Iran has a long and rich history. For a detailed description of the Persian Empire, see Persia . Some of the world's most ancient settlements have been excavated in the Caspian region and on the Iranian plateau; village life began there c.4000 B.C. The Aryans came about 2000 B.C. and split into two main groups, the Medes and the Persians. The Persian Empire founded (c.550 B.C. ) by Cyrus the Great was succeeded, after a period of Greek and Parthian rule, by the Sassanid in the early 3d cent. A.D. Their control was weakened when Arab invaders took (636) the capital, Ctesiphon; it ended when the Arabs defeated the Sassanid armies at Nahavand in 641. With the invasion of Persia the Arabs brought Islam. The Turks began invading in the 10th cent. and soon established several Turkish states. The Turks were followed by the Mongols, led by Jenghiz Khan in the 13th cent. and Timur in the late 14th cent. Ismail , restored internal order in Iran and established the Shiite Abbas I (Abbas the Great). He drove out the Portuguese, who had established colonies on the Persian Gulf early in the 16th cent. Shah Abbas also established trade relations with Great Britain and reorganized the army. Religious differences led to frequent wars with the Ottoman Turks, whose interest in Iran was to continue well into the 20th cent.

[Upload image] Persia or contemporary Iran has very long and rich history. Until 1979 there had been a monarchy rule, an almost uninterrupted feature of Iranian government for nearly 500 years. The tradition of monarchy itself is even older. In the sixth century B.C. Iran's first empire the Achaemenid Empire was already established. It had an absolute monarch centralized rule a highly developed system of administration aspirations of world rule and a culture that was uniquely Persian even as it borrowed absorbed and transformed elements from other cultures and civilizations. Although Alexander the Great brought the Achaemenid Empire to an end in 330 B.C. under the Sassanids (A.D. 224-642) Iran once again became the center of an empire and a great civilization.

Country Info Iran Introduction Iran General Data Iran Maps Iran Culture ... Iran Time and Date Iran History Back to Top The Islamic revolution in 1979 brought a sudden end to the rule of the Pahlavi dynasty, which for fifty years had been identified with the attempt to modernize and Westernize Iran. The Revolution replaced the monarchy with an Islamic republic and a secular state with a quasi-theocracy. It brought new elites to power, altered the pattern of Iran's foreign relations, and led to the transfer of substantial wealth from private ownership to state control. There were continuities across the watershed of the Revolution, however; bureaucratic structure and behavior, attitudes toward authority and individual rights, and the arbitrary use of power remained much the same. In 1987, nearly a decade after the Revolution, it was still too early to determine whether the continuitiesalways striking over the long sweep of Iran's historyor the changes would prove the more permanent. Such explosions of unrest as occurred during the 1951-53 oil nationalization crisis and the 1963 riots during the Muslim month of Moharram, suggested that there were major unresolved tensions in Iranian society, however. These stemmed from inequities in wealth distribution; the concentration of power in the hands of the crown and bureaucratic, military, and entrepreneurial elites; the demands for political participation by a growing middle class and members of upwardly mobile lower classes; a belief that Westernization posed a threat to Iran's national and Islamic identity; and a growing polarization between the religious classes and the state.

History Ayatollah Khomeini returned to Iran in triumph, and in doing so he effectively ensured that the Islamic clergy would prevail over secular elements in establishing the new order in Iran. Over the next two years, secular opponents of the Shah were steadily displaced as the Islamic clergy asserted total political control. The global resurgence of Islam since then owes much to the Iranian revolution: Muslims throughout Asia and North Africa were inspired by the example of Iran and most countries with a significant Muslim population have experienced some political turbulence, in many cases affecting significant change as a result. The reaction in the West was almost uniformly hostile, and focused on the occupation of the US embassy in Tehran in 1979 as a Majlis

Kurds :
  • Kurds , a non-Arab Middle Eastern minority population that inhabits the region known as Kurdistan, an extensive plateau and mountain area in SW Asia (c.74,000 sq mi/191,660 sq km), including parts of E Turkey, NE Iraq, and NW Iran and smaller sections of NE Syria and Armenia. The region lies astride the Zagros Mts. (Iran) and the eastern extension of the Taurus Mts. (Turkey) and extends in the south across the Mesopotamian plain and includes the upper reaches of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
As of the late 1990s, there were estimated to be more than 20 million Kurds, about half of them in Turkey, where, making up more than 20% of the population, they dwell near the Iranian frontier around Lake Van, as well as in the vicinity of Diyarbakir and Erzurum. The Kurds in Iran, who constitute some 10% of its people, live principally in Azerbaijan and Khorasan, with some in Fars. The Iraqi Kurds, about 23% of its population, live mostly in the vicinity of Dahuk (Dohuk), Mosul, Erbil, Kirkuk, and Sulaimaniyah. Ethnically close to the Iranians, the Kurds were traditionally nomadic herders but are now mostly seminomadic or sedentary. The majority of Kurds are devout Sunni Muslims. Kurdish dialects belong to the northwestern branch of the Iranian languages. The Kurds have traditionally resisted subjugation by other nations. Despite their lack of political unity throughout history, the Kurds, as individuals and in small groups, have had a lasting impact on developments in SW Asia. Saladin, who gained fame during the Crusades, is perhaps the most famous of all Kurds.

People of Iran Iran's population is made up of numerous ethnic groups, the Persian being the largest. Persians had migrated to Iran from Central Asia in the beginning of 7th century BC. They include such groups as the Gilaki, who live in Gilan Province, and the Mazandarani, who live in Mazandaran Province. Accounting for about 60 percent of the total population, Persians live in cities throughout the country, as well as in the villages of central and eastern Iran. The official language of Iran is Modern Persian. Arts, Culture and Music of Iran Iran's rich musical tradition is marked by unique vocal styles and rich solo instrumental performance. After he revolution in 1979 there has been a major revival of interest in Iranian traditional and folk music. Traditional musical instruments include the kamánche or spiked fiddle; the santur, a stringed instrument similar to the hammer dulcimer; the setar, which resembles a lute; and the tar, an ancestor of the guitar. Many Iranian musicians have acquired international reputations as virtuoso performers of these instruments. Flag of Iran The flag of Iran has three equal horizontal bands of green at the top, then white, and then red. The national emblem (a stylized representation of the word Allah in the shape of a tulip, a symbol of martyrdom) in red is placed in the center of the white band. ALLAH AKBAR (God is Great) in white Arabic script is repeated 11 times along the bottom edge of the green band and 11 times along the top edge of the red band.

Main article: History of Iran Persia emerged in the 6th century BC under the Achaemenid dynasty as a vast empire that controlled an area from India to Greece . It was conquered by Alexander the Great , but soon after Persia regained its independence in the form of the Parthian and Sassanid Empires. The latter was defeated by Islamic Arab forces in the 7th century AD, who were followed by Seljuk Turks , the Mongols , and Tamerlane The 16th century saw renewed independence with the Safavids and then other lines of kings or shahs . During the 19th century Persia came under pressure from both Russia and the United Kingdom and a process of modernisation began that continued into the 20th century . In 1953 , Iran's socialist prime minister Mohammed Mossadeq , who had been elected to parliament in 1923 and again in 1944 , and who had been prime minister since 1951 , was removed from power in a complex plot orchestrated by British and US intelligence agencies("Operation Ajax "). The impact of the Islamic conquest in the seventh century was profound. It introduced a new religion and a new social and legal system. The Iranian heartland became part of a world empire whose center was not in Iran. Nevertheless, historians have found striking continuities in Iranian social structure, administration, and culture. Iranians contributed significantly to all aspects of Islamic civilization; in many ways they helped shape the new order. By the ninth century, there was a revival of the Persian (Farsi) language and of a literature that was uniquely Iranian but was enriched by Arabic and Islamic influences.
The breakup of the Islamic empire led, in Iran as in other parts of the Islamic world, to the establishment of local dynasties. Iran, like the rest of the Middle East, was affected by the rise to power of the Seljuk Turks and then by the destruction wrought first by the Mongols and then by Timur, also called Tamerlane (Timur the Lame). IRAN , which takes its name from the Aryans , an Indo European nomadic people who migrated to his area in the second millennium B.C it were called Persia as the Greek used to call it . The excavation shows the existence of civilization dating from 8000 B.C and earlier. Later civilization such as the Acadians , the Urartians in north - western Iran , and the Elamites in southeast of Iran have left the wonderful traces of their cities
The history of Iran started properly by the Mede at least the eight-century B.C they were Indo-Europeans. Cyrus the Great established new empire in 550 B.C , made Pasargade , Babylonia , Ecbatana , as his capitals. He offered freedom to Jews captured in Babylonia and ordered to rebuild their Temple. The dynasty of Cyrus and Darius was called Achaemenid. They were defeated in 331-30 B.C by Alexander , who burnt Persepolis , married with the daughter of Darius III , and died few years later. His vast empire was divided between his generals , Greek settlement in Iran was soon challenged by the Arsacide Parthians , an Iranian people from north -east in 238.B.C.During 500 years of power , the parthians had to face with Romans-the Sagas-from Chinese and Turkmenistan in the east. At this time Pahlavi became the official language of the empire.

    History of Iran
The first distinct people to emerge on the Iranian plateau were probably the Elamites, who established a city at Shush in the far south-west. The Aryans came to the region in the second millennium BC, bringing with them some agricultural and domestic skills. It wasn't until the middle of the 6th century BC, when the Achaemenian king Cyrus the Great ruled the region, that Persian history was documented. The Achaemenian Dynasty is recognised as the founder of the Persian Empire, leading to the eventual creation of Iran. In the 4th century BC Alexander the Great invaded Persia after conquering most of Greece, Egypt, Turkey and Iraq. Despite three conciliatory offers from Darius III for a negotiated peace, Alexander entered Shush. From there, he took some time to cross the mountains to the east, but eventually entered Persepolis. After Alexander's death in 323 BC, the empire was divided into three squabbling dynasties, with Persia controlled by the Macedonian Seleucids. But the Seleucids had problems controlling the numerous feisty ethnic minorities, in particular the nomadic Parthians who came to control most of Persia until the 3rd century AD. The Sassanians came from the central regions of Persia not under direct control of the Parthians. They were an industrious Zoroastrian gang who promoted urban development and encouraged trade, but who eventually set to squabbling and were overrun by the Arabs in 637.
