Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 163 items Article Outline Introduction AN EXPANSIVE AND DIVERSE NATION REGIONS of the UNITED STATES CLIMATES AND CLIMATIC REGIONS ... More Information a Natural Features Almost all of the Heartland is in the vast central lowland of North America. The land is mostly level with some gently rolling hills. Horizontal sedimentary strata of limestone, sandstone, shale, and dolomite underlie the entire region. The gentle slopes of the region result mainly from glacial action during the Pleistocene Epoch (1.6 million to 10,000 years ago). The flatlands and productive soils were produced during the last Ice Age at the close of the Pleistocene Epoch, as were the Great Lakes, which were formed by glacial scouring and then filled with the melt water of retreating glaciers. Almost all of the surface water in the Heartland drains into the river systems that feed the Mississippi River, and flooding is a natural hazard in the spring. Both the Great Lakes and the Mississippi have long served as vital transportation links that contribute to the economy of the region.

    Geography
Iowa is bordered on two sides by rivers; the Mississippi separates it on the east from Wisconsin and Illinois, and the Missouri and the Big Sioux separate it on the west from Nebraska and South Dakota. The state is bounded on the north by Minnesota and on the south by Missouri. Iowa is an area of rich, rolling plains, interrupted by many rivers. The terrain is low and gently sloping, except for the hills in the unglaciated area of NE Iowa, the steeply sloping bluffs on the banks of the Mississippi, and the moundlike bluffs on the banks of the Missouri. The rivers of the eastern two thirds of Iowa flow to the Mississippi; those of the west flow to the Missouri. The original woodlands, which included black walnut and hickory, were destroyed by lumbering and land clearing in the 19th cent., and present wooded sections are covered only with second or third growths of timber. Only 0.1% of Iowa, the lowest total in the 50 states, is owned by the federal government. Historically typical of Iowa was the prairie. Covered a little more than a century ago with grass higher than the wheels of the pioneers' prairie schooners, or covered wagons, the prairies gave way to fields of corn and other grains. Wildflowers still brighten the roadsides, but few areas of the original grassland remain, and several prairie preserves have been established. The former habitat of wild turkeys, prairie chickens, and quail, Iowa abounds with migratory geese and ducks and the imported ring-necked pheasant and European partridge, all of which are hunted in the autumn.

In a time of managed care, we need to be creative and use innovative methods to do this work. My undergraduate degree was in marketing, which will help in that respect. I like the diversity of this department. I like the open door policy of the professors. Our drafting room serves as community space, good for shared work. But the reason I decided to come is that few universities anywhere offer the combination of my two disciplines. BEN GOLDSWORTHY
    Originally from Racine, WI
Urban and Regional Planning/Transportation M.S. 2002 One summer I worked as an intern in the Community Development Department of the city of Maryland Heights, Mo. I did a project involving a neighborhood and financial incentives, and I presented it to City Council. I also have assisted at the Public Policy Center with David Forkenbrock, one of my professors here. I became interested in urban and regional planning in my undergraduate years at the University of Wisconsin. I was taking political science and became interested in how cities formed. I took a year off after graduation and looked around. I knew I wanted to be in transportation and in the Midwest, and Iowa seemed to fill the bill.

Bordered on the east by the Mississippi River and on the west by the Missouri River; Iowa is located in the "heartland of America" a region of four distinct seasons with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters. The deep, black topsoil provides a fertile resource for crop production. High temperatures in July average in the upper 80s F (26.6 c) and frequently reach 100 degrees F (37.7 c). Lows in January average between 10 to 20 degrees F (-12.2 to - 6.6 c), dropping at times below zero. Annual rainfall ranges from 26 inches (66 cm) in Northern Iowa to 36 inches (91.4 cm) in the southeast, with about 70 percent falling from April through September. Heavy snow often covers the state from January through March, with a yearly average snowfall of 50 inches (127 cm) in the north and 22 inches (55.8 cm) in the south. Iowa's seasons provide a wide range of temperature variation throughout the year and the climate is especially comfortable from mid-spring to early summer and again from late summer to late autumn.
