Things to consider before you enroll in a private vocational school:
Is the school promising you a job when you graduate?
It is against the law for private vocational schools to use any business name, logo or insignia that is designed to be deceptive and mislead potential students about affiliations the school might have. Did you answer an employment agency ad for a job and found you were really calling a school?
Is a course necessary to get a job?
Check the newspaper to see who is offering the jobs you want. Call the human resources departments of some of the companies and ask if you really need a course. How are you going to pay for the course?
Depending on which type of loan you get, you may have to start repaying the loan as soon as you finish school.
It can take many years to pay back the loan, depending on the cost of the course and how high the interest rate is.
Unlike many other types of loans or debts, school loans are very difficult to discharge in bankruptcy.

VOCATIONAL-TECHNICAL SCHOOLS Unlike four-year college programs, vocational-technical schools offer students a shorter, but more intensive, program directed toward training for a specific occupation. As an example, if you were to take auto body repair or commercial art at Hawkeye Community College, most of your course-work, from the beginning to the end of the program, deals primarily with the skills needed to become employed after completion of your course work. There are two kinds of vocational-technical schools from which to choose:
  • Iowa Area Community Colleges Hawkeye Community College is one of the 16 area community colleges in Iowa. It offers an arts and sciences program as well as vocational and technical programs. The arts and sciences are typically programs that will serve as the first two years of a four-year college program. When reading literature about the area community colleges, you should take special care to locate the specific type of training program that interests you most. Occasionally you will find some programs listed as "optional", which means that you may choose to go directly into the field for which you've trained, or you may transfer your credits to a four-year college and complete a Bachelor of Arts degree. Private Specialized Schools Private specialized schools are privately operated vocational-technical schools that usually specialize in one area of career training such as barbering, business, auto mechanics, or cosmetology. Like the area community colleges, they offer short-term, intensive programs. They sometimes are more expensive than those schools that are state supported.

For Quality Spray Painting, Remember the Fundamentals
Good spray painting—not unlike a good golf game—is accomplished by means of proper procedures and motions. Though most finishers are taught the fundamentals of quality spray painting early in their career, many adopt bad habits over the course of time. By occasionally revisiting the fundamentals, finishers can not only produce a higher quality finish but also reduce waste—saving time and money. High-Tech “Weaponry” for Painters
There are many things a finisher can do to reduce its coating costs and improve part quality. But, did you ever think that laser-guided spray guns would be one of them? Choosing Better Ways to Spray
What spray painters are doing to lessen VOCs and improve transfer efficiency... ...Visit Iowa Waste Reduction Center's (STAR Training) PF Online Showroom , or call 800-422-3109. ...Visit Laser Touch®'s (laser guided spray gun) PF Online Showroom, or call 800-706-0053.
STAR instructor Bill Zimmerle (left) discusses gun patterns with a student.
For Rick Klein, the key to maximizing transfer efficiency in manual liquid spray paint operations isn’t necessarily about the latest and greatest spray gun or the newest nozzle designs to come along. While he doesn’t dispute that technology can play an important role, he believes the single most important factor is not the gun. “It’s all about the technique,” he says.

Then, make another ball the same size as the newly covered racquetball using clay of the same color and texture. Fill a tank with water. Ask students to predict what will happen when you drop both balls into the water. After dropping the balls into the water, ask students to develop possible explanations for what happened. This is a great intro for density, just be sure to never reveal the reason for the density discrepancy, keep them guessing! STUDENT BIOGRAPHY: TODD CAMPBELL Todd Campbell will graduate in August from the University of Iowa with a Ph.D. in Science Education. Todd started out at the University of Iowa as an undergraduate in the field of Chemistry. After earning his bachelor's degree, he went on to earn an M.A.T. in our science education department with an emphasis in chemistry. After teaching high school, Todd returned for his Ph.D. with an emphasis in Environmental Studies.

Sustainable Energy Planning Pilot Project Underway:
The Sustainable Energy Planning Program will conduct a pilot project to lead two Arizona communities through the process of developing a community energy management plan. Using the Sustainable Energy Planning Guide for Local Governments, developed through the Urban Consortium, and partnering with Western Area Power Administration, the pilot project seeks to prove that energy efficiency should be included in a community's plan for physical and economic development. The lessons learned in the pilot will make it easier for other communities to develop a plan of their own. The City of Sierra Vista (population 33,000) and the City of Somerton (population 5,300) have been targeted for the pilot. Contact: Jeff Shively, (602) 280-1410
