Quote du jour
Hugh's corollary to the Snowball principle of blogging: Good conversations don't care who start them. IQ = BS, cont'd bobvis Yes, my child, there is an IQ It's a good post, and full of tasty fudge: As long as a measure is reasonably stable, reliable, and makes sense, I think we are justified in using it to see what we can find. IQ, despite its imprecision and vagueness is all of these. Doesn't it make sense that if you can figure out little problems on a test that you might be a little smarter than someone who can't? It doesn't prove that you are smarter, of course. Nothing can ever prove that in the same way a thermometer proves something is hot. Why not use the measures that are available and track people's progress through life? We've done this with IQ and found that it is a better predictor of income than gender, parents' education, race, parents' income level, and essentially anything else you might want to think of. Whether IQ exists or not, it certainly is useful from a researcher's perspective. Footnote: In case it isn't already blindingly obvious, useful is not the same as precise. Julie's post mentions that she doubts her kids would do well on a standardized IQ test. From having read her blog for a while, I think her kids are sharp. I think home-schooled children in general will be poorly measured by IQ tests. However, despite this limitation IQ has been effective in predicting what happens within populations.

I.Q. Tests and your Child
(by Carolyn Callahan and Howard Eichner)
Question:
A reader from Tampa, Florida writes "I think my child is very bright. Should I ask the school district to give my child an IQ test?"
Answer:
Before requesting that an IQ test be administered to your child, it is very important to know why you wish to know your child's IQ. You have information that leads you to conclude that your child has an exceptional capacity to learn. Is that capacity recognized by the school? Is your child's current level of achievement taken into account in the teacher's planning and instruction? Is your child challenged by the learning environment in which he or she is currently placed? If the answers to these questions are "yes", then there is little reason for requesting further assessment of your child. The teachers in the school are obviously responding to the characteristics you have recognized and an IQ score will do little to enhance the education of your child. On the other hand, if your child is bored or unchallenged by the classroom activities and his or her teachers do not recognize the level of achievement or the knowledge and skills your child has already mastered, there may be a need to provide documentation of your child's learning capacity. If you have attempted to provide evidence of your child's learning capacity and it has been denied by the educators in your child's life, then a request to have further evidence to use as argument of need for a more challenging curriculum may be warranted. Finally, if there are educational opportunities that are available only to students with a demonstrated level of aptitude (as in test score), and you believe that your child should be afforded these opportunities, then you may wish to request testing.

End The April Agony—Bring Back IQ Tests!
By Steve Sailer It happens every spring. High school seniors across the country anxiously grope in their mailboxes for letters from colleges —exulting if the envelope is a fat one stuffed with acceptance details, despairing if it’s a thin one containing a one-page rejection. In his " Economic Scene " column in the April 14 th New York Times Cornell economist Robert H. Frank, co-author of The Winner-Take-All Society, explains why college applicants’ annual April Agony gets worse each year: "The steep rise in overall earnings inequality over the last three decades has occurred in virtually every industry and occupation… For every starting analyst's position posted by J. Ted Leung on the air: Open Source, Java, Python, and ... Wed, 08 Jun 2005 More parents must grow up - music lessons Abigail is getting old enough to be ready for some music lessons. Actually, some people would say that she's getting started a little bit late more on that in a bit. We're planning to start her on the piano, and a friend of ours who is herself a good pianist recommended a teacher. The teacher prefers the students to be a little older before starting them, and Abigail is close to that preferred age. So on Saturday, I took Abigail over to the teacher's house to sit in on a student recital. The students spanned ages 8-18 and the selections included Chopin Nocturnes, Liszt's La Campanella, and a Prelude and Fugue from The Well Tempered Klavier. Abigail sat very quietly and seemed quite interested in what was going on, particularly when the younger students were playing. I was very impressed with what I heard and also with what I saw. Despite the fact that some of her students have gone on to a very high level, I didn't get the sense that the players felt in a pressure cooker, and a number seemed to be enjoying the pieces that they were playing. It was fun, enjoyable, and the music was good. It also brought back memories of my own musical endeavors: some piano lessons when I was young, a few years of violin lessons, a hiatus until late in high school, and a humanities concentration in music as an undergraduate. As I sat, I found myself in the grip of parental aspirations wanting Abigail to really enjoy music, hoping that she might reach the level of some of the students (I was particularly impressed with the 17 year old who played La Campanella). I realized that I was going to have to curb my own (well meaning) desires for my girls. It is easy for parents to get super invested in having their kids succeed at something, whether that be sports, music, or academics, and there's a fine line between the role of a parent helping a child to learn discipline or to push through a difficult spot, and a parent driving a child for the parent's sake as opposed to the child's.

    Genes, environment and IQ
What determines intelligence : genetic inheritance or environment? According to a new study, the answer differs depending on social class. For very poor children, environment is the key factor; for middle-class and wealthy children, it's mostly a matter of genes. The Washington Post reports: Specifically, the heritability of IQ at the low end of the wealth spectrum was just 0.10 on a scale of zero to one, while it was 0.72 for families of high socioeconomic status. Conversely, the importance of environmental influences on IQ was four times stronger in the poorest families than in the higher status families. "This says that above a certain level, where you have a wide array of opportunities, it doesn't get much better" by adding environmental enhancements, (Sandra) Scarr said. "But below a certain level, additional opportunities can have big impacts." The principle is straightforward and has long been recognized in plants and other simpler organisms. In one famous example, often repeated by evolutionary biologist Richard Lewontin, two genetically identical seeds of corn, planted in very different soil conditions, will grow to very different heights. This study looked at very poor, mostly black families. An English study produced different results, perhaps because the families were not as disadvantaged.

“What do you mean my child isn’t gifted — he got 99 on those tests! That’s nearly a perfect score, isn’t it?” “The criteria you handed out says ‘a score in the 97th percentile or above.’ Peter got an IQ score of 97! That meets the requirement, doesn’t it?” Comments like these are not unusual and indicate a complete misunderstanding of IQ test scores. IQ stands for intelligence quotient. Supposedly, it is a score that tells one how “bright” a person is compared to other people. The average IQ is by definition 100; scores above 100 indicate a higher than average IQ and scores below 100 indicate a lower that average IQ. Theoretically, scores can range any amount below or above 100, but in practice they do not meaningfully go much below 50 or above 150. Half of the population have IQ’s of between 90 and 110, while 25% have higher IQ’s and 25% have lower IQ’s:

    What Does It Measure?
SUSAN DU PLESSIS, B.D., B.A. Hons (psychology)
The most important criterion in diagnosing a child as learning disabled is the IQ test. The aim of an IQ test is to measure the intelligence of a child, which supposedly is an indication of the child's potential. But where does the test come from and does it really measure potential? Intelligence testing began in earnest in France, when in 1904 psychologist Alfred Binet was commissioned by the French government to find a method to differentiate between children who were intellectually normal and those who were inferior. The purpose was to put the latter into special schools where they would receive more individual attention. In this way the disruption they caused in the education of intellectually normal children could be avoided. This led to the development of the Binet Scale
