about us news sports features ... community Monday, July 5, 2004 Same border, same issues for districts Dramatic growth in the Iowa City metro area poses great challenges for local school districts. They'll need to work through them together. The issue: We suggest: In Coralville, more than 3,500 homes are expected to rise in the Clear Creek Development along Camp Cardinal Road; two-thirds of them will be in the Iowa City School District and the rest in Clear Creek Amana School District. Tiffin, located entirely in the Clear Creek Amana district, might see 114 new homes, apartments and duplexes in Rolling Hills neighborhood and 134 new units in the Reeves neighborhood, north of Highway 6. Meanwhile, North Liberty, a town divided between the two districts, has seen its population double twice in the past 15 years with more growth on the way. Current efforts Though the Clear Creek, Rolling Hills and Reeves developments likely won't fill until decade's end, local school districts have scrambled to address them and other new subdivisions. Clear Creek Amana district recently hired a consultant to review building changes that address the 30 percent hike in enrollment during the past several years. The Iowa City district is building a new elementary and a junior high school in North Liberty; the district also has tapped University of Iowa geography professor Gerard Rushton to prepare a demographics report on boundary line changes.

Basic Introduction:
  • The "Bayesian method" is based on the Bayesian theorem which suggests that the degree to which one believes that a propositioon is true depends on on the a priori belief which one has in the truth of the proposition and in the evidence collected to to investigate the proposition.

Bayes' Theorem:
Posterior Probability =

Posterior probability (The revised values of prior probabilities after receiving additional information)
P (E1) =
Prior probability (The probability which describes the decision maker's judgement about the states of the environment, future events, or hypotheses, before obtaining additional information)
Likelihood or "conditional probability" (the probability of a given sample result, observation or new item of information, under the assumption that some particular hypothesis of state of the environment prevails)
Posterior Probability
Joint Probability (of prior and conditional probabilities)
Marginal Probability (= Sum of all Joint Probabilities)
Joint Probability
Probability assigned to the joint occurence of each survey result F (=new information) and each of the underlying/possible events

Geography is a vital discipline. Its practitioners integrate social, economic and physical information about the Earth to model and understand significant environmental and social problems. The collection, management, analysis and display of data in computerized geographic information systems has also become a valuable tool that many scientists, managers and policy-makers use to develop new knowledge. Geography also serves as a key discipline in interdisciplinary and international teaching and research endeavors.
At the The UI Department of Geography we focused on the environmental consequences of human decisions at local, regional and global scales. Geographic information science as well as the theories and models of the environmental and social sciences are central to our approach. Our aim is to be among the very best programs with special emphasis on: environmental justice spatial analysis and modeling information technology and development geography of health , and land use/land cover change

NEW LEOPOLD CENTER REPORT EXPLORES IOWA'S GEOGRAPHY OF TASTE AMES, Iowa Iowa is known for its corn and soybeans, but less than a hundred years ago the state was a commercial center for the production of sweet corn, popcorn, grapes, apples, onions and even sweet potatoes.
A new report from the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University explores how the integration of Iowa's history, ecology and culture has created unique food products that may hold economic opportunities for farmers and rural communities in today's changing markets.
"Iowa has a rich food heritage and many cultural traditions," said Rich Pirog, who directs the Leopold Center's marketing and food systems initiative and wrote the 45-page report. "It makes sense that some of this history could be used to create niche markets and new food enterprises tied to rural development and agritourism."
Pirog and student intern Zach Paskiet document Iowa's food heritage using maps to show historical concentrations of various crops, counties where historical and recent immigrant groups have settled, topographical features that favor certain kinds of production, and locations of nearly 30 community food festivals. Pirog said he hopes the report fosters more research on place-based foods highly differentiated food products with strong ties to where and how they are grown or processed.

    Geography
Iowa is bordered on two sides by rivers; the Mississippi separates it on the east from Wisconsin and Illinois, and the Missouri and the Big Sioux separate it on the west from Nebraska and South Dakota. The state is bounded on the north by Minnesota and on the south by Missouri. Iowa is an area of rich, rolling plains, interrupted by many rivers. The terrain is low and gently sloping, except for the hills in the unglaciated area of NE Iowa, the steeply sloping bluffs on the banks of the Mississippi, and the moundlike bluffs on the banks of the Missouri. The rivers of the eastern two thirds of Iowa flow to the Mississippi; those of the west flow to the Missouri. The original woodlands, which included black walnut and hickory, were destroyed by lumbering and land clearing in the 19th cent., and present wooded sections are covered only with second or third growths of timber. Only 0.1% of Iowa, the lowest total in the 50 states, is owned by the federal government. Historically typical of Iowa was the prairie. Covered a little more than a century ago with grass higher than the wheels of the pioneers' prairie schooners, or covered wagons, the prairies gave way to fields of corn and other grains. Wildflowers still brighten the roadsides, but few areas of the original grassland remain, and several prairie preserves have been established. The former habitat of wild turkeys, prairie chickens, and quail, Iowa abounds with migratory geese and ducks and the imported ring-necked pheasant and European partridge, all of which are hunted in the autumn.
