depicting Nobles at Ceremonies
From the dawn of history, Persia has been a distinct and important cultural entity. Its position as a vast natural fortress, with mountain ranges, enabled the Persians to preserve their individuality inspite of the conquests by the Arabs (7 th century), the Turks (10 th century), and the Mongols (13 th to 15 th centuries). Today, Iran remains a country rich in traditions, with a culture which has had great influence on other countries, both in Central Asia, and throughout the world. "Human beings are all members of one body.
They are created from the same essence.
When one member is in pain,
The others cannot rest.
If you do not care about the pain of others,
You do not deserve to be called a human being."

Society and Culture in Qajar Iran
Studies in Honor of Hafez Farmayan Edited by Elton L. Daniel The Qajar period of Iranian history (1797-1925) is being reinterpreted by historians of modern Iran. Once considered as a time of static backwardness, the period is now more often recognized as an age of dynamic political and social change. Beginning with a brilliant renaissance of literature and arts early in the nineteenth century, Qajar Iran not only was able to hold its independence during the awesome age of Western imperialism, it also managed to transform its traditional tribal society into a modern Iranian nation state. Hafez Farmayan, a pioneer in the scholarly study of Qajar Iran, was among the first historians to draw attention to the significant social and cultural change taking place during the Qajar period and often under Qajar patronage. This volume of essays by his students, colleagues, and friends attempts to further expand this understanding of Qajar history. After examining the circumstances which led to the establishment of the dynasty, they explore the innovations which took place in education and the arts as well as the changing status of women and the significant trends among the leading intellectual figures of the period. Travel, both by Iranians abroad and foreigners to Iran, played a key role in reshaping Iranian perceptions of neighboring countries and more distant ones. A number of essays explore this theme by surveying the burgeoning travel literature during the Qajar era; travel by Iranians to the Middle East, Europe, the United States and Japan; and travel by Russians and the British to Iran. They show, in ways that should be of interest to scholars interested in the general phenomenon of “transculturation” in the age of imperialism as well as to Iran specialists, how travel to and from Qajar Iran contributed significantly to changing material conditions, social values, and intellectual perspectives.

Building Ties With Pakistan
Rashid Ahmad
Ties between Pakistan and Iran are deeply rooted in history and have had a strong influence on all aspects of the daily lives of the people of the two countries. The impacts of the centuries old ties are evident in the religion, language, culture, architecture, literature and music of the two countries.
In an interview with Iran Daily, the Press, Education and Cultural Counselor of Pakistan Embassy in Tehran, Rashid Ahmad, spoke about the range of common cultural affinities between Iran and Pakistan. Persian and Urdu scripts are virtually identical, the music is very similar, poetic themes are common and the perspective on culture and art is the same. The people of Pakistan and Iran have a common vision and a promising future, said the Pakistani diplomat.
Excerpts of the interview:
IRAN DAILY: How do you see the bilateral arrangement between Islamic republics of Iran and Pakistan in the cultural and education fields?
AHMAD: Pakistan and Iran share a common cultural heritage. The bonds of similarities between the two countries derive their strength from frequent interaction at the people to people and government to government level. Iran was the first country to extend recognition to the new state of Pakistan in August, 1947. From that day till now, there has been no looking back on the development of relations between the two neighboring countries. This is but natural given the many commonalities that the peoples of the two countries share.

"Jaafari, a senior officer in the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), told a hard-line weekly close to Iran's ultra-conservative President-elect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that the new 'Lovers of Martyrdom Garrison' (Gharargahe Asheghane Shahadat, in Persian) would recruit individuals willing to carry out suicide operations against Western targets.

UNESCO/Japan Funds-in-Trust project: "Conservation of Chogha Zanbil"
Chogha Zanbil site © D. Kiani, J. Sepehr, Chogha Zanbil Project Archive The site of Chogha Zanbil and its conservation challenges: Chogha Zanbil, the great Elamite holy city, is situated in southwest Iran, about 40km southeast of the ancient city of Susa and north of Ahwaz. Originally known as Dur Untash, Chogha Zanbil was founded in the 13 th century B.C. by King Untash Napirisa, but it was abandoned after the king’s death. Only some priests continued to live there until its destruction in 640 B.C. by the Assyrians. The site consists of the ruins of three concentric walls enclosing palaces, temples, chapels and a large Ziggurat, a tower which originally was 53m high and of which two out of five floors still exist. This Ziggurat is the biggest monument of this type still existing. Between 1951 and 1962 the team of Roman Girshman, a French archeologist, excavated large parts of the city. The exceptional site of Chogha Zanbil is one of the four Iranian sites inscribed in the World Heritage List.
