Chapter 8: The Shah of Iran, from enmity to appreciation
I was hardly eleven years old when the name 'Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa' attracted my attention for the first time. At the time, Bahrain was at the end of a period of its history, that witnessed claims by the late Shah, Mohamed Reza Pahlavi, that it was a dependency of Iran. As a youngster, I was not at all aware of the implications, nor the extent of the negotiations and the give-and-take between Bahrain and Iran. However, I was deeply wounded by the threats some of my playmates in the neighbourhood made to each other, including myself at times, although quite unaware of their implications. They used to say that the Shah was coming; that his armies would invade us; that they would take over our homes and send us into exile. In fact, there were lots of other threats the boys repeated, without quite understanding their meaning or implications. I remember that I lived in that state of inexplicable terror for quite a long time. What made things worse for me was that I could not reveal my fears to anyone, nor glean information from anyone on the true essence of the matter. One day, however, I was surprised to see signs of relief and delight on the faces of all those at home and in the neighbourhood and actually throughout the country. As I happened to overhear some of the talk and debates of adults around me, I realized that some new developments had taken place, which banished all the fears my playmates had inculcated in me. I dared to inquire about the news and received a soothing response which emphasized that, "Khalifa bin Salman stood up against them, re-affirming Bahrain's Arab identity and its independence from Iran. He extracted an official recognition from them, concerning this fact ".

He stopped short of saying whether the Iranian government is directly involved in the arms transfers, which Washington says add to the instability in Iraq. The charges come despite recent progress by Iran and the Shi'a-led Iraqi government to forge closer ties, including Iranian aid for building a new airport and an offer to help train Iraqi troops.

Ask the Iranian Government. Our post about Iranian censorship on the internet has created lots of discussion and comment. Later on Thursday in Geneva, Iran's President Mr Mohammad Khatami is scheduled to give a news conference. We'll be there on the front row so please, use the comments box and send us the questions YOU would like us to put to him. TrackBack Comments (64) please ask president khatami : you won 2 elections by youth generation votes , you promised a lot and done a few , you never stood against the hardliners and conservatives , which one is the priority for you ? people who voted for you and wanting the reform or saving the regime ? reza @ December 11, 2003 12:54 PM Please ask him who is responsible for censorship in Iran? The answer would be Persian Telecom. Then ask him is it the freedom of speech that you promised when you were running for election or was it just another fake to show a good face of Islam and the regime? Censoring somebody's ideas is worse than killing him. Why do you do it?
