Sister State Agreement with Iowa
The Agreement formalizing Iowa and Stavropol as Sister States was signed in 1988, when Governor Branstad and his Official Delegation went to Stavropol to initiate the relationship. In 1989, the then Governor Ivan Taranov of Stavropol and his official delegation came to Iowa and signed the Agreement. It should be noted that Iowa's ties to Russia predate the formal agreement by many years due to exchanges between citizens, political figures, agricultural experts and agribusiness trade. Stavropol Krai became a Sister State to Iowa because of the many similarities the states share: geographic size, economies based on agriculture or ag-related industries and businesses, and nearly equal populations with a few large cities and many small towns. With so many things in common it seemed a natural fit to link the two peoples and time has proven the assumption to be correct. Both states have benefited through exchanges in the fields of agriculture, the arts, business, education, government, law, medicine, sports and economic development.

Sister State Agreement with Iowa
A Sister State relationship was established between the State of Iowa and the Hebei Province of China, during a visit from a Hebei delegation in 1983. Iowa Governor Terry Branstad and Hebei Governor Zhang Shu Guang formalized the partnership during that visit on July 22. Geography
Hebei is a coastal province on the Bohai Bay. It surrounds the major cities of Beijing and Tienjin. It covers an area of 187,000 square kilometers with 487 kilometers of coast line. A circle with a radius of 300 kilometers, centered on Beijing, covers most of Hebei province. The climate in Hebei is much the same as that of Iowa. There is frequently flooding from heavy summer rains. Top Main Cities and Towns
Shijiazhuang, capital of Hebei province, is the sister city of Des Moines. Handan is the sister city of Dubuque. Tangshan is the sister city of Cedar Rapids. Hebei has 11 cities and prefectures and 139 counties under its jurisdiction.

Related Category: U.S. Political Geography Iowa I u w u Pronunciation Key Geography Iowa is bordered on two sides by rivers; the Mississippi separates it on the east from Wisconsin and Illinois, and the Missouri and the Big Sioux separate it on the west from Nebraska and South Dakota. The state is bounded on the north by Minnesota and on the south by Missouri. Iowa is an area of rich, rolling plains, interrupted by many rivers. The terrain is low and gently sloping, except for the hills in the unglaciated area of NE Iowa, the steeply sloping bluffs on the banks of the Mississippi, and the moundlike bluffs on the banks of the Missouri. The rivers of the eastern two thirds of Iowa flow to the Mississippi; those of the west flow to the Missouri. The original woodlands, which included black walnut and hickory, were destroyed by lumbering and land clearing in the 19th cent., and present wooded sections are covered only with second or third growths of timber. Only 0.1% of Iowa, the lowest total in the 50 states, is owned by the federal government. Historically typical of Iowa was the prairie. Covered a little more than a century ago with grass higher than the wheels of the pioneers' prairie schooners, or covered wagons, the prairies gave way to fields of corn and other grains. Wildflowers still brighten the roadsides, but few areas of the original grassland remain, and several prairie preserves have been established. The former habitat of wild turkeys, prairie chickens, and quail, Iowa abounds with migratory geese and ducks and the imported ring-necked pheasant and European partridge, all of which are hunted in the autumn.

Wyoming Lesson Plans Please note that with regard to lesson plans dealing with anthropology, archaeology, indigenous people, ancient civilizations, history, etc, there may be some cross-over and blurring of lines between the topics. For example, a lesson plan dealing with archaeology is automatically dealing with an anthropological subject. A lesson plan dealing with indigenous people is also automatically dealing with anthropology and any of them may, or may not, be dealing with history or ancient civilizations. While every attempt will be made to keep the topic lines as 'clean' as possible, be aware this may not always be possible. Appropriate grade or age levels are included with the lesson plans. The number of lesson plans available online for this topic is enormous. This site can not and does not index all lesson resources. That would be impossible, as sites appear and disappear with astonishing rapidity. The following provides some idea of what is available and will hopefully be a good starting point. These books, based on observations Garreau made while traveling throughout North America as a journalist, analyze the social and political forces Garreau believes are transforming the geography of contemporary American communities. His ideas have found a ready audience in both academic and nonacademic settings. Both books are fixtures in college classes in anthropology, geography, demography, and urban planning. The City of Waterloo, Ontario is the smallest of the tri-cities in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, and is adjacent to the larger city of Kitchener. Its population, as of 2004, is 102,300. Kitchener and Waterloo are often jointly referred to as Kitchener-Waterloo (K-W), or the twin cities, although they have separate municipal governments. There have been several attempts in the past to amalgamate the two cities, but none has been successful. According to popular polls, if the cities were joined most residents of the region would prefer to name the new city "Waterloo". The name Waterloo is stressed on the last syllable (water-LOO).

    History
Waterloo was founded in 1804 by Mennonites from Pennsylvania, including Abraham Erb, considered to be the founder of Waterloo because the two lots of land he owned later made up the core of Waterloo. In 1816, the new town was named Waterloo after the site of the famous battle in Europe the previous year. By the 1840s the area was a popular destination for German settlers. The Germans settled mostly in the area to the south-east of Waterloo, which in 1833 was called Berlin, later renamed to Kitchener in a controversial referendum conducted at the height of anti-German sentiment during the First World War.
