Hearst Foundation gift to bring visiting professionals to UI journalism school Posted January 22, 2002
IOWA CITY Thanks to a $200,000 gift from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation of New York City to the University of Iowa Foundation, UI students and faculty in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication will be visited each year by distinguished professionals from a variety of journalistic fields. The Hearst Visiting Professional Program will bring journalists working in newspapers, magazines, broadcast, new media and other areas of journalism to the school for a period of one to five days to lecture, conduct workshops and provide other educational opportunities. The first visiting professionals sponsored by the endowed program are scheduled to come to the UI campus in the 2002-2003 academic year. Venise Berry, interim director of the journalism school in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, expressed her appreciation to the William Randolph Hearst Foundation for helping advance UI students' education. "This program will give our students the chance to learn from top professionals representing a number of popular communication fields," Berry said. "First-hand instruction from established professionals is priceless and allows us to enhance our curriculum. With this gift, the William Randolph Hearst Foundation is helping to expand our visiting professional program, currently limited to the field of print media, to include other important areas of interest to our students."

Where do people look for and find information? Diana Pounds

Extension Information
Iowa Stae University - Ames When people need to find information, where do they go? In some cases, the answer seems obvious. If they want to know what to do about a sore throat, they ask a doctor. If they want to know where the snarls are in the rush hour traffic, they listen to the radio. If they want to know their horoscopes for the day, they read the newspaper. However, it's not always so obvious where people seek information. Where do homeowners go to find out how to insulate their homes? Where do parents go for advice on living with teenagers? Where do families seek help in setting up budgets? Answers to these kinds of questions could help Extension communicators do a better job of getting Extension information to the people who need it. For example, if Extension communicators discover most people take their child-raising questions to doctors, they might try getting free Extension publications about child raising into doctors' waiting rooms. If they find most parents look to magazines for child-rearing advice, they might try writing more magazine articles. Knowing where people look for information is only half the battle for Extension communicators. Knowing where people

For the first time in Iowa State history, the Iowa State Daily and Ethos magazine have been awarded Gold Crowns from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, marking them as two of the best student publications in the nation, said Daily adviser Mark Witherspoon.
Ethos and Daily staff members accepted the awards in March at the College Media Advisers Spring Convention in New York.
The Gold Crowns are given to the best college and high school newspapers, magazines, yearbooks, and radio and television stations in the nation. In addition, Gold Circle awards were presented to individual staff members.
Ethos Art Director Ashlee Dowd, a senior majoring in graphic design, placed second, third and was given a certificate of merit for best spread design. She also blitzed the award for best typography on a page or a spread, placing first, second and third.
Dowd and Ethos Editor Charlie Weaver, a senior majoring in journalism and mass communication, shared the first-place award for best use of typography throughout the magazine.
