We had a recent bond issue that has allowed us to refurbish and also add new facilities, replacing a dilapidated facility. We're ethnically more diverse, and we have more transient families moving to the area. We are experiencing steady economic and population growth, both in the community and in the school. There are more single and blended families the school is working with than in the past." Solutions: Improved facilities through a bond issue. Received incentive funding from the state because of the district's reorganization. Received a New Iowa Schools Development Corporation grant and an alumni gift that allows teaching foreign languages in the middle school. Provided English as a Second Language (ESL) and latchkey programs. Expanded early childhood program into preschool. Provided Head Start program. Foreign language is moving to middle and then elementary school. Organizing a community early childhood resource center. Benefits: "We are able to address student and family needs more accurately."

    Town of Epworth, Iowa
Epworth History The City of Epworth was established in 1855 when a plot of forty acres for a town was granted by three pioneers. The land was plotted, surveyed, and then named after the birthplace of John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Church in England. These early settlers were of Irish and German descent. Epworth was incorporated on March 1, 1880. The Epworth Seminary opened in 1857 and became nationally recognized. Public facilities were upgraded in the 1980's. Two new parks have been added. The small Tower Park in the center of the city is built around the 300,000 gallon water tower, and a larger park, containing ball diamaonds and playground equipment, is nearing completion on the north side of the city. Epworth is the site for many educational institutions. The Divine Word College, a school for the Society of the Divine Word Missionaries, the Western Dubuque public high school (the Bobcats), as well as a public grade school and a parochial grade school, are all located here.

Resources from HONselect Hormone Therapy a Matter of Doctor Specialty
Family practitioners less likely to prescribe it for menopausal women By Colette Bouchez
HealthScoutNews Reporter TUESDAY, Jan. 7 (HealthScoutNews) Whether doctors continue to recommend hormone replacement therapy may have more to do with what they learned back in medical school than what they read in medical journals today. At least that's the word from a new study in the January issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology Researchers report that physicians who specialize in gynecology are nearly three times more likely to prescribe hormone replacement therapy (HRT) than family practitioners even when they see the same number of menopausal patients. "When we compared the two groups we found that family practice doctors were prescribing HRT less frequently than gynecologists, perhaps because they were less certain of the benefits of HRT," says study author Dr. Barcey Levy, an associate professor of family medicine at the University of Iowa School of Medicine. This time last year the hesitancy of family doctors to prescribe HRT might have been interpreted as a deficit in women's health care. However, in light of the recent findings by the Women's Health Initiative studies that seriously question the benefits of HRT the balance of power has clearly shifted, landing smack in the lap of the family doctor.

School Officials: Your Action is Needed Now!!!
Issue: Iowa School Funding in Trouble
    • State revenues have not kept pace with school needs. State officials predict huge reductions in school funding will be necessary for 2004-05 without new sources of state revenue. Legislators and the governor need to hear from people willing to pay taxes to support education, Iowa's real priority.
    Impact on Schools
If the 2004-05 school year was the first year of reductions rather than the fifth, school districts would just be beginning the process of finding efficiencies, sharing and eliminating the "nice to have" programs that are now long gone. Iowa has already seen the evidence of reversals in educational improvement - class sizes are beginning to creep up, there are fewer paraprofessionals helping in the classroom, and educational program opportunities are being curtailed. Some districts are delaying or eliminating technology and textbook purchases, curtailing teaching training, raising fees and fundraising, cutting field trips and eliminating supply budgets. The odds are, one or more of these impacts have already happened in your school district.
