A Brief Look At Iowa's K-12
Physical Education Content Standards
By
Ed Thomas, Ed.D.
Iowa K-12 Health and Physical Education Consultant Original Publication Information:
IAHPERD Journal: Fall, 2003 It may never be known scientifically what a tremendous influence the body and all its organs exert upon the brain, and consequently upon the intellect. The more I see of physical training in schools, the more I believe in it; the more I study psychology, especially physiological psychology, the stronger my belief becomes in physical training. ( p.3) Chapter 12 of The Iowa Administrative Code can and should serve as a foundation for curriculum reform. It has the full force and effect of law, and it includes the K-12 content areas of physical education that Iowa public and accredited private schools must teach. School administrators and physical educators can use these content areas to measure the quality of their current physical education programs, revise curricula, and improve the physical readiness of their students. At the kindergarten level, Chapter 12 requires the following: The kindergarten program shall include experiences designed to develop healthy emotional and social habits and growth in the language arts and communication skills, as well as a capacity for the completion of individual tasks, and protect and increase physical well being with attention given to experiences relating to the development of life skills and human growth and development. A kindergarten teacher shall be licensed/certificated to teach in kindergarten. An accredited nonpublic school must meet the requirements of this subrule only if the nonpublic school offers a kindergarten program.

The Fair Use Test Guidelines for Off-Air Recording and Videotapes Guidelines for Off-the Air Recording of Broadcast Programming for Educational Purposes is a product of a congressional committee and is not a part of the law. Welcome to the Iowa Educators Consortium
The Iowa Educators Consortium, IEC, is an initiative of the Iowa Area Education Agencies. Iowa AEAs formed the IEC as an independent, tax-exempt, nonprofit institution supporting the mission of the Area Education Agencies. The primary function of the IEC is to provide a voluntary purchasing program for K-12 schools by bringing all statewide school purchasing programs under one legal umbrella and one fiscal management group. IEC purchases allow schools to take advantage of aggressive pricing based on the purchasing volume of many Iowa schools.

http://www.k12connections.iptv.org/about.cfm
About IPTV K-12 Connections During the 2004-2005 school year, more than 70,000 students participated in educational experiences offered by Iowa Public Television (IPTV) using the video classrooms of the Iowa Communications Network (ICN). ICN Technology makes it possible for instructors and learners physically separated by location to participate in interactive educational events in an efficient and cost-effective manner that is also a lot of fun.
IPTV K-12 Connections offers complete online registration and support. Teachers are able to learn about session offerings, register for sessions and check the progress of the registration directly from this Web site.
Registrations are processed in the order the events occur and in the order registrations are received. This will help the scheduling staff be as efficient as possible. Requests will not be taken if a session is full or if the registration deadline is past. In most cases the registration deadline is one week prior to the event. Teachers will receive an email message when the registration request has been processed.
IPTV K-12 Connections invites you to take a few moments to explore the pages of this Web site. We hope you find the information helpful. Questions and comments can be forwarded to the K-12 Coordinator, Trista Peitzman (
