History Education in the United States: A Survey of Teacher Certification and State-Based Standards and Assessments for Teachers and Students
By Sarah Drake Brown and John Patrick
What is the condition of K-12 history education today? Answering this question requires an understanding of how the various states prepare and evaluate their teachers and students. This site offers a snapshot of state policies taken in Fall of 2002, focused on five key areas: teacher certification; content standards for teachers; content standards for students; high school graduation and exit exam requirements; and assessments. The Organization of American Historians and the American Historical Association present this survey to those who seek to measure and improve how history is taught in America's elementary, middle, and high schools.

  • Teaching K-12 Teachers have some of the best opportunities of any profession for working abroad. To better understand these, it is useful to distinguish among three main types of teaching, each of which represents a different labor market in which different credentials are needed. TEACHING ENGLISH ABROAD English is the new "lingua franca" worldwide for commerce, diplomacy, technology and higher education. As a result, there are widespread opportunities for native speakers of English to teach English abroad. Teaching English as a Foreign (or Second) Language is known by many acronyms, including TEFL, TESL, EFL, ESL, or even TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). Since teaching is usually done in English, exposure to the local language and culture will be on one's own time.

Awareness
In the early 1990s, awareness of paraeducator issues in Iowa was limited. Some individuals expressed concerns about the changing role of paraeducators. There were pockets of uncoordinated activity. Several area education agencies, local school districts, and community colleges provided training. As the numbers of paraeducators grew and their assignments changed from working primarily in special education settings to working increasingly in general education classes, more administrators and parents became aware of the critical importance of paraeducators.
Deborah Hansen, a consultant for the Iowa Department of Education, provided special leadership and advocacy within the department and throughout the state for paraeducator training and recognition. She provided technical assistance to local and area education agencies and community colleges, held forums for discussions, created pilot projects, and supported sharing of materials and training techniques in statewide and regional conferences. She also spoke to policymakers.
Needs Assessment
In 1995, the Iowa Department of Education conducted focus group meetings surveying paraeducators, general and special education teachers, administrators, support and related services personnel, and parents. The groups represented individuals from rural and urban areas in a variety of educational settings across Iowa. According to the

Welcome to the Iowa PTA Website! Since 1900, Iowa PTA has worked to promote the health, education and welfare of children and youth in homes, schools and communities, and to develop partnerships between parents, educators and the general public. Iowa PTA serves PTA leaders and members throughout Iowa, presenting workshops and offering printed and video resources, quarterly bulletins, monthly electronic newsletters, and maintaining this website to assist PTAs in the important work they do on behalf of children. State PTA board members attend PTA meetings throughout the state to do presentations and provide training or support for PTA units and councils in their own hometown. Iowa PTA officers and board members are volunteers , as are all PTA board members at the local, council, state and national level. We represent nearly 18,000 Iowa PTA members on numerous state-level committees and coalitions, and are proud to be affiliated with National PTA, the largest volunteer organization in the country working solely on behalf of children and youth. As advocates for children, PTA members speak before governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children and youth. Iowa PTA conducts a variety of legislative activities throughout the year. The purpose of these activities is to gather information, to relay legislative information to PTA members and other advocates, and to provide opportunities for PTA members and advocates to contact legislators on a regular basis.

Report from the Committee on School Bands Teacher Shortages…An Old Issue, A New Face Music Mentors of Iowa
Report from the Committee on School Bands March 2001 William A. Gora, Chair Our report for the 2001 meeting is a bit “light” in comparison to many of the previous year’s efforts. Could it be that those issues that were changing secondary education in the United States (the use of time, scheduling designs, public perceptions, political perceptions) at such a rapid rate have simply been implemented or discarded? And we, professional music educators, have once again adapted and remained successful or “taken it on the chin” depending upon how skilled we were at communicating and how well we taught our subject. Our survival depended on the perceptions of the public and of those in charge of making the decisions. The education of young people in America is now, however, based upon state mandated end of course tests, the normal array of nationally standardized tests and the pressure placed on every school administrator for their school to “show” well. The incentives and the consequences are very clear. Unfortunately these have become “solutions dujour ” generated by politicians for political purposes.
