vigorous Sassanian dynasty, when Ardashir (Artaxerxes) I ousted and killed the last Parthian ruler and built a new empire out of the ruins of Parthian and Seleucidpower. The Sassanians were the true heirs of the Achaemenians.
In four centuries of Sassanian rule there were two periods of glory. In the first, which lasted into the fifth century, the outstanding kings (remarkable for their longevity) were Arrlashir I (226-255), Shapur I (255-271 ), and captor of Valerian, Shapur II (309-379) conqueror of Armenia and persecutor of Christians, and Bahram V, or Bahram-e Gur(421-438),famousin history and legend for his hunting exploits. In the second period, the great figures were Khosrow I (531-579), perhaps the most illustrious of all the Sassanian kings, and Khosrow Parviz (590-628), conqueror of Jerusalem, invader of Egypt glorified in legend for his amours but in fact brutal, cowardly and fairly incompetent.

The scientific excavation and study of the ancient caves and mounds of Iran by archaeologists has placed at the disposal of scholars a great deal of information about man's past. The oldest artifact which has so far come to light on the Iranian plateau from the prehistoric period is a stone hand - axe found near Kermanshah which is approximately 100,000 years old. The Seyalk Culture The Seyalk Culture
Artifacts of this culture were found for the first time in Seyalk Hills near Kashan, and thus the culture was called by this name. The deepest level of excavation of this hill brought to light relics and remains of elementary agricultural societies on the Iranian plateau. The deep levels of Cheshma - ye Ali hill have also revealed remains from this culture. The approximate date of the Seyalk Culture is the beginning of the fifth millenium B.C.

Iran, History, Land and People The Aryans About 6,500 Years ago, successive waves of people were migrating into a land which is now called Iran and northern Iraq. They called themselves the black-headed (dark- haired) people. We know them as the Aryan/Sumerian, ancestors of Iranians and the land in which they settled as the land of Sumer (Iran Plateau) The Aryans/Sumerians established the first recognizable civilization with a workable system of government. Their other achievements include the invention of WHEELED VEHICLES and the use of written language. The ancient Iranians developed the scientific practice of agriculture; on the arts side, a distinctive style of architecture and a complex religion which is reflected in their literature. Summer lasted well over 1,000 years before it fell to Semite warrior people from the north, the AKKADIANS, and even then Sumerian culture continued to dominate the new empire. Many legends surround the person of the Akkadian leader, Sargon I (2637-2582 BC.). He was once cup-bearer to the king of Kish. The legend goes that he was found as a baby floating on the river in a basket made of reeds. AKKAD TAKES OVER ARYANS About 1,000 years after civilization began in Sailk and Sumer Saragon of Akkad conquered the Sumerians various states and founded the Akkadian empire which lasted for about 200 years (2371-2159 BC.). Sargon's first triumph was to make himself king of the city of Akkad. The city of Kish was added to his domain. Later, he conquered many other cities and stretched his kingdom chain to reach as far as Nipour.

    History of Iran
The ancient nation of Iran was historically known to the West as Persia until March 21,1935 . Once a major empire in its own right, it has been overrun frequently and has had its territory altered throughout the centuries. Invaded by Arabs,Seljuk,Turks,Mongols, and othersand often caught up in the affairs of larger powersIran has always reasserted its national identity and has developed as a distinct political and cultural entity.
Archeological findings have placed knowledge of Iranian prehistory at middle paleolithic times (100,000 years ago). The earliest sedentary cultures date from 18,000-14,000 years ago. The sixth millennium BC saw a fairly sophisticated agricultural society and proto-urban population centers. Many dynasties have ruled Iran, the first of which was under the Achaemenids (559 - 330 BC), a dynasty founded by Cyrus the great. After the Hellenistic period (300 - 250 BC) came the Parthian (250 BC - AD 226 ) and the Sassanid (226 - 651) dynasties.
The seventh century Arab-Muslim conquest of Iran was followed by conquests by the Seljuk Turks, the Mongols, and Tamerlane . Iran underwent a revival under the Safavid (1502-1736), the most prominent figure of which was Shah Abbas. The conqueror Nadir Shah and his successors were followed by the Zand dynasty, founded by Karim Kahn, and later the Qajar (1795-1925) and the Pahlavi dynasties (1925-1979).
