Darwinistic Elitism is Idiotic
by Al Siebert, Ph.D. , author of The Resiliency Advantage and The Survivor Personality
social Darwinism noun : A theory in sociology that individuals or groups achieve advantage over others as the result of genetic or biological superiority. elitism noun : 1. The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources. 2. a. The sense of entitlement enjoyed by such a group or class. b. Control, rule, or domination by such a group or class. idiotic adjective Showing foolishness or stupidity.
The American Heritage Dictionary In their controversial book The Bell Curve , Richard Herrnstein and Charles Murray advocate a new form of Darwinistic elitism. They assert that a "cognitive elite" will and should "run a custodial state" for an "underclass" of people with lower intelligence that is "disproportionately black." They advocate that because "people in the underclass are in that condition through no fault of their own but because of inherent shortcomings about which little can be done...." and "a significant part of the population must be made permanent wards of the state."

Television In The Bedroom May Hurt Child's School Performance
A study of elementary school students found that children who had television sets in their bedrooms scored significantly lower on school achievement tests than children without TVs in their bedrooms. Having a computer in the home was associated with higher test scores, according to the same study, which was conducted by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Stanford University. The study is published in the July 4, 2005, edition of the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine. IQ Tests and Intelligence
Identify your own unique talents and build on them
Latest research proves conclusively:
  • Intelligence is NOT fixed. We can go on developing it throughout life. There are many different types of intelligence, and we can each build on our own unique strengths and greatly develop other abilities where we may not naturally be so competent.
Researchers Gordon Dryden and Dr. Jeannette Vos, in their best-selling book The Learning Revolution, describe so-called intelligence tests as "possibly the worst educational innovation of the 20 th century."
Two French psychologists, Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon, developed the first modern IQ tests in 1905. Two American psychologists, Lewis M. Terman and Maud A. Merrill, both of Stanford University, later adapted the French work into what became known as the Stanford-Binet tests.
These did a good job of testing certain abilities. But they did not test all abilities. And, worse, they gave rise to the concept that intelligence is fixed at birth. But intelligence is not fixed.

Home Schooling on the Internet
And other new emerging distance-learning methods
"In 30 years, the universities of America, as we have traditionally known them, will be barren wastelands."
That prediction, by noted management thinker Peter Drucker, is one of many startling predictions covered by Gordon Dryden and Dr. Jeannette Vos in their top-selling book, The Learning Revolution.
But authors Dryden and Vos in a news-update on this website, they suggest Drucker is conservative. "Thirty years?" they question. "How about three?"
And that update shows how Stanford, Columbia, Harvard, Duke and Wharton Universities in the United States, and the London School of Economics in Britain are racing to get some of their top management courses on line.
Some predictions are that by 2004 more than 100 million Americans will be taking part in adult education programs, many of them combining distance learning with shorter on-site courses.

IQ tests urged for university entrants
by Liz Lightfoot The Daily Telegraph Teachers have lost faith in A-levels as a way of identifying the brightest students and want universities to supplement them with American-style intelligence tests. Two-thirds say students should be offered university places only after they have received their examination results instead of the present system of admission based on predicted grades. The fact that teachers - who complain that students are over-examined - support an additional test shows the extent of dissatisfaction with the present system of university admissions, says Sir Peter Lampl, the chairman of the Sutton Trust, which commissioned the survey. The trust is piloting the Sat tests on which entry to American universities is based and says they help to identify talented students from low-achieving schools. The tests seek to judge how well students can solve problems, think laterally and apply their knowledge to different situations.

Out of Town
IQ Testing: Intellectual Evaluation for Level and Profile of Intelligence and Academic Potential
If a family chooses to travel a long distance to Minneapolis for a given assessment and consultation experience, I give the same flat fees and packages as are outlined in the previous section for Local Clients. I administer individual ability assessments and provide a great deal of information and support regarding children's giftedness level and profile and the best options for meeting their academic, social and emotional needs now and in the future. I see children whose parents simply want to know where their child “fits” in the ability spectrum, and whether or not the child is “gifted” is not the real issue. The issue is whether or not the child is in the best learning environment for him or her, one that will nurture academic, social, and emotional growth. When a family travels to Minneapolis for assessment and consultation services, it is necessary to deviate from the usual procedure in order to accommodate the family’s travel schedule. Special scheduling is required. Once the date has been set, I email a confirmation that outlines what we’ve agreed to, the fees involved, and how to prepare your child for the trip, the reason for your trip, and what it will be like to work with me. We will discuss your goals and which assessments you wish the child and family to complete (see Assessments and Other Assessments and Services ) prior to scheduling so that all will run smoothly once you are here.

This week's issue of MonTAGe is devoted to the subject of testing, evaluation, and assessments of children specifically, school-age intellectually-gifted children. The focus is upon helping parents to understand the evaluation process and to identify resources which parents may consult when they have questions about specific types of testing or the tests themselves. Many thoughts come to mind when I consider "what do parents need to know about IQ testing." There is so much to tell you. Finding a starting point is difficult. How do you drink an ocean? (Answer: one sip at a time.) Well, if you don't have a teacup and can't find the cupboard you're stuck using your hands, relying upon your own limited resources. At TAGFAM we try very hard to help parents find the answers to their questions. This issue of MonTAGe places "FIND" in capital letters. The focus is on helping YOU to FIND the information that answers your questions about your intellectually gifted child's needs.

Asynchrony: Homeschooling an Exceptionally Gifted Child
    by Hilary Cohen
We just returned from the conference of the Hollingworth Center for Highly Gifted Children. Why did we travel all the way from California to New England for a two-day conference? So my daughter could spend time with other kids like her; so her mom could network with others facing the challenge of meeting the special needs of an exceptionally gifted child. And seeing these kids together made it worth the trip! They had the novel experience of being with age peers who were also intellectual peers. Not all are homeschooled. There was David, who read A Short History of Time at seven; at 10, he is in his second year of high school, taking senior honors classes. And Aaron, a nine-year-old splitting his time between a highly gifted magnet high school and the local junior college. There were Danielle and Jason, whose families have worn themselves out trying to get their schools, despite the absence of a gifted mandate, to accommodate the needs of their children. And there were many of us who have made the leap. Let me tell you about one such family. Lianne suffers from severe asynchronous development. She has the reading skills of a graduate student, writes better than most college freshmen, and comprehends mathematical reasoning like the average 8th grader (although her computation skills are only at 5th grade level). She'll be nine next month. Lianne taught herself to read at two and a half; at three, she read stories, with feeling and multiple voices, to her preschool class. At about the same time she learned all the instruments of the symphony orchestra by name, sight and sound, and planned to become a conductor. By four, she was producing full-length Broadway shows with her Barbie dolls. The next year, she asked for Ken dolls - she was mounting a production of 1776 and really couldn't, she reported, cast Barbie as Ben Franklin!

DoubleTake : Where All the Children Are Above Average John's Take - That would be Fairfax County, Virginia, home of one of the largest school districts in the country. (Several years ago it was the tenth largest; not sure what it is now.) A recent article in the Washington Post noted with awe that "Minorities Swell Pool of Gifted in Fairfax: Success on Diversity Strains Elite Program." Curious about what success "on" diversity might mean, and especially because Jessie attended the Fairfax Gifted and Talented program (giving her mother and me, not just Jessie, quite a bit of experience with it), I read this article with a great deal of interest. I suggest that you read it as well, because I might be overreacting. Keep that caveat in mind as I tell you why I found it troubling, and in some instances virtually incoherent. The article reports that, as a result of revisions in the tests and other admission requirements, enrollment in the selective program went up 37% (519 students) for next fall. Nevertheless, "educators are adamant that the program is as selective as ever." I spent my first year of graduate school at Yale immediately before it went coed, and I am reminded now of comment on the Yale campus then. It was said (and a measure of Yale in those days is that one could never be sure if this was in jest) that Yale would LOVE to go coed, but the administration had been stumped by a seemingly intractable problem: they were determined to come up with a plan for going coed that would a) not increase the size of the student body or b) reduce the number of men who would have been admitted in the absence of co-education.

            Intelligence Tests
Although a strict definition of intelligence has proven elusive, a number of psychologists have argued that it can be quantified, primarily through testing. In 1905, Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon devised a system for testing intelligence, with scoring based on standardized, average mental levels for various age groups. In 1916 the Binet-Simon Intelligence Scale was expanded and reworked by Lewis Terman at Stanford Univ., and later revisions called the Revised Stanford-Binet Intelligence Tests were published in 1937, 1960, and 1985. A highly successful series of tests, designed by psychologist David Wechsler, have been in wide use for years as diagnostic and evaluative instruments. Known in 1939 as the Wechsler-Bellevue Intelligence Scale, the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale is a standard tool for intelligence testing today. All of these tests are administered to one individual at a time by a psychometrician. While no consensus of opinion prevails about what such tests actually measure, their use in education has had great practical value in assigning children to suitable class groups and in predicting academic performance.

We expect so much from "intelligence," despite the fact that our very definitions of it are inconsistent, and even though the tools we have to "measure" it are questionable at best. [M]ost people are born smart and ... we use the likes of IQ tests to pound populations of uniquely gifted individuals into bell curves. IQ is a head trip. There's something misleading, even delusional, about it. No doubt those who score well are smart. But average or low IQ scores are often meaningless, except to the degree that they fortify our belief that intelligence is a fixed value, like height or weight, and as easy to measure. The whole culture we've built around IQ tests serves to legitimize a creepy form of elitism. Worse, it substantiates our need to treat individuals always as members of populations. As typicalities. Nowhere is this more apparent, and obsolete, than in corporate org charts. Yes, hierachies are useful. But so are human beings that like working, and advancing, in companies that value their unique gifts.
    And, of course, fitting people
