Learn the basics of IQ score interpretation in this article. Intelligence testing began in earnest in France, when in 1904 psychologist Alfred Binet was commissioned by the French government to find a method to differentiate between children who were intellectually normal and those who were inferior. The purpose was to put the latter into special schools. There they would receive more individual attention and the disruption they caused in the education of intellectually normal children could be avoided. This led to the development of the Binet Scale , also known as the Simon-Binet Scale in recognition of Theophile Simon's assistance in its development. The test had children do tasks such as follow commands, copy patterns, name objects, and put things in order or arrange them properly. Binet gave the test to Paris schoolchildren and created a standard based on his data. Following Binet’s work, the phrase “intelligence quotient,” or “IQ,” entered the vocabulary. Lewis M. Terman worked on revising the

14. The Fallibility Of IQ Tests
How high does your test measure? Does the maximum attainable iq top out at 145? His mother, a primary school teacher, pulled him out of school and home
http://www.ontariogifted.org/meghan/falsiq.htm
The Fallibility of IQ Tests The Fallibility of Tests Every year in nearly every school district a few children are tested for inclusion in whatever gifted programming the district offers. This is a tense time for many parents and their children. How smart is my child? Is she really gifted? What does that number mean? These are the most common questions. But these aren't really the right questions, because they all start with the assumption that IQ tests measure something as constant as blue eyes or brown hair, and as measurable as height or volume or the annual rainfall in the Sahara. In actuality no one has ever defined exactly what 'IQ' is and no one really knows how to measure what goes on inside the human mind. The 'right' questions should most likely sound something like this . . . Which test did you use? Did the test cover verbal skills? Performance skills? Both equally? Or did it simply measure the mastery of certain academic skills like reading and mathematics? How high does your test measure? Does the maximum attainable IQ top out at 145? 160? 200+? How old is the child? Is the test geared for use with this age, or is the child being tested 'out of level'? How was the test administered? One on one or in a group setting? How was the child feeling? Was he healthy? Was she motivated? Did he get to go to the bathroom beforehand? Was the room pleasant and free of distractions? Does the child have any physical or neurological disabilities that might make it hard to recognize his true ability? Most important, do the test results seem to line up with that the child's teachers and parents have observed at school and at home? Or are there discrepancies? If a parent can find the answers to all these questions, then she might begin to understand what the test really means, at least where her particular child is concerned.

Printed in PHS #4, 1993. Portions of this article and its sidebars are taken from the works of Charlotte Mason, British education reformer and founder of the Parents' National Education Union, and H. Clay Trumbull, a founder of the American Sunday School movement. Both authors lived and wrote in the nineteenth century. A pair of sisters stand side by side at the bathroom sink peacefully brushing their teeth. Their four-year-old brother bounds into the room,. Using much force he lifts the heavy stepping stool and squeezes it between them. Standing on his soapbox, now eye-level with his sisters, he states, "I want to brush my teeth." One annoyed sister, mouth full of foaming toothpaste, replies, "Can't you wait your turn?" Her brother eloquently argues, "Haven't you ever heard the story of the little boy who couldn't get any water to brush his teeth so da-seeds grew in his mouth?" "No, what seeds?" chuckles the sister, rinsing her mouth.

Return to the NeoEugenics' Home Page The Rising Curve: Long-Term Gains in IQ and Related Measures , published by the American Psychological Association, 1998 with 23 contributors. The Rising Curve covers three main topics in intelligence: Is there a world-wide trend in intelligence that is rising, is the gap between Blacks and Whites narrowing, and is there a dysgenic trend in genotypical intelligence? The Flynn Effect: Rising IQs around the world do matter for the development of intelligence have not yet been identified." Well, it doesn't mean that people are getting any smarter but rather that the environment is impacting how the results of IQ test scores are interpreted. That is, the expression of intelligence is not the same as intelligence. If children today have a high level of exposure to visual-spatial stimulus such as computer games, and IQ tests used 50 years ago used the same visual challenges to interpret intelligence, then the tests may no longer be valid from one generation to the next for comparisons. Intelligence hasn't changed, the means to test intelligence has not kept up with human contextual flexibility to deal with a changing environment. Flynn states this fact succinctly, "Moreover, data whose quality cannot be challenged have posed the same question. The Dutch military data, like those of Israel, Norway, and Belgium, are near exhaustive; but even better, Vroon compared a sample of the total population of Dutch examinees with the scores of their own fathers. There is simply no doubt that Dutch men in 1952 had a mean IQ of 79 when scored against 1982 norms. Has the average person in The Netherlands ever been near mental retardation? Does it make sense to assume that at one time almost 40% of Dutch men lacked the capacity to understand soccer, their most favored national sport?"

Gifted Children: the Myth
... Home Older children who may be gifted If your child is already in primary or secondary school when you start to think he or she is gifted, or teachers or friends suggest she or he may be gifted, it is important to have an IQ test carried out by a Psychologist experienced in testing gifted children if you want to be certain that your child's needs are being met, and that she or he is being catered for in a way that will allow him or her to reach his or her potential. Check the information about IQ tests that are suitable for gifted children on the page " Testing Gifted Children " - the section "Using the correct test" about halfway down the page. If you think, or if it's suggested to you, that your child may be gifted, and your child is in the normal school class for his or her age, it's likely that there are problems. These may be obvious, and causing major difficulties at home, at school, or both; there may be no doubt that an IQ test should be carried out. However, depending on the personality of the child, problems at school may be subtle, and may seem to you not greatly different from the problems many children have at school. In reality I believe that unhappiness and problems experienced by any child at school should always be investigated and understood if possible. It should be possible for almost all children to have a reasonably happy and helpful experience at school, and if this is not happening I believe strongly that the causes of any problems need to be discovered, and whatever measures that may be necessary taken to deal with them. Definitely if your child has problems at school and the suggestion is made that he or she is gifted, it is very important that either a multidisciplinary assessment be carried out, or at least an IQ assessment. No good can come of leaving a gifted child to struggle unrecognised with whatever problems he or she experiences at school.

My friend is taking LAST. It's just an IQ test. You can't study for it.
(Edit/typo: This exam is "LAST". LSAT is was law school.) SPOON! 09-06-2003, 01:05 AM Maybe if they had an ebonics version, the negroes would do better. Maybe if they have an oral section, it can be done in Rap.
This is more evidence of why people should home school. Negroes who can't even pass basic tests are the ones teaching kids! And of course, it's racist too! Integration continues to destroy America! :[]!! 09-06-2003, 02:28 AM Great, not only are these teachers idiots, but they're forcing negro literature and culture upon our children, abandoning European and American history and culture. I don't remember ever getting to study about the Vikings, the Celts, or any European groups, for that matter. No, I had to learn about Africa and its "culture," what a super idea!
