CTE Mission Iowa's educational system has the dual objectives of preparing students for careers and other life roles such as citizen and parent. Education for career and life roles is a prominent part of an effective vehicle for advancing individual skills and related education. It may be provided by public or private institutions or agencies utilizing a variety of community resources and will be offered at the secondary and postsecondary levels. Such programs represent instruction that will be available to all individuals who want, need, and can profit from it. It should be provided to all regardless of race, age, gender, physical, mental, academic or economic condition, and must be easily accessible to all. CTE governance structure Perkins funds are distributed through the Iowa Department of Education. The Iowa Department of Education also is responsible for administration of secondary CTE with the Department of Economic Development responsible for administration of postsecondary CTE. The State Board of Education oversees programmatic control of both secondary and postsecondary CTE.

“I touch the future. I teach.” - Christa McAuliffe st century be the legacy our generation leaves for the children in our schools today and for generations to follow? Or, will we touch the future and adequately fund Iowa schools? Just a week ago, on September 30, USA Today reported, “A study on Iowa’s response to a budget crunch found that lawmakers cut taxes and spent so deeply that the state’s ability to deliver crucial services is threatened.” Referring to the same report, the Des Moines Business Record reported, “Though states overall increased general fund spending by 7 percent from 2001-04, Iowa actually cut general fund spending by almost 8 percent during the period.” Only Michigan and South Carolina reduced spending more. The Business Record goes on to report, “States overall raised taxes 4.3 percent from 2001-2004; Iowa cut taxes 2.2 percent during the period.” According to the National Education Association, the National Association of State Budget Officers and the Iowa Fiscal Partnership, funding for Iowa education is sliding downward. Because of the actions of the Iowa legislature, Iowa education is threatened today. Iowa now ranks well below the national average in per pupil spending. And, we are still losing ground.

Iowa History Project HISTORY OF IOWA GENERAL INTRODUCTION Transcribed by Debbie Clough Gerischer While Iowa is one of the younger states of the Republic, as compared with the Thirteen Colonies which won independence from Great Britain through the War of the Revolution, it has a history which may be traced with some degree of certainty for a period of more than two hundred years. From the time of its discovery in 1673, by Marquette and Joliet, investigation has brought to the knowledge of civilized people many facts relating to the prehistoric period during which it was occupied by the aboriginal races who preserve no history. Through traditions handed down from one generation to another by the Indidan tribes, and recorded observations of the earliest explorers who ventured among them, much of the history of the Red Men who made their homes in Iowa has been gathered. The story of the first explorers of our rivers who gave them names, is incomplete, and even the origin and signification of the beautiful name of our State is involved in obscurity and uncertainty. No connected history of Iowa from the earliest period down to the close of the Nineteenth Century is in existence and the time has arrived when the growing prominence of our State among the members of the Union would seem to justify the presentation of a narrative of the important events of the past. The approaching centennial anniversary of the acquisition of Louisiana, a vast region west of the Mississippi River of which Iowa is one of the greatest stares, renders it especially appropriate that its written history should now be given to the public.

Local Efforts Iowa's education standards require the board of education in each LEA to "adopt a plan for the efficient and effective use of technology in the instructional program." This plan "shall provide for the understanding and use of current technology by staff and students and shall include a procedure to review the district's utilization of technology as a teaching and learning tool." Technical assistance in the development of these plans is generally provided by the educational services and media personnel of Iowa's intermediate education agency, the AEA Area Education Agency. State Efforts At the state level, the following efforts are being made:
  • The State Board of Education's "strategic plan" includes an objective addressing "instructional technology," which declares that "the power of technology will be harnessed in Iowa schools and community colleges to help students learn."
  • The Department of Education has appointed a technology commission to develop "a clear and compelling vision for using technology to transform the education system at the building, district, area and state levels to support the teaching and learning process." This commission will conduct policy and practice analyses and provide a forum for addressing issues in technology.
