Islamic laws have intruded in all aspects of life in Iran. All public functions are now designed, based and enforced by Islamic law.
Iranian Society has been segregated based on sexual apartheid. Men and women are segregated in public space and women are treated as second-class citizen in all manners of life.
Schools in Iran and the education system have been redefined and any subject not compatible with Islamic definitions has been eradicated.
Women have been forced to veil.
Marriage has to follow Islamic codes of conduct. Any voluntary sexual relationship outside marriage is punishable by flogging, imprisonment and by stoning to death.
Over the last twenty three years in Iran, any criticism of religion or any policies handed down by the representatives of god on earth has been treated with the harshest response under the laws of blasphemy and critics silenced by imprisonment and death.

Iran Government and Politics THE IRANIAN ISLAMIC REVOLUTION of 1979 resulted in the replacement of the monarchy by the Islamic Republic of Iran. The inspiration for the new government came from Ayatollah Sayyid Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini, who first began formulating his concept of an Islamic government in the early 1970s, while in exile in the Shia Islam learning and pilgrimage center of An Najaf in Iraq. Khomeini's principal objective was that government should be entrusted to Islamic clergy (see Glossary) who had been appropriately trained in Islamic theology and jurisprudence. He referred to this ideal government as a velayat-e faqih, or the guardianship of the religious jurist. Khomeini did not, however, elaborate concrete ideas about the institutions and functions of this ideal Islamic government. The translation of his ideas into a structure of interrelated governmental institutions was undertaken by the special Assembly of Experts, which drafted the Constitution of the Islamic Republic during the summer and fall of 1979. Subsequently, this Constitution was ratified by popular vote in December 1979. The political institutions established under the Constitution have been in the process of consolidation since 1980. These institutions have withstood serious challenges, such as the impeachment and removal from office of the first elected president and the assassination of the second one; the assassination of a prime minister, several members of the cabinet, and deputies of the parliament, or Majlis (see Glossary); an effort to overthrow the government by armed opposition; and a major foreign war. By 1987 the constitutional government's demonstrated ability to survive these numerous crises inspired confidence among the political elite.

A 'great venture':
overthrowing the government of Iran
by Mark Curtis From Lobster 30 This is a slightly abridged version of part of chapter four of Mark Curtis's book The Ambiguities of Power: British Foreign Policy since 1945 (Zed Press, 1995). In August 1953 a coup overthrew Iran's nationalist government of Mohammed Musaddiq and installed the Shah in power. The Shah subsequently used widespread repression and torture in a dictatorship that lasted until the 1979 Islamic revolution. The 1953 coup is conventionally regarded primarily as a CIA operation, yet the planning record reveals not only that Britain was the prime mover in the initial project to overthrow the government but also that British resources contributed significantly to the eventual success of the operation. Two first-hand accounts of the Anglo-American sponsorship of the coup - by the MI6 and CIA officers primarily responsible for it - are useful in reconstructing events. Many of the secret planning documents that reveal the British role have been removed from public access and some of them remain closed until the next century - for reasons of 'national security'. Nevertheless, a fairly clear picture still emerges. Churchill later told the CIA officer responsible for the operation that he 'would have loved nothing better than to have served under your command in this great venture'. In the 1950s the Anglo Iranian Oil Company (AIOC) - later renamed British Petroleum - which was managed from London and owned by the British government and British private citizens, controlled Iran's main source of income: oil. According to one British official, the AIOC 'has become in effect an

Sources: U.S. sought a government dialogue with Iran
Khatami's comments viewed as 'yes' reply
January 9, 1998 Web posted at: 1:57 p.m. EST (1857 GMT) From State Department Correspondent Steve Hurst WASHINGTON (CNN) The Clinton administration recently sought to open a government-to-government dialogue with Iran , sources said, sending a secret letter to Iranian President Mohammad Khatami through diplomatic channels in the second week of August. Speaking on condition of anonymity, the sources said Iran did not reply through those same channels, but U.S. officials viewed Khatami's moderate statements about respect for the American people, made last month and again in a CNN interview this week, as the answer to the U.S. overture. Washington severed ties with Tehran after radicals there took 52 Americans hostage in 1979, holding them for 444 days. The letter to Iran, sources said, contained no provisos and simply asked the Iranians if they were ready to conduct talks with the United States. The sources said such a letter would have been signed by U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. It was written, they said, after a long administration debate in which one camp argued that Washington should wait for Iran to make the first approach.

Government Must Investigate Killings and Release Detained Activists
(New York, August 11, 2005) - The Iranian government must investigate the deaths of at least 17 people at the hands of security forces in the western province of Kurdistan over the past two weeks, Human Rights Watch said today. The Iranian government needs to conduct a full and impartial investigation into the violent response to the recent protests in Kurdistan. Officials who are responsible for any excessive use of lethal force must be prosecuted.

Iran criticizes U.S. attacks, backs Afghan coalition government
TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) Iran's foreign minister sharply criticized the U.S.-led military operation in Afghanistan on Saturday but said his nation backed a "broad-based, representative government" in its troubled neighbor. Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi's comments followed a meeting in Tehran with his Greek counterpart, George Papandreou. Papandreou's visit to Tehran culminated his three-day tour of Central Asia, where he was the latest in a string of European diplomats trying to bolster regional support for the U.S-led coalition against terrorism. Unrest in Iran July 16, 1999 Web posted at: 8:09 p.m. EDT (0009 GMT) In this story: Clinton policies under fire Disagreement over opposition group Thousands protest in Los Angeles RELATED STORIES, SITES From staff and wire reports WASHINGTON (CNN) A week of demonstrations in Iran spilled over to the United States Friday, as thousands of protesters turned out in Washington to show their support for pro- democracy forces in Tehran. The Clinton administration has had little to say about the Iranian protests, which began July 9 after hard-line conservatives who control many branches of government banned a moderate newspaper popular among university students. The Washington rally, organized by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCR), included speeches from members of Congress opposing U.S. support for the moderate forces of President Mohammad Khatami.
