General Information
All About WMS
Washington Middle School was built in 1935. There have been several structural changes to the building since this construction. In 1986, the courtyard of the school was developed through the efforts of the Armstrong-Curtis Memorial program. The music room was added to the school in 1988, providing spacious rehearsal room for the instrumental and vocal students at WMS.
Washington Middle School facilities include a large classic auditorium, two gymnasiums, and elevator to address the needs of students and community members. The building is currently being wired for future technological advances in the classrooms. The students at Washington benefit from computer labs, vocational education labs, and facilities for art instruction and life skill education.
The teachers at Washington Middle School are the strength of the school. The teachers at Washington maintain high expectations for students and expect students to accept responsibility for their own education and decisions. Washington is a wonderful middle school and community members are invited to visit the school at any time to see what students are learning. We hope to develop and sustain a positive partnership with the parents of our students and the other members of the community. We are developing the citizens of tomorrow. We need the support of parents and community to make this happen.

The General Fund is covered in the Iowa Code, Chap. 257, which outlines the State Foundation Formula for funding schools in Iowa.
Some history regarding the State Foundation Formula: In 1971, the first State Foundation Program was created by the Iowa Legislature to fund Iowa schools based on the following goals:
  • provide a good education for all children of Iowa,
  • equalize educational opportunity for all students,
  • provide property tax relief,
  • decrease the percentage of school costs paid from property taxes, and to
  • provide reasonable control of school costs. (Iowa Code, Chap 442.13 (10)). It would be appropriate to note at this point in time that the State Foundation Formula has been changed in every legislative session in some way or another since 1971. That is the reason why it is important to keep up on what changes are made each year by the Legislature.
Some general points about the State Foundation Formula:
  • It applies only to the school district's General Fund budget.

An Iowa court has ordered the California Alternative High School of Ventura to stop recruiting students or conducting classes in Iowa. Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller said the privately-owned school may have deceived consumers by claiming that its program would produce the equivalent of a high school program. CAHS

The school's program reportedly cost about $600 for ten weeks of classes, three hours per week. The Iowa Consumer Protection Division told the court it appeared that the company tended to target lower-income Latino and immigrant populations with representations of college admission upon completion. The filing said it appeared that the company's representations "were deceptive, due to the fact that it appeared that few if any colleges or universities would admit students based upon graduation" from California Alternative High School's unaccredited educational program. The Nebraska Attorney General sued the school earlier and Indiana is investigating it.

"Truth crushed to earth shall rise again."— Bryan t. In a previous paper we both asked and answered "Who taught the First School in Iowa?" Berryman Jennings, October to December, 1830, at Nashville, Lee County.
We shall in this article discuss the query, "Who is the Founder of the Iowa School System?" or, as another writer puts it, "Who is the Father of Free Schools in Iowa?" Rather we shall not essay to answer who, but prove that the Hon. Horace Mann, whom both writers claim is, is not. In that paper we transcribed one of the articles which has run the gauntlet of all our leading papers of the state, for the purpose of putting in a denial of all the essential points stated, as we wished to reach the public ear at an early date. Now we will present our proof.

    Teacher Education at UNI:
Since its establishment in 1876 as the Iowa State Normal School, the University of Northern Iowa has maintained its affirmed commitment to the support of excellence in teacher education. This commitment was recognized by the Iowa General Assembly in 1967 when the function of the university was redefined to include as its primary responsibility the preparation of " . . . teachers and other educational personnel for schools, colleges, and universities . . ." It is also acknowledged by the university in organizing and defining teacher education as an all-university function. Teacher Education at UNI begins campus-wide with students gaining a Liberal Arts Core of knowledge that integrates with future work in students’ majors and with their professional education sequence of course work. Secondary and K-12 teaching majors receive their specialty area content proficiencies in their respective colleges, while elementary majors work mostly in the College of Education. Pre-student teaching field experiences for all majors occur in area schools and in the Malcolm Price Laboratory School.
