This focus of general education skills assessment at iowa Valley stems from ourgeneral National Std. dev. Writing skills – usage skills/mechanics
http://www.iavalley.edu/IR/CAAPAssessmentResults.htm
Iowa Valley Community College District IVCCD Home IR Home History Board of Directors ... Locating Us CAAP Assessment Results Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP) exam to IVCCD students. The CAAP is a nationally standardized assessment tool used to help measure how effective a college has been in improving writing, reading, and mathematics skills of students. This district-wide effort is one part, AQIP Quality Criterion 1 “Helping Students Learn”, of our learning assessment activities along with classroom assessments and program assessments. The district-wide general education assessment design is based on using three ACT-CAAP tests of general education skills. It is through the cooperation of all faculty that this type of assessment can be implemented. The data can be used as a basis for reliable generalizations about all of our students. We thank those of you who have supported the assessment efforts and look forward to expanded participation. This focus of general education skills assessment at Iowa Valley stems from our general education description. General education is intended to provide breadth of learning. General education imparts common knowledge, promotes intellectual inquiry, and stimulates the examination of different perspectives, providing students with knowledge, information, and skills essential for successful life in a complex, changing world. General education relates both to student’s technical or professional preparation and to their personal, social, and lifelong learning needs. Most important, inherent in the idea of general education is the love of learning and the idea of civility and respect for all persons (catalog pg. 4).
